Community Action Agency Finds Poverty Causes By Mrs. lone Ransdell The Daniel Boone Community Action Agency at a rfccent meeting looking into needs and priorities of low income families, found that unemployment, under employment and lack of day care facilities for children were major causes of low income. 33 persons at the meeting determined the priorities for reducing the problems: Day care center, vocational training, small businesses, hdusing improvements, legal aide, health and medical services, family counselling, services for the elderly, job training and employment of those 18 to 21 years old. Mrs. Kenneth Totten of the Oak Grove Church is presiding. FRIENDS HERE have received invitations to the wedding of Miss Vivian Ruth Barr who is to be married Sunday, November 7 at 2:00 p. m. at the Christian Church at Fredericktown to Eugene C.

Pinegar. Miss Barr is a daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Charles Barr who formerly lived here when Mr. Barr was pastor of the Christian Church.

They moved from here to Fredericktown. NINE WOMEN were present at the meeting of Circle I at the Paris United Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Allen Forbis presented the lesson, "How the Word Gets Around." Members voted to donate $5.00 for the pastor's camera which he will take to the Holy Land when he goes in November. THE QUARTERLY meeting THE THREE chapters of Xi of Baptist Women of the Beta Xi had a joint Halloween Monroe County Baptist party at the Mark Twain Association is today at the Country Club Monday night for transport for Aged Now Signing Up OATS Members members, it was a costume party.

Mrs. Edwin A. DeLaney, Mrs. Ray DeLaney and Mrs. Jim Shelburne received prizes for their costumes.

The group enjoyed playing traveling bingo. Pledges Mrs. Ray Parrish, Mrs. Edwin Buie and Mrs. Charles Herron were guests.

Room decoration was a shock of corn surrounded by pumpkins. Table decorations were fall flowers, pumpkins and candles. A hobo style supper was served. Beef stew served in tin cans, jello in baby food jars, hot bread and apple sauce cake. The committee arranging for the event were: Mrs.

Gene Havens, chairman, Mrs. Larry Moore and Mrs. Ross Thompson, cochairman, Mrs. Sarah Richards, Mrs. Bob Sladek, Mrs.

Bob Swartz, Mrs. Carroll Blackwell, Mrs. Kent Smith, Mrs. Gene Bounds, Mrs. Dale Vanhuss, and Mrs.

Jerry Peck. MR. AND MRS. Albert Rouse spent the week end at Mt. Vernon where they visited Mrs.

Rouse's daughter Mrs. Jim Freeman and Mr. Freeman and family. Mrs. Tommy Johnson of Paris accompanied them and visited her husband who is a patient in the sanitarium there.

LEDGER Page 3 Thursday October 21, 1971 Centralia Clubs Have Commemorating Tea Wellsville Gardeners Sally Clark Sally Clark Trip Winner For Foods MONTGOMERY CITY Sally Clark, 17, a junior at Montgomery County R-2 High School, has been chosen to attend the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, Nov. 28- Dec. 2, with all expenses paid. Her food preservation project won her the trip. Six Missourians won trips, two of them from Montgomery County.

Melba Stevens will go as a health project winner. Miss Clark is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Clark. She has been active in 4-H foods projects for seven years and is a member of the Buell Busy Bodies 4-H Club.

A foods leader, she has canned and, frozen more than 100 fruit, vegetable and meat items. Her specialty is hot dog relish. By Mrs. Joe Sydenstricker persons in this area who are interested in the Older Adults Transportation System (OATS) are asked to contact Malcom Essen, Director, whose office is in the Basement of the Callaway County Court House, Room 2, or members of the committee, jFred Carr, chairman, Judge Herring, Gertrude Davis or L. Jjruce Edwards (of this community).

This is a pilot time anywhere. OATS is a nonprofit organization covering eight mid-Missouri counties. The primary purpose of the is to provide transportation to doctors and medical centers. However, the jlder adults will be able to use the system for business or pleasure. The buses have already been and are to be soon.

The system is to be in operation Nov. 1. Life membership for older adult will be $1. This will be a voting membership, giving the member the privilege of electing officers and the privilege of using the system. Annual dues will be $5 with a small mileage charge being made to the member when he or she is acutally using the service.

The service will operate at least one day per week in each of the eight counties in the Mid- Missouri Region (Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau and Osage). How these three fifteen- passenger busses will be allocated to the eight counties will depend on the need as indicated by the sale of memberships. To be eligible to use this service, a person (1) must be 55 years of age or over or handicapped, (2) purchase at least one share of stock at $1 a share and (3) purchase a membership at $5 per year. The purchase of the stock is a one time expense. The stock is good for life and is non-transferable.

