His first film was "Guadalcanal Diary" ln 1943.

He was pulled out of the mail room at 20th Century-Fox Studios and cast as a scared VS. Marine. HLs next role was also In a war film, "A Wing and a Prayer. Other pictures followed: "Sands of Iwo Jima," "Battleground," 'The Dirty Dozen," "The Gallant Hours" uTwiUght'sLaatGleaming." But it was a non-m-itary role in "Sometimes a Great Notion" that brought him an Academy award nomination for best supporting actor in 1971. Jaeckel to now back fai uniform for the ABC comedy series, "At Ease," in which he plays Ma.

Hawkins, a brass-bound martinet who tries to keep the hucksters and goldb ricks inline. Hawkins is an old warrior who's distressed that he's assigned to a computer outfit "Wars should be fought with bombs, guns and bayonets, the way civilized man has always done," he says in the series. Recently, the station began rejecting pro gramming that it deemed objectionable, and ON-TV suspended its adult movies. ON-TV is a subsidiary of Oak Industries in Rancbo Bernardo, and operates the largest pay television service in Los Angeles. The company shut down its operations in Phoenix on March 31 when it ran into what it DALLAS (AP) ON-TV will become the second casualty in a battle for subscription television subscribers that once included four competing services, officials said. ON-TV officials announced last week that the service will cease operations on April 30, leaving VEU and Movie Vision as the only survivors in the dwindling market for non-cable pay television here.

Another subscription service, Preview, was absorbed by VEU last year. The services began operations in late 1980 and early 1961 before cable television became available in Dallas and Fort Worth. Since then, cable service has been started in both cities. ON-TV made its decision to close after it suspended its all-night adult service recently and suffered an accompanying loss of subscribers. The service was involved in legal tangles during 1982 with KTXA-TV, from which it leased air time.

Over the objections of KTXA- called a "censorship'' problem with the sta tion from which it leased ah time, The Dallas Morning News reported. Rob Hartney, vice president of corporate relations for Oak Industries, said the deci sions to terminate ON-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth and Phoenix is "peculiar to the situa tionsin those two cities" and would have "ab Television solutely no effect on our other operations.
