KEBKKB, Work on the rapids at Duck Creek chain is progressing most satisfactorily. Messrs. Case A the contractors, undoubtedly understand their business thoroughly. On tbe 8ih day of September last they commenced erecting the huge coffer dam which covers the worst spot of the chain. This coffer dm is 235 feet w.de and 450 feet long, made of upright plank filled in with rock and land.

Tbe area included comprises 87,900 feet. Ths sides art six feet thick, and the head and foot are each eight feet thick. On the 15th day of October the dam was completed, and on the 22d day of October all tbe water had been pumped out, so that workmen could commence operations. Tbe manner of procedure then was by hand drilling and blasting, one pound of powder being used to every cubio yard of stone extracted. The number of cubic yards taken out up to now amounts to 2,200.

At first 60 men were employed, but ss the work progressed more were added as fast aa they could be procured, and now 190 are at 'work. It is expected that in ten days from now enough rock will have been taken from Duck Creek chain to make a safe channel through it thus wiping out this nuisance to navigation forever. Most of the rock taken out has been placed in cribs made by order of Major Eison, of Qeneral Rodman's staff, and placed at the bead of the island. The coffer dam is within 330 yards of the Iowa shore, and is a most substantial piece of workmanship well worthy a -visit. Above and below the coffer dam are two bad spots, which are being reduced in their dimensions by 5,000 lb.
