2B THE ODESSA AMERICAN Wednesday. March 2. 1983 Monahans tops 0 baseball The Associated Press The American MONAHANS The Monahans Loboes followed great pitching in downing the Odessa baseball team 7-5 Tuesday. The game opened with five runs scored in the first inning. The Bronchos came up with two runs of their own and Monahans countered with three.

Alex Spencer started the game on the mound for the Bronchos but after giving up four runs, Broncho Coach Milt Thompson sent in Thomas Smith after the second inning. "He (Smith) had a shaky start," Thompson said. "He pitched very well for us." Smith pitched five innings and recorded three strike outs, but a lack of timely hitting spelled doom for the Bronchos and Smith ended up with the loss. The Bronchos left 11 men on base and committed three costly errors while Monahans stranded seven and had one error. Jessie Paz sparked the Broncho offense going three for four, including a triple.

Hilbert Anaya reached base twice on singles. Odessa got back in the game, scoring one in the top of sixth to tie Monahans 5-5. But the young Bronchos gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning to fall behind once again. The Bronchos tried a seventh- inning comeback but the attempt fell short. With a man on third and two outs, a pop fly ended the game.

The loss drops Odessa to 0-2. The Bronchos dropped then-season opener against Andrews Feb. 23. Odessa travels to El Paso to compete in the El Paso Tourna ment Friday and Saturday afternoon. Jazz 11 3, Rockets 112 Utah went scoreless in the last 1:47, but held on to beat Houston.

Spurs 114, Suns 109 Walter Berry scored 29 points as San Antonio handed Phoenix its third straight loss and 23rd in 28 road games this season. Trailing 87-35 after three quarters, the Spurs rallied behind Alvin Robertson. Bucks 117, Celtics 116 Milwaukee, which lost to Boston by 36 points last Friday, saw an 18-point lead dwindle to one before holding on. Pistons 11 7, Hawks 104 Detroit improved its Central Division lead to two games, beating Atlanta despite 50 points from Dominique Wil-kins. IT Monahans 7.

"Your safest, surest way of doing something is when you're playing hard. I would say right now we're doing that." Helms is trying to reverse a season-ending skid that left OC 2-2 in its final four games.

Tuesday's starter Mike Winchell, 1-0, got out of an early jam with a first inning double Ontiveros relieved Winchell in the fifth and he benefited from another double play, this one unassisted by his replacement at shortstop, Jeff Martin. Hobbs scored a run in the fifth off Ontiveros but blew a chance for more on a failed squeeze play that left Goode hung up between third and home after he led off the inning with a double. "We made a lot of mistakes today," said Worth. "Not to take anything away from Permian, they played well.

But we made a lot of mistakes in base running." Highley said he will have a much better idea of how good his team is after it plays in a three-day tournament at Abilene this weekend.
