Some created clothes as thin and fragile as angel hair. Others went for the rigatoni, producing bulky, tubular sportswear. New York, Paris and London do their share when it comes to clothing the Palm Beach woman. The Italians, however, understand us best because we share a subtropical climate.

Palm Beach clothes must be like thermostats, adapting as the sun comes up or the air conditioning goes down. The Italians know how to keep us comfortable, layering clothes, keeping air between fabric and body so the skin can breath. The Italian ready-to-wear collections were recorded in Milan by photographer Charles Gerli. He brought back the documented fashion messages from Krizia, Fendi, Ferre, Versace and Armani shown on this page. Missoni, always a favorite in travel wardrobes, did linen and cotton rainbow stripe tunics over sarong skirts and pants.

Missoni, with an Italian shrug, seems to say, "Missoni is Missoni. It's always good, always a little different but never radically new." There's an important fashion story in linen. The Italians are going to save you the trouble of getting it wrinkled. Gianni Versace introduced draped dinner dresses made of crinkled linen. Giorgio Armani avoided the issue.

He used linen jacquard fabric for suits. Jacquard doesn't crease. Every Italian collection had one or two "forceful" styles.
