6P THE ODESSA AMERICAN Sunday, Jan. 13, 1985 Youll Never Really Know How effective A Cla.ttified Ii Until Vow Use One Yourself. Cop role restrains Ed dievMjurphy You're Invited to Ely JIM SANDERSON plete character a nd, in order to move the plot, Murphy must deliver some dramatic and expository Partially because director Martin Brest cannot find anything amusing to put in these scenes, Murphy is dull in them. In addition, Brest and writer Daniel Petrie want the film to be an action film as well as a comedy. Brest, though, just doesn't film action very well.

He creates no brisk pace or tense Brest has the standard car crashing at the beginning of the film and the bloody shoot-out at the end. The villainous driver of a runaway semi who smiles as he crushes cars brings some humor to the car crashing. But in a jarring murder and in the closing scenes, Brest mixes violence and comedy, shattering the tone of the film. With blood spurting from villains and bullets flying, Taggert and Rosewood go through a comic routine. The two characters seem impervious to the bullets, like they were only props, and thus destroy tension.

And the dying villains and gushing blood destroy Rheinhold's and Ashton's repartee. The result is that the film is neither a comedy nor a detective film. It has no consistent tone. It has no movement. And Murphy, like other "hot" comedians, must work out their major problem with films: the necessary restraint of plot and character.

In Beverly Hills Cop he is too restrained. In Beverly Hills Cop, tough Detroit detective Axel Foley takes a vacation to Beverly Hills to find the murderer of a friend. The cultural clash between a street-wise, inner city cop with questionable means and the suburban-wise Beverly Hills cops, who look like lawyers and who call culprits "sir" while reading them their rights, promises conflict and interest in Beverly Hills Cop. In his first scene as Foley, Eddie Murphy poses as a fast talking con man selling black market cigarettes to two thugs. "This brand is a popular brand with the children," he says.

Foley, like Murphy's other screen characters, is an extension of the persona that he developed on Saturday Nfight Live a cocky black man trying to make it out of the ghetto with nothing but bluff and charm. He uses his strut, cocked head, ingratiating smile and rhythmic speech to convince rather than any logic or substance and to hide outlandish self -promotion. In fact, Murphy is one of those performers for whom plot and character exist only as a thin veneer for persona. So the foul-mouthed, jive-talking Murphy character is a perfect foil for the polished, computer-equipped, ultra white Beverly Hills cops (Foley tries to teach a black Yuppie cop how to talk black). When he turns on his SNL routine to con his way into a swank hotel or luncheon club, or out of the police headquarters, Murphy is funny.

He sparkles with just a glance an a smile at two obviously rich, chicly dreitsed punksters walking down Rodeo Drive. And Murphy reveals a properly superior at titude when he walks into an "art" gallery with the most decadent type of art and tries to decipher and question the thickly accented and aloof clerk, "Serge," Foley calls him, short for Sergio. In a more subtle manner, Judge Rheinhold as Detective Billy Rosewood and John Ashton as Sgt. Taggert arc funny as they try in their innocent manner to adapt to Foley. Dressed well, courteous, gangly Rheinhold's Rosewood has the confidence but none of the bluff to match Foley's detective work.

Rhinehold can't kcsep pace with Murphy but makes a watchablc straight man. But Murphy's schtick or scenes with Ashton or Rheinhold can't carry the film and don't deliver the pi romise of its idea. Foley's bits of onning do not make a com TRACTOR PULL January 20 2:00 5:00 pm Lubbock Municipal Coliseum Admission Charge CONTINENTAL SHOW January 20 1:00 5:00 pm Civic Center Exhibit Hall Admission Charge KHIVA SHRINE TEMPLE CIRCUS January 26-27 Lubbock Civic Center Admission Charge LUBBOCK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA February 1-2 8:15 pm John Farrer, Conductor Lubbock Civic Center Theatre Admission Charge Movie creates demand for Mumford T-shirts FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL THE LUBBOCK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, (806) 763-4666. said. This 'English hard-rock band's previous album, "4," was a hap-l py surprise for the way the group I dropped its macho posturing and surrendered to terse rock-and-Jroll.
