2B THE AMERICAN Thursday, August 10, 1989 hstw. Phillies eliminated: from tourney The Associated Press ing champion Brazoswood exploded for all their runs over the final three innings to crush Odessa East 11-0 in the Babe Ruth 14-15 Southwest Regional title game Wednesday night. Brazoswood returns to the Babe Ruth World Series where it finished as runner-up a year ago. Odessa East Coach Gary McMillan said Brazoswood turned the game around quickly in the fifth inning. "They hit two home runs and our defense kind of fell apart," McMillan said.

Odessa East managed just three three hits but is one of only six Babe Ruth regional runners-up. "I'm pretty proud of the boys," McMillan said. "There were six of these tournaments so that means our kids are among the top 12 in the country." The American MALVERN, Ark. The Odessa East Phillies came up short Wednesday night in their bid to reach the Babe Ruth 16-18 World Series beginning Aug. 19 in Owensboro, Kent.

Denham Springs, defeated Odessa East, 7-1, to claim the Southwest Regional title. Denham Springs jumped on top early and often, scoring two runs in second, two, in third, two more in fifth and one in seventh to keep the Phillies at bay. Odessa East's only run came in the third inning. Catcher Alan Wyles singled and scored when Stoney Case doubled off the top of the fence. Losing pitcher Breech Nolan gave up six hits and seven runs through six innings.

Nolan had four strikeouts and four walks. Joe Reyes pitched the seventh for the Phillies. "We just kind of ran out of gas there at the end," Coach Bobby NCase said. We just, didn't have it the last night. We made things go our way pretty good there for a while but we didn't have it last night." i The Phillies gave up five errors to hurt themselves, Case said.

Denham Springs starting pitcher David Little kept the Phillies bottled up with four hits over three innings. Stoney Case added a single while Saul Bustos singled for the Phillies' only other hit. Chris Pope shut out Odessa East for the final four innings. Erazcsi'ccd 11, Odessa East 0 SPRINGDALE, Ark. Defend I 4 "Si- J.

251 Robin Yount steals second in Brewers' 6-1 win. Cubs fans celebrate three-game sweep of Expos. Judge rejects plea of irreparable harm COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Pete Rose's prediction that he would be irreparably harmed if Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti were to hold a disciplinary hearing against him is not reason enough to block the session, baseball has told a federal judge, "Rose assumes that the result of the hearing before the Commissioner will be adverse to him, and further speculates that this hypothetical result will substantially change the public current perception of him," baseball lawyers said in a memo filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

"Courts routinely have declined to enjoin hearings where the claimed injury is predicated solely upon a predicition of the outcome of the hearing," the memo said. Attorney John C. Elam of Columbus, representing Giamatti, asked the court to reject Rose's request for protection from disciplinary action pending an appeal of U.S. District Judge John D. Holschuh's earlier decision that the case belonged in federal, rather than state, court.

Elam said both baseball and Giamatti are suffering "substantial irreparable injury" that will continue if an Aug. 17 hearing by Giamatti into gambling allegations against Rose is blocked. mm Croh Pdland 6, Wichita 5 Mldltnd i bi American League Angels 4, Mariners 1 The California Angels see a change in Kirk McCaskill and he saw it, too. So for now, they lead the see-saw American League West. McCaskill pitched seven strong innings Wednesday night as the Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1 for a one-game edge over Oakland.

McCaskill, slowed by injuries, won a total of two games after July in the 1987 and 1988 seasons. But he has already won twice this month, both against the Mariners. "I'd gotten so frustrated by the whole process. It's pretty obvious when my arm feels good, and when it doesn't," McCaskill said. "I'm feeling pretty good now." The Angels moved ahead of Oakland, which lost to Chicago 3-2 in 11 innings.

The Athletics begin a three-game series at Anaheim on Friday night. McCaskill, 12-6, gave up six hits at home. Bob McClure pitched two scoreless innings and former Midland Angel Bryan Harvey struck out the side in the ninth for his 16th save. The Mariners have scored just two runs in 23 innings against McCaskill. He is 3-0 versus Seattle this season, but just 4-4 in his career.

