4C THE MIAMI" NEWS, Morulav, Julv 20, 1939 CUBA FIRST Behind Your i ME i TV LISTINGS DJi TV Screen Renick Plans News Specials By KRISTLNE Dl'NN Big news on news from WTVJ Thanks to the success of Ralph Renick's pilgrimage to and news about Russia, Channel 4 plans to relinquish precious Class A (mid-evening) time for half-hour special shows to explore behind the local headlines. CD "old Journey 9 Frontier Justice WTHS W'TVJ WCKT CD WPST (EDl'C'N) (CM) (NBC) (ABC) Claudette Colbert and Jeff (Her it a preweu of tonight' outstanding television programs, compiled by TV Key. By TV Key PFTFU fiUNN (9 P.m., Chan it Morrow In Blood in the Dust," about a couple who 4 nel 7) "Vicious Dog." Repeat. If you look at the title, that's precisely what the show is all about. There's some business with gangsters, and the big, offbeat scene takes place in a hobo jungle.

I COLOR I Bnndsfnnd mln.) 4:30 Kdge Of Night County Fair 5 PPye Playhouse Bugs Bunny cartoon, the Three Stooges. Movie (Til 6:30 p.m.) "High Lonesome" (1950) John Barrymore, Chill YVHls. Mysterious young man wanders into a ranch and sets into motion a series of weird happenings. Expert combination of western and mystery, well above average.

5:30 CD Mickey Mouse Club 5:45 Adventure "The Profiteer." Evening guys and bad guys are all cast exact-i ly to type. Fairish on suspense, but excellent on attitude and dialogue. COTTON Start The specials will run about once a month with the first scheduled for next week. Renick, WTVJ's horn-rimmed and somber news director, lists as topics for the programs port problems both on water and in the air, traffic problems, hurricanes and "Metro what it is supposed to be, what it is and do we need it?" (In a single half hour?) The big question-mark over Cuba and Castro gels attention first, and Renick already has two photographers in Cuba. He will dispatch anoiher early this week and will join them himself in time for the July 26 demonstrations.

He expects to have the first special on the air next Monday or Tuesday. Unwashed Viewers face post-Civil War animosity in a frontier town. (Repeat.) Peter Gunn (See TV Key.) The owner of a large fashion establishment falls for a model, but he's already married. Dull drama, big production numbers, all pretty old-hat.

ill mi i CLAUDETTE PLEADS WITH KARTELL On Frontier Justice At 9 P.M. 1 RANDALL Connive! has been in print for two years, but I just discovered it in a pocket edition. It's called "Zoomar," and it is a fast-reading sexy novel. But beyond that, it's a satire of the television industry, specifically of the networks. Kovacs doesn't miss a trick.

Gray-flannel suiters jockeying for promotion, stars forced, begged and blackmailed into telethon appearances, the Godfrey firing squad they're all there. hat makes the book so unusual is that names of persons and places are NOT fictitious enough, and any similarities to real living or dead is absolutely on purpose. Every actor, sponsor, network or critic mentioned is as hard to recognize as Steva Allen' wrapped in cellophane. The book is fascinating whether it's accurate or not. One local TV executive does say, off the record, thai every word is true.

This Week The best that's fresh on TV this week is sports and Harry Golden. Golden is the fat, cigar-smoking lovable editor of the Carolina Israelite and author of "Only In America," a best seller for almost a year that deserves the distinction. He'll be Jack Paar's guest Wednesday at 11:30 p. Channel 7. Otherwise, almost all you if John Fayne, in a dual role, portrays both the hero and the villain in "Dead Ringer." (Repeat.) CD Sherlock Holmes Through series of mysterious clues, Holmes uncovers a blackmail ring.

Cotten stars as the U.S. prosecuting attorney in a case involving a sailor who fares the charge of "unlawful homicide." The true story poses some interesting legal and moral questions, and you'll find yourself comparing your own answer to the dilemma with the actual historical conclusion. GOODYEAR THEATRE (9:30 p.m., Channel 7) "Coogan's Reward." Repeat. One of the best of the series. An amusing script details the adventures of a gold-bricking war correspondent who remains behind the lines sampling brandy and entertainment, and filing firsthand battle reports based on stories he gets from the other reporters' jeep driver.

Tony Randall plavs the conniving scribe as an insufferably delightful rogue, and the whole production is top caliber. DESIIj; PLAYHOUSE (10 p.m., Channel 4) "Silent Thunder." Repeat. Fair-to-middling script, with a good cast and a wonderful horse named Flame who's really the star of the show. Story concerns a cruel young rancher bent on harassing a young Indian, but never manages to break that stalwart down. John Drew Barrymore plays the Indian, and the supporting players include Earl Hol-linian, Bprton M-Lane, Wally Ford ami Patricia Smith.

JACK PAAR SHOW (11 30 p.m., Channel 7) Jack takes the night off and Arlene Francis pinch-hits as hostess, with former Gov. Averell Harriman turning up as a major guest. Her panel of ad-libbers includes writers Garson Kanin and Al Morgan, with author Evan Hunter on for an interview. 11:10 Sports Mosher 11:15 a Sprts Final 11:20 Weather Control 11:25 Trilogy (to 1 a.m.) eV Mark Stevens in "Harbor Story," William Bendix, Ward Bond and Joanne Woodward in "Segment savage lion for zoo, prevent and a Richard Carlson FBI When a new job means a new desk, it's always fun to rummage through old memos, notes and correspondence. The most startling thing, at least to me, in my desk was a smudged, undated release about a survey.

This survey showed that the American public, if forced to choose between the two, would rather have a television set than a refrigerator. Impossible, I thought. Propaganda. Into the wastebasket with it. Finished the desk, started on the filing cabinets and discovered a big red book called, appropriately enough, "Television Factbook." Listen to this: More homes in this country have television sets than have bathtubs! Or telephones.

This is. Indeed, an amazing industry. Just as amazing behind the footlights as in front of them. If Ernie Kovacs can be believed. He wrole a liook which TV Movies Rated By TV Key: Bad Fair Good Outstanding tragedy.
