"Most people have the idea that Michael and I have split once and for all," she told me. "That's not true. We are still very much in love with each other, but we felt strongly that it was time for a rest, time for us to take some time away from each other and think about the future. This separation may really strengthen us. But I can't say what will happen. You might open the paper tomorrow and see that I'm married to someone else. You might see that Michael and I got married." It's been a disappointing year for Brenda. Not only did her live- in love affair break up, but also NBC cancelled her TV series, "Sara." "1 wanted the show to succeed," she said. "Everyone on it worked very hard. It's difficult in television. You never really know why something didn't work. I liked Sara because I felt we were very much alike. We were both no-nonsense people.". . ."The Divine Miss M", Bette Midler, who walked out on her pact to star in several TV specials for ABC because the network brass would not give her "artistic approval" over the submitted scripts as well as guest stars, has just signed a new deal. Bette will star in her own variety-special for NBC-TV come next year. . .TV and movie viewers see Don Knotts as the trembling coward, the 120-pound weakling who used to get sand kicked in his face in the old Charles Atlas ads. His eyes bulge and roll, his lips writhe in fear, his whole body trembles. It's a characterization that has made him one of the most popular screen comedians —. and rich, besides. But at one time he felt his slight stature was such a drawback that he took up wrestling. "I was small and I was poor. I was unhappy most of the time," said the 5'8" actor. "I felt like a lower in my childhood. We didn't have any money, and I hated my size, so I joined the Morgantown High School wrestling team. Maybe taking up wrestling was to compensate for the things that had happened to me.". . .Jim Arness and Amanda Blake, who starred together on "Gunsmoke," had a reunion over lunch here recently. Asked if she's firm about staying retired on her Arizona ranch, Amanda said, "The show ran 20 years. I'm still resting." . . .At a small party for friends, Warren Beatty screened some of those old "Dobie Gillis" TV shows 'he was in 15 years ago. He beat the guests to the punch by admitting that he was terrible. . . * * * Inside The Tube: Cloris Leachman is one of the hottest personalities in the entertainment world today. "Phyllis! is doing fine, and I think everyone at home is doing fine, too. I do fine when I remember to separate out some time from both just for me — otherwise I get lost in the chaos. My kids are all capable of caring for themselves. They have been taught how to survive. All are bright and interesting people. Having been exposed to a lot, they have emerged very much as their own people." That's all very much in keeping with her lifestyle. ' Her vegetarianism and crusading against smoking have labeled her as a bit of a nut — and she doesn't mind at all. "I refuse to live by the norms. I misbehave. I refuse to take myself seriously. I'm spontaneous and so much of the spontaneity has been drummed out of people and life." Cloris refuses to be drawn into a discussion of her peculiar — and oddly sound — marriage to George Englund. They live together a lot of the time, and the a lot of the time they don't. But they are always in touch, and very close and supportive of each other. "The truth is," she says, "I'm an advocate of whatever will get you through life alive!". . .Greg Mullavey spends so many hours per week being "Tom Hartman" that it's creating problems at home. His wife, Meredith McRae, is having a tough time finding work, too, though she's well remembered for "Petticoat Junction" and other TV roles.. . .Totie Fields, now installed in the Mt. Sinai in L.A., is the hospital's stellar attraction. Her visitors on a recent day included Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, Jim Nabors, Dean Martin, and James Caan. • And Glen Campbell showed up with a set of the new board game "Othello." He and Totie started to play, and the nurses almost had to drag him out! "It's like working in a movie studio," commented one nurse. . .Agent Sue Mengers tossed a party for newswoman Barbara Walters that brought out the Hollywood elite: Kirk and Anne Douglas, Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, Sara Miles and director John Schlesinger. But Barbara seemed most impressed with economist Alan Greenspan. In fact, they held hands all night!. . .Most actors hate to see their TV series' cancelled. But it can work out all right. Mark Shera had "S.W.A.T." Nielsened out from under, but signed right on with next season's "Barnaby Jones." He'll co-star with Buddy Ebsen, playing a young aspiring lawyer named J. R. Jones. . . Pounding the TV Beat: M-AS-H star Loretta Swift (Hot Lips Houlihan to you) ordered a custom made bed from Hollywood interior decorator Doug Hiatt. He hired 45 men — carpenters, upholsteres, painters and draftsmen — to do the job. And all for a mere $5,000, a bargain considering the size of the job. . .Legenday jazz superstar Lionel Hampton, appointed to direct special entertainment projects for President Ford's rejection campaign, will be saluted at the Waldorf Astoria November 12th by the Amsterdam News, and then will head for a tour of Japan-. . .Daytime TV Magazine's editors report that Johanna Leister, who is Phoeben Johnson on "The Edge of Night," is serious about her two-year romance with actor-singer Ross Petty. . .Anson Williams, who stars as Potsie on TV's "Happy Days," is trying to get a singing career going. But so far he's having trouble finishing his numbers. He was trying out his act at the Southern California Exposition when a gaggle of screaming teenage girls ripped off his pants. They didn't steal them, mind you. They actually ripped them off his legs. Or whatever. Not the worst problem for a beginning crooner, but still. . .Adrienne Barbeau, who plays the liberated daughter on the hit series "Maude," will be back next year for her 5th consecutive season, with a Page 13 Garden City Telegram Tuesday, Sept. 21,1976 healthy raise in pay. She will also be featured in two ABC premiere movies, "The Great Houdini" and "Giving Birth." Her ship as they say, has definitely arrived. . . * * * On the Sports Scene: All the attention being given in the media to transsexual tennis player Dr. Renee Richards has resulted in unprecedented interest in the current issue of Blueboy Magazine, which by coincidence has a list of places to go around the nation for sex-change operations. "I never realized that so many people are interested in sex- change operations," says publisher Donald N. Embinder. "We planned on having the list long before that Dr. Richards story boke.". . . Davis, an 18-year veteran of the majors with a .294 lifetime average, will be on hand when the Royals begin a three-game series with the Oakland A's Tuesday. A sweep of the series would put the Royals only half a game away from clinching the division. "We plan to use him in a pinch hitting role,'" said Coach Whitey Herzog. "He gives us another clutch hitter down the stretch. He may be able to get a big hit for us that may make a difference in one of our remaining games." Appearing in 72 games this season mostly as a pinch and designated hitter, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Davis batted .265, collected 26 RBIs and hit three home runs. He was purchased for an undisclosed amount of cash. The Telegram - Z75-7105