White Sox 3, Athletics 2 Carlton Fisk singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 1 1th inning and Chicago beat Oakland for its 14th victory in its last 16 home games. The Athletics lost for the fourth time in seven games. Jose Canseco, who did not start for the second straight day because of a strained quadricep muscle, opened the Oakland ninth with a pinch-hit double. Ron Hassey singled home pinch runner Stan Javier to tie it. With one out in the 1 1th, singles by Scott Fletcher and Ivan Calderon put runners at second and third.

On a 3-0 count, Fisk singled off Jim Corsi, Tom McCarthy, 1-1, got the victory. Twins 7, Orioles 0 Allan Anderson remained unbeaten in six career decisions against Baltimore, leading Minnesota at Memorial Stadium. Anderson, 13-9, beat the Orioles for the third time this season and won his fourth decision overall. He scattered five singles in his first shutout since last Sept. 27.

The Twins finished 8-4 against Baltimore, the best record by any team against the AL East leaders. national League Padres 2, Astros 1 Benito Santiago says his sacrifice fly that gave San Diego its first ninth-inning, come-from-behind win this season helps make up for his mistake that led to a devestating Padres loss in Houston two months ago. "It would have been great to hit a grand slam, but I'll take the fly ball and winning the game," Santiago, said after his pne-out, bases-loaded drive gave San Diego a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over the Astros. The Padres, trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, at least partly avenged two heartbreaking losses at the Astrodome on June 6 and June 8. "It's been a long time coming," Padres manager Jack McKeon said.

"It was great to see the other guys walk in a crucial run like that for a change. On June 6, the Padres led Houston 7-4 lead with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth when Greg Harris and Mark Davis combined to walk four batters. The Astros tied that game when Santiago failed to step on home plate on a pitch in the dirt, a swinging third strike, which allowed Ken Caminiti to score the tying run. Houston won in extra "I'll never forget that play," Santiago said. "Winning this game kind of makes up for it.

Giants 10, Reds 1 Kevin Mitchell, a sleeping Giant since the All-Star game, is showing signs of waking up. Mitchell, with only three homers in a month, broke loose with a pair of two-run homers and drove in his 100th run earlier than any player in this decade as the San Francisco Giants routed the Cincinnati Reds 10-1 Wednesday. Mitchell, who leads the majors with 36 home runs and 100 RBIs, has knocked in six runs in the last two games. Don Robinson, 1 1-7, also homered for the Giants and pitched a five-hitter for his third straight game and fourth of the season. Cuns 3, Expos 0 Chicago completed a three-game sweep and handed Montreal its seventh consecutive loss.

Rick Sutcliffe pitched a one-hitter for seven innings and Ryne Sandberg hit his third homer in three games. The sweep gave the Cubs a three-game lead over the second-place Expos in the NL East. Neither Wichita starter Doug 3rocail nor Midland starter David Gray bill figured in the decision. Cron's homer spoiled a standout performance by Wichita second baseman Paul Faries, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Wichita first baseman Brian Cis-arik also had three hits while teammate Mike Basso cracked a two-run single, in the second inning that helped the Wranglers to a 3-0 lead. Midland catcher Otto Gonzalez cracked a two-run homer, his seventh, in the sixth inning to cut the Wichita led to 4-3. Midland Manager Max Oliveras said the victory "may be a turning point." The Midland players had been hanging their heads and needed a boost, Oliveras said. "It was good to see Cron hit a homer. He just crushed it," and the ball reportedly rolled onto Loop 250 north of the stadium, he said. Along with the usual strong hitting, even the Midland pitching was solid Wednesday, Oliveras said. "It was a good effort from our pitching staff," Oliveras said.

Gruber collided with third-base umpire Don Dcnkingcr while chasing down a pop-up in foul territory in the top of the first. X-rays showed a crack in the bone of Gruber's right hand. However, team doctors think the crack may be from a previous injury and don't consider it serious. "Gruber came to me in the third inning and told me he rouldn't throw," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. "It didn't look like much when it happened.
