Cloris Leachman stars as the effervescent Phyllis, and is ably supported by Henry Jones in the role of Judge Dexter, her mother-in-law's second husband, Jane Rose as Audrey Dexter, the mother-in-' law, Judith Lowry as the quick-witted octogenarian, Mother Dexter, and Lisa Gerritsen as Phyllis's teenage daughter, Bess. New regular cast members joining the second season of "Phyllis" are John Lawlor as Supervisor Leonard Marsh, Garn Stephens as Administrative Assistant Harriet Hastings, and Carmine Caridi as Supervisor Dan Valenti. In the opening episode of the second season, Phyllis is without a job and bemoaning her fate. Judge Dexter comes to the rescue and arranges an interview for Phyllis with Paul Jameson, a young San Francisco supervisor. Coincidentally, Jamesdn learns that he's about to be indicted for fraud and involves his innocent, politically glamor-struck visitor in helping him "get rid of the evidence."
