Of Mercy Hopi'al we need not say more than that it is a noble institution well founded stoutly supported and endowed by the county and city authorities; by the medical profession round about by the peopie, without regard to nationality or sect endorsed by all who love sweet charity and believe in true benevolence, Even as we are all liable to need minister ing care in sickness even as we would seek for the alleviation of human pain and suffering, so let us with overflowing hearts and willing hands labor for the up building and the upholding forever of Mercy Hospital. Groceries for the millions at Wm.

G. Shorey's house, on the corner of Seventeenth and Harrison. A crowd soon collected, and Mr. Shorey who was working on a house near Brady street, and neighbors who soon arrived, used buckets with considerable dexterity. The flames soon spread to the pump factory adjoining, and as everything was very dry the buildings burned like tinder.

In spite of all the efforts of those on the spot, the buildings were soon in ruins. Tbe neighboring of Mr. Sborey and Mr. Maguire, wero in great danger for a time, and it was onlj by the most strenuous efforts that they were saved from de struction. As it was, all the furniture was removed, and the trees and outside of the buildings were badly scorched.

While the building) were burning, a large crowd assembled, and about a hundred water works trench diggers, working on Harri son street, quit work and rendered what assistance was in their power. No alarm was sounded down town, and but few people below the bluff knew of the fire. Prof. Sheldon rang tho College bell, but few knew what it wa9 ringing for. No fire companies turnoj out, but a number of from the Hamburg Hook and Ladder Company, with buckets and hooks came over and rendered some assist ancj.

The buildings destroyed were the pump factory, barn and outhouse all ba- longing to J. G. Shorey. Tbe total loss amounts to about $3,600 on the factory and machinery $3,000 on pump ma terial, consisting of five hundred pump handles, 500 buckets and other stuff in the factory, $400 on the barn $150 on the outhouse $25. The machinery was totally ruined, but the boiler was not in jured.

Tho factory and contents were in sarcd for $2,000, in the Home, of Columbus, aad Imperial, of London, Hartwell's agency. The cause of the Cre is a mystery. There had n.o work been done in the factory for seven months there was no fire the house, and no one was near the barn when the fire started. Either it was the work of an incendiary, or a spark caught in the straw in the barn. Neck wear at Ryan'.

The only possible objection which can made to the investing of a small turn what is known as lottery speculation, the current idea that the distribution is honestly carried out, and that the largest prizes fall to the share of apocry phal names having no real existence. There have been, however, recently, three grand gift concerts, which have been conducted on the highest principles of honor, and with which the public baye been perfectly satisfied even parties holding unsuccessful shares readily testifying to the liberality and honesty of the managers and the strict impartiality of the method drawing. These drawings were for benefit of the Public Library of Kentucky, and a fourth concert on a still more magnificent basis is new in preparation. equitably are the prizes in this new adventure arranged, that every fifth ticket holder draws a gift, and the grand first gift of 1250,000 my thus ba secured by outlay of $50, whilo other prizes aggregating $1,500,000 and ranging from $100,000 to $150 will be submitted to the turn of the wheel.and the fiat of fickle For tune. The most daring specuUtion, reck lessly made by the most fortunate man in other way could not be expected to yield uch a reward for outlay as will this concert in Kentucky, and it is quite within the limits of probability that any of readers investing a trifle in this speculation may realize a fortune which will make them independent for life.

Richard son, of the Democrat, W. M. Potter and George H. Ballou, of the Gazttte. The party was most cord iully welcomed by Mother Superior Barromeo, risted awhile in the refreshing cbade of the premises, and when all had arrived, pro ceeded to an informal inspection of tbe establishment through its various apart- men's.