The meditation for Worship was given by Mrs. J. J. Ausmus, who also gave a reading entitled "Being in the Business of Staying Young." Mrs. Wm.

W. Bradley, President of the 4th District of the MFWC, gave a welcoming address. Mrs. Paul Sturgeon introduced the speaker, Mrs. Virginia Botts, a member of the Boone County Sesquicentennial Commission, who spoke on Missouri Sesquicentennial activities.

Mrs. Arlene Enyeart, School Vocal Instructor, presented "Six for the a boys' vocal group from the First Baptist Church. THE CENTRALIA Chamber of Commerce held a meeting Tuesday morning and made plans for a dinner meeting this Oct. 26 at the Country Club. Gene Sigman, chamber president, hopes to have the dinner evolve into a regular monthly function of the chamber.

He also announced that Mrs. Robert Jones is the newly hired secretary for the Chamber of Commerce in City Hall and will be in the office daily from 10 a. m. until noon. Mrs.

Jones was also recently appointed the official Welcome Wagon Hostess for Centralia and will be calling on all newcomers to the community. Mr. Sigman returned on Wednesday morning from a two day session of the Missouri Community Betterment Conference and Award Banquet at the Ramada Inn in Jefferson City. MR. AND MRS.

Don Dean of Route 2 became parents of a son on Sunday. The baby, Daniel Lee, weighed four pounds 14 ounces and was born at the Audrain County Medical Center. He has two brothers, Michael, 10, and Steven, 8. TWO JUNIOR GIRL Scout Troops held their Rededication Ceremonies this week at which time the girls renewed their Girl Scout Promise and reviewed their laws. Troop 231 held theirs on Tuesday with 18 girls participating.

Berger, vice president; Mrs. LeRoy Pease, second vice president; Mrs. John W. Bishop, secretary; Mrs. R.

Plans were made to attend the Mid-Central District Convention in Elsberry, October 27. Five members plan to go. Other guests at the meeting were Mrs. Clarence Smith and Mrs. George Jacobi.

The next meeting will be a Silent Auction at the home of Mrs. Berger. AT THE CHAMBER of Commerce meeting Tuesday night at Midtown Cafe, the Halloween Parade on Saturday, Oct. 30, was discussed. Another meeting for final planning will be held on Thursday.

The Christmas lighting project was also discussed. The committee will meet again and report. On the lighting committee are Frank McMurtry, Robert Brace, Howard Wiggs, Mike Shire and a representative from the Kiwanis Club and Jaycees. Don Burwell, president, was in charge of the of meeting. Joe Peery and Mr. Ralph Debo attended Homecoming events at Central College, Fayette, Saturday. Miss Marcia Peery, Wellsville, is a member of the college marching band, in the tuba section. Twenty-four high school bands, including Montgomery R-2 band, participated in the Home coming parade. Central lost its football game to the Marshall Vikings, 6-7.

The Candy Stripers are sponsored by the Business and Professional Women of Vandalia. LT. COLONEL Eugene S. Korpal has joined his wife and daughters in Honolulu after completing his second tour of duty in Vietnam. He will be stationed there for the remainder of the year.

Korpal is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley E. Korpal of Vandalia. MISS KAREN Wasson of Denver is spending a two week vacation with her parents, Mr.

and Mrs. James Wasson of Route 1. Daryl Wasson and Gordon Kraft drove to Denver to accompany her home and also returned Ray Riney who had spent three weeks visiting his daughter, Mrs. Virgil Thompson, Mr. Thompson and family in Denver.

MRS. PHIL (Jewel) Rutsch, sister of Mrs. Alex H. Williams, Sr. of Vandalia, died last Wednesday in St.

Louis. Mrs. Williams, Alex H. Williams, Vicki and Larry attended the burial services in St. Louis Saturday morning.

MRS. MAUDE Galloway, mother of Paul Galloway and a resident of the Tri-County Nursing Home, is a patient in the Audrain Medical Center after suffering a fall at the home. MRS. W. A.

Bland is a patient in the Audrain Medical Center, Room 368, after undergoing surgery on Tuesday. A GROUP of citizens of Vandalia and Farber met Tuesday in the social room of the Vandalia State Bank and organized the Van-Far Athletic Boosters Club. Officers elected were President, Gerald Hesse; vice president, Don Workes; secretary, Mrs. Paul Trower; and treasurer, Jim Goodin. The membership drive will start immediately with a general meeting to be held in November at which time the board of directors will be elected.
