TO THE LETTERS 4 OGDEN UTAH SATURDAY EVENING SEPTEMBER 7 1974 EDITORIALS IDS Church Divests Itself of Hospitals Also on the board are two former Ogden residents Dr John A Dixon dean of the University of Utah College of Medicine and Robert Bischoff executive vice president of the Commercial Security Bank The local governing board of each hospital will remain intact for the time being pending further decisions by the newly-organized stystem-wide board of trustees The McKay-Dee board is headed by Nathan Tanner The sweeping changes in the LDS hospital program are in keeping with a detailed study made by the management consultant firm of Cresap Faget and McCormack It found and church authorities concurred at special meetings late Thursday that operation of the hospitals is to the basic mission of the LDS Church The only health service activity maintained at the church headquarters will be the office of Dr James 0 Mason who will remain as commissioner of health services Dr Mason is responsible for the health of the three million Mormons throughout the world and directs a growing corps of health service missionaries The divestiture of LDS Church interests in the 15 hospitals is a sign of the times It illustrates the trend of many organizations and institutions to confine themselves to central missions and leave extraneous activities to specialists in those fields The decision of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to divest itself of its long-held interests in 15 hospitals is of great significance to residents of Utah Southeastern Idaho and Western Wyoming These hospitals with their 2092 beds represent a major portion of the health care facilities in the three Intermountain states Their net worth is $61 million replacement would cost $107 million "There should be no appreciable change recognizable immediately to patients or employes in the hospital such as the new McKay-Dee Hospital Center in Ogden as the complex business transaction takes place The name will be the same The professional staff will be unchanged And programs to improve facilities will presumably continue as planned The divestiture of the LDS interests as ordered Friday by church general authorities will primarily involve high level governing boards A new non-profit corporation has been formed to take ownership of the 15 hospitals from Health Service Corp until now the LDS hospital operating agency A board of trustees for the new corporation has been established headed by William Jones of Salt Lake City president of the Electro Controls Corp Initial members include Thomas Dee II Ogden banker whose family has contribtued many millions of dollars to the hospital here Mr Dee is a vice president of First Security Bank THE BIBLE 150 Message To David When peace finally came upon the land and Israel was not at war with the neighboring nations David proposed to Nathan that they erect a majestic temple to house the Ark of the Covenant for it was still placed in a tent Nathan heartily agreed and encouraged King David in the plan However that night the Lord spoke to Nathan and told him to inform David that he should not build a temple for the ark for the ark had been housed in a tent since the time that Israel was delivered from Egypt The Lord also promised that family would reign over Israel perpetually Nathan dutifully relayed message to David and David his heart overflowing with worshipful joy went before the Lord and prayed a splendid prayer of Thanksgiving concluding now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant that it may continue forever before thee: for thou Lord God has spoken it and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed HI Samuel 7:29) WASHINGTON MERRY-GO-ROUND McGovern Writes Ford With Congratulations ern Utah The firm will invest about $135 million in the facilities centered around a compartively rich vein of copper ore that will be reached from a shaft or tunnel to be drilled between Bingham and Tooele Concentrates from the plant will be hauled to a smelter at Anaconda Mont obviously adding employment for Ogden area railroad workers The 400 to 500 employes with an annual payroll of more than $6 million expect to produce around 56000 tons of copper a year an important addition to our dwindling domestic supplies of this vital metal Adjacent properties of Kennecott Copper have an annual output about five times greater than anticipated by Anaconda The -Utah mining industry has been shrinking in recent years The new Anaconda facilities may mark a turnabout with emphasis in the future on operations that have minimum detriment to the environment Need an Extra To keep money in your sock first you have to be able to afford an extra pair Political Litter Candidates for public office should recognize that they lose rather than gain support by indiscriminate distribution of literature that results in litter An example is a candidate for Weber County commission whose agents placed printed materials under the windshield wiper blades of every vehicle in an Ogden area hospital lot on Thursday As visitors and employes came out they generally threw the literature on the asphalt or crumpled it in their hands Few read it Many expressed resentment at-having to remove the material from their cars And the crew' that had to clean the parking let will predict never vote for this individual! It is also against the law to nail tack on glue posters on utility poles and public fences Violation of this regulation like littering of parking lets promotes disfavor of individuals responsible New Copper Mine Announcement by the Anaconda Co that it will develop a new mine in the Oquirrh Mountains and construct a new concentrating plant near Tooele should prove an economic boon to all of North EDITOR' and a beautiful landscape as much as anyone else but not at the expense of my property rights as there are much better ways to accomplish this While the money is being used to help push this bill