A I mil nf oniai HIGH SINGLE GAME--Sheila Pinkston, Washington, D.C turned in the high single-game score in the Virginia Queens Tournament at Riverside Lanes yesterday with a 248. WEST POINT. N.Y.

A Freshman linebacker Carl McGee raced 68 yards with an intercepted pass and Mike Dunn, a first-year quarterback, directed two scoring strikes in leading Duke to a 21-10 college football victory over Army on Saturday. ChuckWilliamson'sfour-yard run capped an 81-yard drive midway through the second pe- riod, giving Duke a 14-0 lead. Mike Barney, who rushed for 109 yards in his first start, scored the final touchdown on a one-yard end run early in the fourth quarter, four plays after Duke's first fumble recovery in five games. It was Duke's second triumph. Army, losing for the third time after starting the season with two victories, ral- lied to within 14-10 on seven consecutive pass completions by Leamon Hall, including a seven-yarder Tor a touchdown to Tony Pyne.

Barney's score put the game nut of reach after Laniel Craw- sord recovered a fumble by Pyne at the Army 35. The winners turned back two late threats at their one-yard line when Tom Knotts inter- cepted a Hall pass and Hod Sensibaugh recovered another fumble by Pyne after a 32-yard gain. The game ended with Army on the Duke six after Hall com- pleted five more passes for 80 yards. Hall, whose first two passes were intercepted, the.second for McGee's touchdown, fin- ished with 16 completions in 24 attempts for 222 yards. The Blue Devils drove 54 yards in a steady rain to the Army eight after Troy Slade re- turned the opening kickoff 32 yards.

But on fourth down, Barney, who carried 22 limes, was stopped at the seven, three yards shy of a ft st down. Duke's Tony Benjamin, who also rushed for 109 yards, fum- Wake's 12 after a a f'jve-yard offside penalty was imposed against the Deacons. Clemson went for the successful field goal. Clemson held Wake at its own 22, 30 and 37 in the final period before moving towards its game-winning kick. The game ieft Wake Forest 1- 1 in the ACC and 1-4 overall.

Ciemson is 1-0 in the confer- ence and 1-4 for the season. Clemson moved 67 yards for its first touchdown and the sec- ond came on a 17-yard drive after Mark Hanford intercepted a pass. Wake Forest was aided by a holding and a pass inter- ference penalty in its 81-yard 'initial scoring drive. The vis- itors' second touchdown came after John Sabia covered a fumble at the Clemson 28. While Clemson gave up the ball five times on fumbles, Wake Forest handed it over three times on pass inter- ceptions and once on a fumble.

The Hueytown, driver, who is more famous for his ex- ploits in NASCAR Grand Na- tional racing, ied 58 of the 67 laps on Trenton's mile and a half track. His wi ning time was 42 minutes and 47.27 sec- onds for an average speed of 127.967 "miles per hour. He won $2,475 of the 514,650 purse.

There were no accidents and the race went the full distance without a caution flag. How- ever, the start was delayed more than an hour by rain. The only other hold the lead during the race was Paul Fess of Mount Pleasant. in a Camaro. Fess took the lead from Allison on lap 10 and held it until lap 19.

He remained close behind Alli- son until lap 52 when he made a lengthy pit stop. Unlike the other cars, which have exterior couplings to their fuel tanks, Fess' pit crew had to open the trunk to add.gas". It kept him in the pit for more than 20 sec- onds, compared to Allison's pit stop which lasted nine seconds. Allison's margin of victory over Fess was only 10 seconds." Allison had won the pole posi- tion for Ihe race during Friday time trials with a time of 40.063 seconds or l34.78Tm.p.h. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)- "North Carolina played in- spired football, but I just think our kids showed remarkable poise," said a relieved Coach Dan Devine of 15th ranked Notre Dame Saturday. He had just seen bis young team fight back from a 14-0 fourth quarter deficit and score a 21-14 victory. "I'm just proud to be coSch- ing these kids. My joy is some- what tempered by feeling sorry for North Carolina," Devine said.

ECU Trips The Citadel CHARLESTON', S.C; (AP) Quarterback Pete Conaty kick- ed a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter and the East Caro- lina defense made Ihe margin hold as the Pirates edged The Citadel 3-0 Saturday night in a Southern Conference football game. The Bulldogs appeared to be back in the game in the second period when speedster Mike Ri- ley returned an East Carolina punt 57 yards for an apparent touchdown.

But an illegal blocking call nullified the play. Conaty's game-winning kick came midway in the first peri- od after The Citadel had held ECU four times on the Bulldog 3 yard line. East Carolina upped its record to 3-3 and 2-2 in the con- ference. The Citadel dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the con- ference. Both teams were plagued by turnovers and neither was able to generate much offensive ex- citement during the game.

A victory would have given the Bulldogs a share of first place in the Southern Confer- ence with VMI and Richmond. The Citadel missed another -scoring opportunity in the.final period when Peter Bistrian was sacked six inches short of a first down on a fourth and two situation. The Bulldogs had moved from their own 41 yard line to the East Carolina 36 when they attempted the ill-fated picth-out around right end. The Pirates also missed a second half scoring chance thanks to a blocked fieid goal. East Carolina had marched from its own 35 down to The Citadel 17 when Larry Baugh, subbing for Conaty who suf- fered a bruised thigh, at- the field goal.

But the kick was tow and the ball bounced off Ihe Bulldog fine. Both teams lost the ball twice on fumbles. The Pirates also gave the bali away once on an interception while the Bulldogs had three aerials intercepted. East Carolina managed 191 yards on the ground Is SS for The Citadel. Hail com- pleted three passes for 56 yards in a nine-play drive, hitting Pyne for a touchdown 42 sec- onds before the intermission. Mike Casteili's 25-yard field Moal five minutes into the Ihird quarter made it 14-10 but Duke put the game away following Pyne's fumble two plays before the end of the period.