A short tarry was mcde in the reception room, where the visitors rrgittered their names; then took a view of the dispen sary, where in a large case are deposited the contents of a tolerably stocked drug store. Physicians prescriptions, we were informed, are carefully filled from this dispensary, by one of the eistera, who has become skilled in the art. This Is a great saving to the patients treated there, besides saving much precious time when immediate medicinal aid is required. The compounding is always circfull done. Up through tho sceoad aad third floors of tho building the thea moved, looking through tha various apirtmmts devoted to geneial and single patients the chapel, which is sion to be trtnaform- ed into a surgery after a pUce of worship has been privided tl.iiwhero the Sisters' itting room and all rest.

Thee apart ments throughout present to the visitor the most carut'ul aai cleanly aspect ttie building and furniture all neat au orderly, the ventilation perfect to a degree. About tho walla of theaa roomi for patients, pleasing pictures and bits of art work are disposed good reading is almost everywhere at hand excellent house keeping, thorough management and refined taste is everywhere plain to be Been. deed, it is quite a 'usury, if one must go to the Hospital, to bo cared for in the manner aspatients are provided for ana attended to at Mercy Hospital by these noble-hearted Sisters of Mercy. There are twelve general and four pri vate patients now in the hospital, all of whom, and hundreds who have been there previously, attest to the sisterly care and tenderness with which they are and ever have bjen treated. The inspection of the culinary depart ment was in like manner perfectly satisfactoryeverything in perfect order horoughly clesn and systemitic through out.

Across the grcun Is the party next moved to the Insane Asylum, a separate building erected last year, and occupied solely by those unfortunates who have unhappily been berefc of reason. There are two principal stories. On the first are the female patients, fourteen in number, each provided with large neatly kept sleeping rooms ranged along on either side of a wide corridor running the entire length of the building, amply ventillated. Tbe fl'or above contains the male twelve in nnmber, disposed as below in excellent rooms, with plenty of hall space for airing and exercise. Never have we seen the insane better provided than at this hospital.

In duo season the visitors were conducted to the spacious dining room, where a bountiful collation was served in the most appitizing manner, of which the medical gentlemen partook with great It was a fair sample of the usual hospital fare bread, meate, fruit, coffee, Dr. Tomson, as President of the Hospital Medic il Board, presided at the repast, and in season, in behalf of the Sisters, thanked the gentlemen for their friendly visit, and invited, from tuth as were disposed, an expression of opinion up wLat they had witnessed. Dr. I'luinmer, of liitk Island, responded as follows Gentlemen We have assembled here reprcstutatiyes of the medical profession, on invitation from the Sisters in charge of this beautiful home for tbe sick and afflicted, and it is but our duty to those who originated and those who have charge of Mercy Hospital that we should give1 expression of our appreciation of the labor they have performed and the results that labor therefore I offer tbe following resolutions Resolved, That we give it as our unbiased opinion, that Mercy Hospital, in location, construction of building, ventilation and management in every department, is perfection, and that too much credit cannot be bestowed on Mother Barroaieo and her corps of assistants. Resolved, That we know of no better institution to which we can refer such patients as require hospital treatment, and tbat we pledge it our undivided good will, influence and patronage.

Dr. Maxwell testified to tbe excellence the institution its great value to the public its perfect management, and untold benefit to the public. Dr. Biker, as a member outside the Hospital Board, said it was his first visit tbat he was highly delighted and gratified what he bad seen, and hoped it would become the future policy of the Hospital make it possible for regular physicians send patients there, with the privilege personal attendance therein hoping tbe highest and fullest guccosh of so worthy an institution. On behalf of the press, remarks were made by Mr.

Potter, of the Gazette who was then making his first visit, and who had been thoroughly pleased and gratified the facilities and excellent management the place alsa by D.N. Richardson, the Democrat, who heartily commended the institution. Dr. Gait, of Rock Island, warmly endorsed what had been said of the hospital, and hoped for its continual prosperity. Dr.

Truesdaie thanked the Sisters cordially indeed, for the opportunity thus afforded the profession of bearing witness the existence of so fine and so properly conducted an institution in our midst, and heartily seconded Dr. Plummer's resolution, which was unanimously adopted, also a vote of thanks to tbe Sisters (or their kindly entertainment.