we who oppose this socialistic scheme must do so with our own personal funds which is why you seen a copy of the truth about this bill as yet George Leshko Ogden Note: Section (2A) of the Utah Land Use Act does NOT mention gardens or fireplaces as contended by Mr Leshko Weber County chairman of the American party Here is the exact language of the act: (2 In cooperation with local governments (the State-Land Use Commission is authorized) to publish within nine months after the effective date this act guidelines which have been mutually agreed upon by the commission and the local governments for the use and local governments in the preparation of local land use plans and which shall take Into consideration the following: (a Esthetic ecological environmental geological! hydro-logical and physical values and conditions including soil types water availability and the presence of nonrenewable natural resources that influence the desirability of various types of land use and development) Commission Candidate Editor Standard-Examiner: Primary Election Day is almost here (Sept 10) drd I'm concerned about the possible objectivity of one candidate for our Weber County Cominission John Webber is a land developer by profession and I wonder how many people are aware of just how much influence county commissioners have in land development matters The county commissioners appoint the members of the planning commission of them sits that board One duty ofThe planning commission is tdjpropose planning and zoning ordinances which are then submitted to the county commissioners afid after public hearings are either accepted or rejected by tKe county commissioners The! county commission also approves subdivision plans If a subdivision proposal is rejected a "developer may appeal his case to the Board of Adjustments whose members are also appointed by the county commissioners The county commissioners select the director of the planning commission's staff The county commissioners control the size and scope of the planning activities indirectly by control of that budget This candidate has publicly accused both planning commission and county commissioners of unfair treatment On three occasions he has proposed va- nous combinations of high density and single dwelling development of 600 acres he owns on the road to Snow Basin The planning commission on the basis of the soil condition tests and water percolation tests given them have not been able under State health regulations to approve them His plans were not rejected He was told if he could produce at his own cost soil and percolation tests that proved certain areas of his land met state requirements these areas would be approved for development To date he has not done this Veters should weigh 3M con- sider all they know about a candidate and the office for which he is running Valice MLaramee 1 Weber CoiHyl Dove Hunters Editor Standard-Examiner Shots pierced the crisjyjall air this morning as hunters stalked our fields in believe it or of doves Some men ran with their dogs Some crouched in anticipation of their tiny prey One hunter on our place shot a dove after kicking it high-in the air' to complete the hqjd it up looked it over and threwit into a nearby ditch JZZX Apparently someonefras forgotten our God chose dove as a symbol cf his spirit at the baptism of ourjtenriour Our country allow anyone to kill its national bird and yet all Judeo-Christians have chosen the dove as a emblem of peace based on the commandment not We are not safe inijijr yards during the hunt One hunter had his car window shot and some residents have had shots' in their windows Weber County is happy hunting grounds may think Soon it will be-the pheasant hunt and again caen will take up arms declare a truce in the! county before we halve! to call in Henry Kissinger tcave the-olive branch -Ruth Lindley Ogden Why Special? Editor Standard-Examiner: As a concerned citizen of Ogden I want to know why the city officials have called for a special election on the Ogden City Mall bond issue We all know there will be a primary election Sept 10 and the general election Nov 5 Is there a special reason to call for a special election when two major elections are due this year? I know there is a great additional cost involved with the special election Oct 1 Obviously this great additional cost will be borne by the taxpayers of Ogden Therefore we have the right to know all costs involved with the election and the reasons for the special date Millo Pagano Ogden Amnesty Views Editor Standard-Examiner: As the time closes upon us concerning amnesty conditional or unconditional citizens must make their views known to their Congressmen If we want equal justice remove the laws governing all these who deserted went AWOL or were found guilty of this law in all the brigs and free them As pertains to the Vietnam War some chose to stay away and many died Some chose to run Either we have law's or anarchy What of the mothers fathers and widows? Why should the white feathers mock their grief by coming back? Can we make the long rows of white tombstones give up their lonely occupants and return? What of the unknown soldiers bier? Each side made its choice only the draft dodgers ard deserters are allowed to change their mind Let another war come along and see them run again I think its unfair for ooliticians to eanr 50000 votes this way Last but not least why increase our employment roles or welfare roles another 50000? Loyalty is loyalty just as a rose is a rose by any other name Remember country right or wrong my Richard McDonald Ogden Sccut Leaders Editor Standard-Examiner: Recently I was reading in the paper that there was a great need for Girl Scout leaders This evening I saw on television a similar request only more demanding Though these requests appeal to me I have to first onder what happened to the mothers of all these girls that they have nd leader It always mv impression that this was an