Oliver escaped serious trouble irt: the first by striking out Joe Carter, getting Ed Sprague to line out to second and, after walking field for Toronto's only run, induct ing an inning-ending fly ball front Charlie O'Brien.

"That's not the way they teach it," Oliver said.

"But If I can throw 44 pitches in the first inning and only give up one run, I'll take it." With the win, Oliver improved to 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA (22 innings) against the Blue Jays, with all three victories coming against Guzman. "That's just a fluke," Oliver said. "I may have their number. but there are plenty of teams out there with my number." Guzman began the game with a league-leading 2.73 ERA, but was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in five innings. He left with a 3.10 and the Blue Jays lost for the fifth time in six games.

After looking solid through the first five innings, Leftwich who has 34 games of experience in the major leagues suddenly looked rattled. Brad Seitzer and Hamlin smashed back-to-back singles and Leftwich's night was over. Anthony Chavez came on in relief and promptly allowed a full-count two-run double to Dunn, who later stole third.

Hughes followed with a grounder to short, but Davalillo's throw home was late which allowed Dunn to score. Chavez finally got out of the inning with a strike out and a ground out, but what started as a 2-1 Angels lead had turned into a 6-2 Angels deficit. 1 Suddenly handed a four-run lead, Diablos starter Steve Whitakcr walked two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth. But after he walked Carvajal after striking out Guiel, the thunderstorms that looked so impressive off in the distance earlier in the came suddenly opened up over Christensen Stadium. At 8:59 p.m with two on and no outs, the umpires called the players off the field.

After nearly an hour rain delay.1 the umpires called off the game. By Chris Turfier Odessa American MIDLAND Through the first five innings of Saturday night's game between the Midland Angels and El Paso Diablos, it seemed nothing short of a complete breakdown or rain suspension could keep the Angels from claiming victory. Unfortunately for the "Angels, they got both. El Paso scored five times in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead over the Angels, then an enormous, thunderstorm suspended play after neaK ly an hour rain delay in the bottom of the sixth. The game will be completed when the Angels visit El Paso later this month.

In the sixth, after retiring eight batters in a row. Midland starter Phil Leftwich gave up a leadoff single to Greg Martinez, the Diablos No. 9 hitter. Martinez stole second, but it made no difference as Leftwich walked Belliard on four straight pitches. Felix stepped up and lined a shot to center scoring Martinez and Belliard.

In a surprising development, the sides appeared close to an agreement that would have owners and players jointly ask Congress to repeal baseball's antitrust exemption as it applied to labor matters.

Owners were prepared to give players credit for service lime lost during the strike if the union was willing to trade another issue. However, all the issues were open for discussion and the. sides kept proposing various tradeoffs. Away from the bargaining table, pressure was put on both sides to continue talking until they reach an agreement. "The atmosphere clearly is better than it has been," Fehr said.

MWe don't have it done. There's still some distance to go to close." On Wednesday, owners gave Levine the authority to present a "last and final" offer to seek a court order lifting the injunction that keeps in place the rules of the labor agreement that expired in December 1993. Levine hasn't presented "final" offer and says he doesn't' know when or if he will. But it appears the threat of a return to! court, and a resumption of a bitter; confrontation that turned much of' the public against baseball during the 232-day strike, sparked both sides to start compromising. "We have sensed a greater desire on their part to move things and it's been reciprocated," Fehr said.

In a memo sent to players on' Thursday, Fehr told them "do doubt that we are entering a critical; period." "In the last several weeks, the; clubs have begun to threaten to gov to court to lift the injunction which' ended the strike," Fehr wrote in the; memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press. "We have cautioned them that doing so would have to be viewed: as the fust step in renewing thel-public and often ugly confrontation" that we have worked so hard to avoid." Philadelphia 2. While there weren't any agreements on major issues, the sides had closed the gap in areas such as the threshold for a luxury tax, the length of the deal and the minimum salary.

It appeared that the threshold for a luxury tax would be between $50 million and $52 million, with the tax rale at about 35 percent. Five or six teams would have to pay a tax next year, with the New York Yankees, Baltimore and Atlanta most likely to cut their payrolls because of the tax.
