Carlton WDBO Changes Shift Aycrigg Monday, April 5, WDBO Channel 6 will begin tinkering with the mechanics of its newscasts again, experimenting with new opening, repositioning commercial blors and so forth.

The change viewers are most likely to notice, however, will be the absence of Ben Aycrigg, Channel 6'b veteran anchorman, on the 11 p.m. editions of Newswatch 6. AYCRIGG WILL continue coanchoring the 6 p.m. editions with Frank Hudson, but Hudson will have the late evening slot to himself. Aycrigg will take over the 1 p.m.

editions, replacing Chris Schmidt, who'll become assignments editor. Brian MacFarlane said Monday he had been planning to reorganize Channel 6's news department "to increase efficiency" ever since he became news director. Too many people were doing double duty in what he felt should be full-time jobs, he said. Five months ago, Channel 6 began implementing format and personnel changes largely Inspired by an audience study conducted by Frank Magid Associates, an Iowa-based news consultant firm oft-criticized for spreading the "happy talk," style-over-substance approach to local newscasting. Until that time, nobody at Channel 6 wore more hats then Ben Aycrigg.

He was news director and, in effect, news producer, as well as solo anchorman. ALONG WITH four other stations, Channel 6 is owned by the Providence, R.I.-based Outlet Company. Oct. 27, 1975, Aycrigg was teamed with a youthful coanchorman, Hudson, who came to Channel 6 from Outlet's Syracuse, N.Y., station. Three months ago, MacFarlane was brought in from Outlet's Providence station to take over as Channel 6's news director.

Recently MacFarlane brought in Miles Resnick from Shreveport, to produce the newscasts. Considering all this plus the fact that the Magid organization is notorious for favoring young "talent," fair-haired boys who are good on-camera performers Menthol 2mg. MACFARLANE insisted, however, that while he admires Magid's research, he isn't keen on its continuing consulting services.

As a matter of faet, he said, during his short tenure at Channel 6 he has rejected many Magid suggestions. As for the speculation about Aycrlgg's being quietly eased out of the picture, MacFarlane said, "Absolutely not I consider him the No. 1 asset of the news department. He's heavyweight in the community. Ht's here as long as he wants to Under the new arrangement, MacFarlane noted, Aycrigg also will be available for daytime assignments.

He wants to use the anchorman as a reporter on "subtle, thought-provoking stories that television usually avoids. Socio-economic things, things that affect people. Bon is a community leader, and he'll be able to go out and talk to people now. Without necessarily editorializing, he can Interpret, put things into perspective." STARTING MONDAY, the late evening Newswatch 6 will be In the hands of a news director, producer and anchorman who've called Central Florida home for less than six months. Asked if that didn't present a problem, MacFarlane said, "How much happens between 6 and 1 1 p.m.? I don't think there's a real decision-making problem there." While the ratings of Channel 6 and WFTV-Channel 9's newscasts suffered because of the June 1973 tower collapse at Bithlo, WESH Channel 2 built up a commanding lead.

And since Channels 6 and 9 only recently returned to full signal strength, the current ratings picture is Just for the record, the recently released Arbitron ratings log for the four-week, February-March ratings "sweep" shows second place Channel 6 and thind place Channel 9 gaining on Channel 2, most notably in the 1 1 p.m. competition.