affair that was supposed to involve the family During the time my children w'ere of an age where I could help I did so First I was an assistant leader for Blue Birds which is quite similar to Brown-ies of Girl Scouts then for a year I was the leader of the Camp Fire equivalent to Girl Scouts Next I became involved in scouting as an assistant den mother for my oldest group Yet eventually this led to my being a den mother for a total of 5 years I was active in Lincoln Neb Ogden and last but not least in Roy where my youngest son had already left the group The last group was probably the most enjoyable because I did not have to worry after my own child Someone else got the great pleasure of working with the older boys During this time my husband also became active It was not as long as I was active due to outside pressures on his time but for the time he worked with the Scouting Program he certainly received at least as much as he gave! Parents where are you when your children really need you? Mrs George Crawford Roy Dictate Color? Editor Standard-Examiner: In reference to the recent letter concerning the Land Use bill in which Mr Ogden states that some people believe that government will dictate the color of your I would like to inform him that in certain areas of Utah this is already being done Also according to the bill we could be told whether or not we could grow a garden or bum coal and wood in our fireplaces If you have any doubts about this read Section 5 (2a) of the bill I would also like to remind the people of Utah that the petitions were only to get the bill on the November ballot which is as it should be in a free society We already have health and zoning laws concerning the raising of livestock within the city limits junk cars on your property etc Also for several years now I have been forced to keep $200 worth of anti-pollution devices on my truck which cut the power and burn 30 more while Kennecott pours enough smoke into the atmosphere to obscure half the valley I would like to see clean air Although McGovern was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1972 and will oppose election in 1976 he wrote the ne President on Aug 30 to vish him well one who loves America has taken satisfaction from the crisis that put you in the hardest job the letter allows we can draw satisfaction from the underlying strength cf our constitutional structure and the rule of law For we have demonstrated that we take those principles seriously and that they can be made to work STEP" despite the serious challenge we have to face despite the honest differences we By JACK ANDERSON All but forgotten in the Watergate after-math has been its chief victim Sen George McGovern who was badly defeated after the dirtiest presidential campaign in American history Yet the South Dakota senator betraying no bitterness has written a stirring private letter to the man who has now wound up in the "White House in his place without ever running for President The letter intended for President eyes only thanks him for his at this critical hour and declares eloquently: one can now fail to see what is right with America even as we strive to repairwhat is PAUL HARVEY Fat in the Meat Makes it Tender HENRY TAYLOR Pressures Build Against Shepardic Oriental Jews are bound to have we have taken the first and greatest step toward recovery Our confidence is Citing what is right with America McGovern tells Ford warmly: thing that is right is your approach to the presidency Above all else the country needed healing You have understood that need and met it spirit of excessive partisanship is gone from the White House Instead you have summoned a spirit of cooperation from Democrats and Republicans alike Instead of there is a list of domestic and foreign priorities we share together with the sense of common purpose you have inspired we face them with renewed strength and as one united people once again We can hammer out the answers on the basis of mutual respect and with a common vision of America as a great and decent WORDS OF PRAISE McGovern goes on to praise his political adversary have the opportunity and the capacity to be a great wTites the senator bring to the White House the same qualities of fundamental honesty and fairness those of us who served with you saw in Gerry Ford our colleague in the House President Ford you have called upon civility among politicians That alone would be an historic achievement Knowing you as I have I see every chance for equal achievements in meeting the challenge of inflation and other challenges still unforeseen my part you can be assured that I will give all the help I can to a President doing all he can to find the best course for the NOW YOU KNOW The apple was developed in 1870 through a chance seedling on the McIntosh homestead Ontario Canada A healthy cow produces an average of 40-50 pounds of milk each day The first known book devoted entirely to checkers was printed in Spain in 1547 The Japanese cultivate seaweed on submarine rope arbors and process it on a large scale for use as organic fertilizer The only White House bridegroom among all the sons was John Adams son of President Quincy Adams His wedding was celebrated in the executive mansion on Feb 25 1828 The Derby race run at Epsom Downs England on May 22 1867 was held in the midst of a snowstorm The winner was Russia) And clearly Eastern European Jews dominate the political power in Israel But the Sephardic Oriental Jews who have moved from elsewhere in North Africa now actually outnumber the European Jews in Israel This population is growing highly explosive The Oriental Jews are militantly protesting a monopoly over political power by Eastern European and other European Jews now fallen into the minority The Israel Knesset (Parliament) has 120 members There are only 18 Arab Jews in it They hold only about 3 per cent of the top-layer civil service positions Around 90 per cent of important government military