(AP) -Joe Weatherly, the "Clown Prince of Racing," has entered and finished his last eatherly, 41, was killed Sunday in the second running of theRiverside 500-mile stock car road race. Known for his off-the-track antics and practical jokes, Weatherly was a serious, expert driver who won the NASCAR Grand National championship in AP Wirtphoto Top Teams Are Idle For Exams By BOB GREEN Associated Press Sports Writer It's tough enough retaining a national ranking just playing out the schedule. But when you don't have a schedule, man, that's double tough. And that's the situation fac ing four of the nation top ranked college basketball teams this week.

Their high positions are threatened, not by oppo nents, but by inactivity as many of the teams take a break for semester examinations. Take Week Off Top-ranked UCLA, No. 5 Da vidson and No. 6 Vanderbilt take the week off while No. 10 Duke is idle for the second straight week.

The No. 1 Bruins will be hard to dislodge, however. They reeled off victory No. 15 in an unbeaten season Saturday with an 80-61 conquest of Stanford. Walt Hazzard and Gail Goodrich again were the big guns.

Maintain Pace Michigan and Kentucky, ranked third and fourth respec tively, kept pace. Bill Buntin and Cazzie Russell led Michi gan to the top of the Big Ten with an 82-64 triumph over Ohio State while Kentucky, loser of two straight Southeast Confer ence games, bounced back 66-57 against Tennessee in Saturday games. Fifth-ranked Davidson, idle Saturday, won a couple of week- day games and remained unbeaten at 14-0. DePaul, un-ranked, knocked off Dayton 83 for its 12th straight and re mained the only other major iuv beaten. Witnesses say something ap parently happened, either to Weatherly or to the car, as he came out of turn No. 5 on the nine-turn course. Hits Wall He cut across the dirt em bankment of turn No. 6, hit the retaining wall a glancing blow and careened across the track and off the other side. Some spectators said a puff of smoke erupted from Weath- erly's engine just as he entered the turn, indicating his engine may have exploded.

Some said he drove straight across the turn, making no ef fort to turn his car. Others, in eluding Dan Gurney, winner of the race, said he was fighting the wheel. There were also reports that Weatherly appeared to be struggling with a stuck or brok en accelerator. Weatherly, who was seldom in trouble on any track, hit the barrier at speeds estimated at 60 to 100 m.p.h. Only a Seat Belt He wore only a seat belt, saying he would "rather flap around in there.

I move around so much, I'd rather have the freedom of a seat belt." It took track officials nearly five minutes to pry Weatherly out of the car. Crews said the steering wheel was wrapped around his body and he suffered severe facial and head injuries One witness said it appeared that Weatherly's head hit the wall when the car slammed into it. Officials believe that he died instantly. "If Weatherly had been using the shoulder harness, he'd probably still be with us," a track spokesman said. His widow, Joan, was a spectator at his last race.

When Wilkinson resigned, he recommended Jones as his sue cessor and said later he expect ed a smooth transition. But the regents balked and decided to go after "the best coach money can buy." But there were rumors of political maneuvering, climaxed Saturday by Wilkinson's emo tional statement announcing his resignation as athletic director "to free the regents from any further political involvement" relating to picking his succes sor.
