Well, the guys get only an envelope full of petty cash but Pryor picks up a notebook full of entries concerning union payoffs and "loans." Their possession of that notebook brings about a dramatic turn of events. They could use its power to gain control of the union perhaps or they could resort to blackmail. What happens Is a disruption of their friendship and ultimately the union-ordered death of one of them. A disturbing sidelight to this is the union's fairly easy discovery of the identities of the three, that the union's power is everywhere, that it always has a way of keeping the little guy in his place, that It can play friend against friend, and ultimately, man against bis own worst enemy, himself. That's heavy stuff.

It is, as they say, not a pretty movie. It's a rough one. And, in is horror, it also offers a Pryor, Keitel and Kotte the best roles each has ever been awarded. Kotto's portrayal of the cynical ex-convict Smokey is particularly chilling and Pryor, along with his usual smart-alecky style, delivers here a vulnerability that earns him the title "actor." Keitel, an actor who hasn't been used in major roles until recently, comes out of the Nicholson-Hoffman school. He's a welcome addition to the class.

In its slow-moving way (and that is the only criticism I have of the movie), "Blue Collar" gets to the core of a frustrating lifestyle in that, for the many who experience it, there is no alternative, no way out. Two of the three union men buddies In "Blue Collar" Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel are in particularly frustrating situations. Pryor owes money to the IRS; Keitel, even by moonlighting at a gas station, doesn't have enough money to buy his daughter braces. They, and to a lesser degree their buddy Yaphet Kotto (who does not have a family) are victims of company and union, dead-enders who have nowhere to go but down.