and industrial positions are held by Ashkenazim BADLY PREPARED The Arab Jews are badly prepared to live in technological society Many remain poverty stricken And in education the dropout rate is appalling The Sephardin comprise nearly 70 per cent of I sr a 1 primary school enrollment but only 4 per cent of the university graduates They claim that one consequence is the evolution In Israel of a caste-class social order which clamps them in an iron vise as future-starved second-class citizens And they quote the Yiddish word which means to swindle someone At the same time Israel is experiencing a of European Jews to Europe particularly to France and most notably young people with special talents and training In fact there is something of a out of Israel back to Europe We see Israel externally The Israelis see Israel internally And unrevealed to us at our distance the buoyant expectations once held are now deeply bitterly on trial Brothers of the broiler if I may have your attention for a cooking lessen there may yet be enough low-priced meat to go around You know how the fast-service hamburger places hold prices down? learned they can buy cheaper grass-fed beef from Argentina or Australia mix it with some fat trimmings from our own corn-fed animals grind it all up and it is no less nourishing and much less costly Americans have been demanding The way you make meat tender is to make it FEED HIM CORN When you prepare your steer for market you bring him in from the pasture where been eating grass and feed hirn com This piles on fat Technically the process of marbleizing meat is more sophisticated and complicated than just on but that is what it is Also the meat industry is developing ways and means of marketing special breeds of animals at an earlier age seeking meat both lean and tender When the cattleman markets more pounds of meat he paid by the pound makes more until new Now since our Midwest drought and other factors the price of com is so high that finish feeding costs that beef fanner more than worth If he has to market animals fattened on com you are going to have to pay for the meat plus the corn PAYING EXTRA So tender meat is expensive The steaks and such cuts of meat which you prefer to broil will cost more when what you are paying extra for is Americans can change their meat-eating habits they have many times I can recall the days of my youth when we bought a whole tray of liver for a and used it for catfish bait Economizing during the depression we ate such of meat as brains and kidneys and tongue Now those cuts are delicacies Now the liver we used to feed the fish turns out to be so superrich in certain nutrients that it commands a premium price BETTER FED We depression-bred boys were better fed than we realized Now in 1974 we face another period of belt tightening wrong with modifying our expensive tastes and learning to make do with what we have most of? Much of the drought-damaged com can be ground up and fed as silage Again the finished meat will not likely be tender but when you compute cost-per-serving you are getting more nourishment for your money in lean meat And altogether as delicious if willing to demonstrate a little more imagination and artistry in preparation Periods of economic recession are never all bad They reteach a degree of self-reliance in the performance of household repairs and automobile maintenance and such Perhaps this present pinch will prod us to relearn the neglected arts of sewing and gardening and cooking That 300 000 has now dwindled to less than 30000 Of these two-thirds live in the single city of Casablanca When I was last there and also in Rabat Marrakesh and Tangier even the Jewish schools were closing for lack of children Morocco borders on Algeria and President Houari Boumedienne frightened the Jews out of Algeria So did revolutionary Col Muammar el-Qaddafi in Libya So did Maj Gen Gaafar al-Mimeiry when he took over the Sudan And so did Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser The exodus from Egypt has slowed down only under President Anwar el-Sadat In Syria the Jews are few In Lebanon all but about 6000 have left They cannot hold public office or government jobs and are mostly small shopkeepers MOVING OUT Neighboring Iraq had 120000 Jews in postwar 1946 It has only 400 today Less than 10000 Jews now remain in Moslem countries most closely involved with the Israel conflicts In Syria Lebanon Egypt and Libya alone there are now 308000 fewer Jews than 28 years ago The Israelis describe Eastern European Jews who are already there as Ashkenazim They are chiefly the children of parents born within a GOO-mile radius of the Minsk-Pinsk region of Russia (Former Premier Golda Meir herself was bom in Kiev While Israel continues to crackle in' the news probably the greatest untold pressure there is the wavelike exodus of Shepardic Oriental Jews or so-called Arab Jews into that country In Israel they are called Sephardim (a full 90 per cent are from North African countries) and behind the scenes this tide is now shaking brave little back-to-the wall Israel to its foundations The largest exodus is from Morocco Morocco had the biggest Jewish community in the Arab world But the bloody uprising against King Hassan II at his palace profoundly frightened all Moroccan Jews On that afternoon some Rabat and Casablanca Arab Jews found tracts in their mailboxes warning that their time will come and in Tangier places called Jew Beach Jew River etc saw anti-Jewish riots 1 PERSONAL ATTACK 3 myself have beard King Hassan say that he considers an attack against Arab Jews to be a personal attack against himself But the Jews there do not feel secure This caps off an exodus which began in 1956 promptly after Morocco gained independence irom France France ha3 the largest Western European Jewish community: 535000 This strong presence in France gave much French political and other protection to the Arabs in Morocco: an amazing 300000.
