February 1983: Yvelyne "Deedy" Marix, a descendant of Charlemagne, the daughter of Count and Countess Henri de Marcellus, and the granddaughter of a British suffrigist, is elected the town's 12th mayor. May 1984: Henry's Flagler's Seagull Cottage, the oldest house in Palm Beach, is saved from the wrecker's ball during The Breakers' expansion by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, which moves the house to its current site, by the Royal Poinciana Chapel, and restores it. Sept. 27, 1984: Tropical Storm Isidore's high winds and rough surf cause severe erosion on Palm Beach, sending an entire section of State Road A1A plunging into the ocean.

11, 1942: U.S. Army commandeers Breakers Hotel, renames it Ream General Army Hospital. April 1948: John H. Perry Sr. of Perry Publications buys the Palm Beach Daily News.

Michael Paul's house where the president often stayed because it was easier to secure than the Kennedy estate President Kennedy conducts military talks with Vice President Lyndon Johnson, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. McNamara stays at the C.B. Wrightsman estate.

June 15, 1955: Circuit Judge C.E. Chillingworth and his wife Marjorie Croude McKinley are abducted from their Manalapan beach home and murdered in the early morning hours at sea. Summer 1955: South Palm Beach and Hypoluxo are incorporated.

1973: Barbara Hoffstot publishes Landmark Architecture of Palm Beach and calls for preserving the town's architectural heritage. 1974: Temple Emanu-El synagogue at 190 N. County Road completed. June 5, 1974: The Palm Beach Daily News completes its move to its current office at 265 Royal Poinciana Way. The building formerly had been band leader Marshall Grant's nightclub, 265 Place.
