I The Miller-Burge Healy's 1 N.F. Chapman No.l in Loving County was reportedly the last wooden derrick in the United States to retire from daily use. The rig was erected in 1929 and was used until 1966. This photograph was taken by Bill Shoopman of Odessa in 1958. The conception of Odessa's oil show is buried deep with the history of the Permian Basin Association, organized at Colorado; City in 1939 to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the completion bf 1 Morrison in the Westbrook field, the discovery well of the Permian Basin. Originally called the Permian Basin Oil, Land and Business Men's Association, this was the first organization in the Permian Basin devoted entirely to the region's petroleum industry. Its official business was to conduct a program of education in the industry with the slogan, "If you live in the Permian Basin, you are in the oil business whether you beh'eve it or not" Chartered by the state of Texas as the Permian Basin Association in October 1939 with Harry Adams as its president and Herbert B.
