TIMES DEMOCRAT Sunday, Oct. HU rn Davrnport-Bettendorf, laua OO 1 Tapped TJ Again with -v" Larry Weindruch NFLUnbeatens Eye No. 4 Mighty Elusive Goal Bowling Congress finds You don't hear too many bowlers talking about rolling a perfect 300 game around bowling centers too often they say that sort of wishful thinking out loud is a jinx. But every honest bowler will admit to the thought, which very rarely is transformed into reality. "All it takes" for a 300 game is 12 strikes In a row just about everyone who has stood on an approach knows that.

Well, there's much more to a 300 game than what meets the eye. Factors such as luck, skill, fate, nerves and other intangibles enter into bowling perfection. Last season, there were more than 1,250 perfect games sanctioned by the American Bowling Congress. The Women's International Huskers Smother Gophers LINCOLN, Neb, (AP) -Dave Humm threw a record-setting touchdown pass and running backs Dave Gillespie and Monte Anthony scored two touchdowns each Saturday as Nebraska's sixth-ranked t'ornhuskers defeated Minnesota 54-0 in a game in which the Golden Gophers could not get their offense in gear. Humm set a Nebraska record when he tossed the 33rd touchdown pass of his career, a 6-yarder to fullback Tony Davis, to open Husker scoring in the first period.

Nebraska set the tone of the game in its first possession as Humm guided an 85-yard scoring drive in 16 plays, capped by his record setting TD pass. Minnesota appeared to have stalled the Husker drive, but with fourth down and two yards to go on the 33, Gillespie picked up six yards (Hi a running play. Minnesota was unable to come up with a first down in the first three quarters, and managed only three in the final stanza as the Gophers could not spring vaunted running back Rick Upchurch past the Nebraska defensive line. Upchurch managed only 19 three straight losses. Thomas replaced Howard Shnel-lenberger following last week's loss to Philadelphia.

St. Louis won its third in a row, beating Cleveland last week, and the Cardinals haven't done that well at the start of a season since 19fj6, when they won their first five. They were 4-9-1 last year. DEFENSE HAS been the key for the Cards. A year ago, they allowed 90 points in their first three games.

This season, their yield has been a mere 20 points, less than one touchdown per game. That's the best figure in the league so far. San Francisco, tied for the lead in its division, won its first two games before being beaten by Cincinnati last week. The best matchup of the NFL weekend could be in Irving, where unbeaten Minnesota faces Dallas. The Vikes haven't been scoring.

They won their last two games with only one touchdown in each contest. Last week's score came on the 250th touchdown pass of Fran Tarkenton's career. DALLAS' offense also has been sluggish. The Cowboys' only score in last week's loss to the New York Giants came with only 11 seconds left to play. Quarterback Roger Staubach passed for 256 yards in that game and leads the league with 725 yards so far.

Two of today's three interconference games Washington at Cincinnati and Buffalo at Green Bay match teams with identical records of 2-1. Washington and Cincinnati both showed strong defenses last week, each permitting only a field goal and winning comfortably. The Redskins' Bill Kilmer is leading the league's passers and against Cincinnati, he will be aiming for Charley Taylor, who is only two catches short of Lance Alworth's 542 career mark, fourth on the NFL's all-time list. Bv AKMM'iatcri l'n Unbeaten and untied. That bit of alliteration is usually reserved for football people like the Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Dallas Cowboys.

But as the National Football League season enters its fourth week today, there are only three clubs who qualify for that fancy phrase, and two of them are the New England Patriots and St. Louis Cardinals, who were have-nots as recently as last season. The Patriots are at home against the winless Baltimore Colts while St. Louis, off to its best start in eight seasons, plays at San Francisco. MINNESOTA, the third unbeaten club and the only one of the three really expected to be, is in Dallas for a rematch of last year's National Conference championship game.

Elsewhere Sunday, Washington is at Cincinnati, Buffalo at Green Bay, Denver at Kansas City, Oakland at Cleveland, Detroit at Los Angeles, Pittsburgh at Houston, Philadelphia at San Diego, New Orleans at Chicago, and Atlanta plays the New York Giants in New Haven, Conn. The New York Jets are at Miami for Monday night's nationally televised game, completing the weekend schedule. THE PATRIOTS, winners of three straight games after a 5-9 record last season, kayoed Los Angeles a week ago, forcing the Rams into four fumbles. Jim Plunkett tossed two touchdown passes and John Smith kicked a pair of field goals against an LA defense that had surrendered only 10 points in the first two games of the season. Baltimore hopes General Manager Joe Thomas, now doubling as coach, can turn the Colts around following Indianapolis Is Host WED.

fOPEN DAILY 10-10; SUNDAY 10-6 Indianapolis will host the 56th WIBC tournament next spring, giving the Indiana capitol a national tournament for the second consecutive year. Last year, the ABC held its national tourney there. Entry forms are available from local association secretaries, most bowling centers and from the WIBC headquarters in Greendale, Wis. The ABC tourney will be in Dayton, Ohio, this year. There is another major event in the works for the first time.

The National Bowling Council announced plans to launch its own "super bowl" in 1975 which for the first time will bring together the Top Series So Far The Burlington Bowl Inn team in the Tri-City Classic established the season's top series last Tuesday when the three regulars and two subs combined forces for a 3,100 series. The team games were per- fed games much more rare. There have been only 250 perfectos bowled by 244 women since the WIBC was founded in 1916. Sylvia Martin of Philadelphia has three perfect games, while no other woman has more than two. The men also appear to be proficient at picking up the so-called impossible splits.

There were at least 3,000 7-10 splits and 3,000 "big four" splits converted, according to ABC figures. There were 200 bowlers who averaged more than 266 per game, surpassing the magic 800 mark. It takes more skill than luck to hit even 700, and last year, ABC awarded patches to more than 22,000 bowlers who passed that plateau. nation's best professional, league, collegiate and military bowlers. The "Colossus" will be held in Dayton immediately following the ABC tourney.

There will be 24 college teams, 12 each of men and women, competing for the college title. The state men's and women's champions will compete in the state champions event, and the winning armed forces teams will compete against each other. As a climax, the top 20 money winners in the mens and womens pro tours will be invited for singles tournaments with the finals being set up the same way as the televised tournament. 019, 1,060, and 1,021. Oddly enough, there were only two 600 counts, Ken Bailey's 678 and sub Bub Blevins' 641.

The other scores were Gary Goings 595, Don Johnson 594 and sub Bob Mejia 592. (AP) -Bill Marek and reserve Larry Canada scored two touchdowns apiece on Wisconsin's first five series, sparking an awesome ground attack that swept the Badgers to a 59-20 regionally televised college football victory over Missouri Saturday. Marek raced 81 yards off tackle to a touchdown on the first scrimmage play, then capped a 77-yard march of 17 running plays with a two-yard burst as the Badgers took a permanent lead of 14-7 early in the first quarter. The Badgers, 3-1, shredded a Missouri defense that had held three opponents to 2.8 yards per rush by amassing 224 yards on the ground in storming to a 35-7 halftime lead.

Gregg Bohlig ed the rout by completing his first eight passes, including a 23-yard strike to Jack Novak that set up the Badgers' fifth touchdown, a one-yard run by freshman Mike Morgan moments before halftime.
