How Baby Sailfish Migrate GORDON PASS CAMP, IHC. Sails larger than this are probably (hree or more years old. Another question concerns the diet of small sailfish. From a study of stomach contents carried out by The Marine Laboratory for the Florida Slate Board of Conservation, it has been found that a sailfish begins to eat small fish when it reaches a length of about one inch.

Prior to this it eats some crustaceans and other forms of plankton. The diet changes as the sailfish increases in size. The larger the sailfish the larger are the animals eaten. It was found that sailfish will feed on almost any fish that occurs in bait quantity. Fish comprise a large portion (80) of food of sailfish.

The remainder is made up of ccphalopods (octopods and squids). The family Scrombri-dae (mackerel and tuna) represent the majority of (he food fish. Second in importance is the family Carangidae (jacks). It was interesting to note that mullet (Mugilidae) which are believed to be the best sailfish bait, represented a very minor ffaction of the sailfish's diet. A QUESTION FREQUENTLY sent in to the UM Marine Laboratory concerns the occurrence of small sailfish.

Anglers and charter boat captains wonder why sails of three to four feet, which are caught in large numbers in November and December, disappear in January. According to Oil Voss of The Marine Laboratory, these sails are the product of the previous summers spawning. The young sailfish are carried northward by the Gulf Stream until (hey reach a size large enough (3 to 4 inches) to permit them to swim freely. Many small sailfish (15 inches) are caught in the nets of fishermen off the Carolina coast. The sailfish turn southward when (he cold northerlies occur and on (heir arrival there is a "run" of small sails, after which they disperse and are then only occasionally caught unlil (hey mature.

Growth in the first year is very rapid and the average sailfish will probably attain a length of six feet. After the first year, growth slows down with the fish eventually reaching a length of seven to seven and one half feel in the See our d'nploy mud let ul demonstrate thit ncepti'onof croft or you. He hangs a gas lantern close to the water at night and lures a band of tiny pilochers.

Then wiih either pilchers or small live shrimp caught in a dipnet, he entices the silvery, platter-shaped moonfish which flicker and turn at the edge of the lantern's glow. Here, when December cold spells chill the bay, schools of tarpon begin to play in a warm outflow from power company condensers. You may get them to hit on a live shrimp riding about four feet deep under a cork. But the surest bait is a live shiner, fresh caught on a hair hook and thread along the bayshorc.
