munity Ministers have been en couraged by the support the children give the work in the different church es In ebruary 1938 there was or ganized the Iredell county branch of the Children Bible Mission and the work was then introduced in this county by visi ting schools of the county and presenting the plans in each school The county superintend ent Mr Ward Guy and his office force the principals in each of the schools and the teachers have all giv en wonderful cooperation and help in establishing this work in the county In every school the committees from the Bible Mission were cordially received and assisted in pre senting the plan to the children and in carrying out the work Last year a large number of children in Iredell county were given Bibles for mem orizing the 200 verses required and 24 children spent a week at camp This year Iredell children have re ceived 150 Bibles and 93 children are ready for camp which opens June 2 at Mountain The Bibles are distributed but it is now necessary to secure an addi tional' amount of $300 so that each child who has done the required work may receive the promised reward of a week in camp to which each of these boys and girls look forward with eager anticipation The Bible Mission has no endownment but depends altogeth er on free will offerings received from Christian friends who are in terested in the children of the South land receiving the Word of God and growing up to be Christian citizens instead of drifting into lives of crime and shame An appeal is made to peo ple of the town and community to contribute to this very May Informed Ger man sources said today King Leopold of tho Belgians whose army has sur rendered to Germany on his order would bo permitted to continue func tioning as king in some form or other if Germany is victorious in the war Adolf Hitler was reported foundly stirred" both by the soldierly attitude ot umpout sticking with his troops through the fighting and by his decision to surrender when in the German view further resistance was purposeless Speculation was that the lemish part of Belgium would be joined to Holland and Leopold would be given this new kingdom to rule Holland's house of Orange in the German view is out for good Wil helmina herself being held responsi ble by having fled her country Leopold has been assigned a castle presumably in the Ardennes orests He probably will be asked to form a civil government with which the Ger man government can cooperate DR RAYNAL TALKS ON WAR SITUATION I (Continued rom Page One) few days has been disappointed not only that the democracies have not been equal to the test he has been made miserable by the thought that absolutely everything men revere is threatened today wonder if any of us realize how serious how tre mendous this thing is" said Dr Raynal means world revolution the turning upside down of the world that we have It means he added that the conception of liberty the ideals of decency all the ideals the great and rich inheritance of man kind through all the ages down to the present are threatened Men need to be awakened to the dangers of this thing he thinks Per haps the two greatest nuisances of the receiving no Bible training This statement impressed spine of those who heard it with their responsibility to do something for these children After much prayer an organization called The Bible Mission Inc was formed and is operating with head quarters in St Petersburg lorida The Bible ission was organized for the purpose of giving the Word of God to rural boys and girls and the plan decided upon was Bible memory work in the rural pub lic schools It is now being carried on in seven Southern states The children are given prizes for memorizing selected portions of Scripture or memorizing 200 verses each child receives a Bible and for 300 verses a week at a Christian camp is given to each child It costs $5 per child for this week at camp and the expenses are taken care of by friends interested in the Bible Mission These camps are under Christian influence and control and a Christian counsellor is provided for every seven children The teaching gives the children a definite know ledge of the plan of salvation and practically all of them go back into their homes to live the facts that they have learned at camp The motive anil object of this work is to encourage the children to designate'd sev eral years ago of North Carolina died at 5 yes terday afternoon at a Charlotte hos pital after illness of some time Mr Douglass was bom August 4 1875 in Troy He attended Wake or est college went into the Presbyte rian ministry and had served pastor ates in numerous North Carolina towns He had served irst church here for eight years uneral service will be held at irst church here at 2 Thurs day afternoon ruinates But all that has changed Some thing has happened to our County Home something that has made it more livable and peaceful for those unfortunates who for one reason or another came to the evening of life without any security and for those who continue to come At a total cost of approximately 615000 in A projects in which the county was required to con tribute $8000 this property has been improved far beyond that figure in value as measured by any yardstick one wishes to use improvements that are permanent in nature and which should have been undertaken long ago to remedy faults long neglected Until this work was started well meaning officials had no idea of the urgency of the need faulty wiring not ted floors fire hazards all a threat to county property to say nothing of the unsanitary conditions that were found to exist These improvements include a new reservoir for the storage of water against fire new fire hose and con nections tin all buildings new floors where needed rooms re plastefed windows and doors screened arid most of the building treated to a new coat of paint In short the poorest of our poor are living in quarters made com fortable for them and at a minimum expense that also serves to preserve the value of county property It has taken much time and planning to bring this about without burdening the county and the board of commis sioners and County Manager Mills are tu be commended for their vision and interest Nor should the credit "stop there One cannot set foot upon the premises without sensing the fact that this property is under good management Mr and Mrs Sherrill are in charge and both are competent en ergetic and above all interested in their work and sympathetic and pa tient under what obviously are most trying conditions at times As probably every grand juror who visited the home recently will agree the room life of the inmates has been made as pleasant as possible under the supervision of Mrs Sher rill and all of them seem to appreci ate what is being done for them And there are some interesting people among tnem wmte ana colored Mrs Emmie Gaither blind been there tor twenty four years Her library of Braille system books makes that comfortable corner room which she has occupied since June1916 a glorious place for her even in affliction Amanda Holland in the colored ward has been at the home for twen ty years and she along with the oth er colored inmates are co operating in keeping their rooms clean and liv able 1 The dining rooms the kitchens and stock rooms are clean and sanitary and the whole place resembles more the home of a prosperous country squire than a If and when we qualify we bid to go there The County Home arm embraces 225 acres A trip through the fields will convince that Mr Sherrill is a good farmer and his wife is a home manager The soil has been built to a high state of production and the income helps to make the home self supporting A herd of thirteen Jerseys provide milk for the home 100 hens and right now 400 broilers are adding to the menu 18 hogs and 11 pigs are headed for the meat house where al ready rows of hams shoulders and sides are ready for the kitchen But betting you go there and get away without having a look a bunch of as fine young mules as find in a journey Mr Sherrill is proud of those mules and he has a right to be just as he has a right to be proud of the splendid management of the County Home that he and his wife are providing Really you are cheating yourself out of something if you fail to visit the County Home You will be there is nothing to worry about Dr Raynal can nut up with tho people who are excited a great deal better than he can with the oth er type His own feeling is that peo ple need to be excited aroused to the point where they realize the need of using all calm judgment balance and sanity to meet this situation As to participation in the present conflict Dr Raynal reminded his audience that this nation is al ready in it to the extent of billions in money and will le in it vastly more when It gets into general military training or when factories close rind the American standard of living goes down America participated in the last world war to the world safe for democracy" Dr 'Raynal remind ed his audience that democracy never has been made safe by one fight that it has to he saved in every generation or the people of the democracies have to have the sense that the forefath ers of the American nation they must be willing to accept responsibili ties to make sacrifices in order to preserve democracy The United States however refused tel enter the World Court or the League of Na tions because such a course might interfere with two great contributions to the business and baseball It would have cost tho country only a few million then in contrast to the billions that are going to have to lie spent on account of the present situation i As to tho outcome of the present conflict Dr Raynal finds hope in the Word of God Tho testimony of the Bible is that it will end in failure for Germany for that Rook teaches that AMOUS QUALITY Cannon Sheets ine Muslin Strictly first Size 72 99 and 81
