.1 i BY ORMA" E. BROWN Geers, grand old man of the grand circuit and most famous of sulky drivers, passed on this year. But there lives In Osage, a man who carries on the spirit of "Pop," whose love for the trotting game and service in it makes him a successor to the lovable old 'Pop." That man is John Kathan. Sixty-five years ago in the late summer of 1S59 Kathan drove his first horses to sulky. He appeared at county fairs in northern New York state.

Today, as he nears his eighty-fourth birthday, he is still driving at county fairs around Iowa. And he hopes to observe his eighty-fourth birthday next March and the advent of his sixty-sixth year in the game by developing three colts into winning horses for the 1925 fairs. Those three you may hear of them later are The Flapper, Pal O'Mine and Peter Heddon. He is working them these days at the Mitchell county fair grounds, Osage. Last summer Kathan drove horses in 14 races and won two of them.

He has driven horses on virtually every track east of the Mississippi but of late years Conines his activities mainly to Iowa tracks. He has become one of the picturesque figures of the annual state fair at Des Moines. Among the horses he has driven are Patola, 2:1314, with which he won 15 races in 16 starts in one season; Dulcie, 2:18, Roy the Kid, Buck Muscovite. 2:074, O. AlUe Dale, 2:14.

Suppose, however, the City of New York decided really to sell the Brooklyn Bridgeto give the buyer the privilege of placing a toll on all who crossed it. They would advertise it for sale.

And the prospective purchaser would know the offer to be genuine. 5 He would know that the paper would not accept the advertisement if it were intended to defraud. He would know that the advertiser would not dare advertise unless his offer were honest. The advertisement would give the world confidence in the enterprise.
