THE MIAMI NEWS, Monday, February 2, 1959 30 your best 1 'f urns uut. I i GRACEFVLLY WVRS EASY TO READ Jj (i i t5 ut Not Red 1 V. Vtv LISTINGS X- By ARTHUR GRACE Television Writer of The Miami Newa The George Burns Show (Tuesdays at 9 p.m.) will expire April 14th, and I think it regretful. Burns' series was not great, but it was pleasing, reasonably amusing and fairly entertaining. George is a good, solid comedian.

KARL MALDEN Among Stan In Film Director Woes (This solution would greatly benefit a number of other shows.) BUDDY BOY "The Buddy Bregman Show," a new series on NBC (Channel 7) Sundays at 7:30 p.m., is a direct steal of ABC's "Dick Clark Show." The main differ-ence is in the hosts. While Clark Is a reasonably ultiply, But I- ill A (rtiw if 1 1 rando's Calm (This is the second three articles on Marlon Brando, who is directing his first motion picture as well as starring in it.) Ey JOE HYAMS Miami News Kperlal Writer HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 2 Marlon Brando was directing actors Sam Gilman and Ben Johnson in a scene for the Western, "One-Eyed Jacks." After the first run through he 6houted to Johnson, "Stop mumbling; I can't hear you." The cast and crew including Brando burst Into laughter. There was something funny indeed about the famous mumbler telling another actor to speak up. But there's nothing humorous about Marlon Brando as a di One point that must be made about his show Is that it always was in good taste; it had none of the constant low -level, double entendre humor of the "Red Skelton Show." It is a sad commentary, I think, that Skelton is a howling sue-cess while Burns has failed.

Present plans, while not definite, call for the Burns show to be replaced by "The Califor-nians," a fourth-rate adventure series now seen on Tuesday nights at 10. "The Californians." in turn, will be replaced by a dramatic anthology that is guaranteed to be a cliche factory. And NBC which used to present more worthwhile entertainment than any of the networks also plans to move "Treasure Hunt" Into a nighttime slot. This series is bad enough in the daytime, without foisting It on the public at night. The way things are going I'm going to start missing quiz shows.

Almost. SO LONG, JOHN John Mclntyre, elderly co-hero of ABC's "Naked City" (Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m.) has decided he wants to quit the series. How will the producers handle this dilemma? It's simple. Sometime In March, Mr. Mclntyre will be blown to bits.

BEN JOHNSON Ile'i Told 'Slop The announcement was not a surprise to any of his friends who contend that directing has always been Brando's ultimata goal. COSTS MOUNTING By the time the picture actually began in early December, a million and a half dollars had been invested in it and not a foot of film had been shot.

The stars, in addition to Brando, are Karl Maiden, Katy Jurado, Gilman and Johnson and Pina Pclliccr, an unknown Mexican actress discovered by Brando. At the start of shooting, Brando had a 170-page script hut no ending which means the picture will run over four hours in length. With an expensive location, VistaVision and color, the picture has been budgeted at around four million dollars a million dollars more than originally planned. To make a profit, the film will have to gross around $9, 000.000. The film is now behind schedule, and the original two-month schedule has been lengthened to three-and-a-half months.

But Brando, the director-actor, isn't worried or hurried. He's merely impatient to be on with the job. He's a real "do-it-yourself" director. WORKS WITH CAST On a day I visited the set, he was helping to age clothes, sitting in on makeup conferences, and assisting workmen move bricks by hand from a location site. All this, and directing too.

I watched him for a full day, and if the picture is as entertaining to see as he is, it's bound to be a success. 5 TONIGHT AT 7:00 mm PAdNC I "SURVEYOR" II Sponsored by MARY CARTER 2 PAINT FACTORIES 2 Diiiiiiiiiiiiniiiia 1. He portrays an English gen-eleman who catches Gia Scala picking: his Innocuous figure, Bregman is actively annoying. He has an inane smile and his Idea of wit is Illustrated by the following commentary: "And that number was called And it looks like a hitnik." His audience, comprised entirely of teenagers, tittered nervously. Eddie Fisher, who won Elizabeth Taylor this season at the expense of his sponsor was a guest on the show. He didn't help at all, but I doubt that anyone could.

If it proves salable and it may be too good to sell television viewers are in for a rare treat next fall. Screen Gems Is making a pilot film titled "The Secret Life of James Thurbcr." I can't imagine anything more appealing than a scries based on the writings of Mr. Thurbcr. I am assuming, of course, that Screen Gems is not going to place Walter Mitty and other Thurber protagonists hi Dodge City. WITH THIS COUPON BBTj Good Mon.

He has thrown himself into his first venture as director-actor, with the same intensity he applies to acting roles. As an actor, he rarely settles for anything less than what he terms perfection in his scripts.

He cares little for cost and convenience. If he feels something should be done a certain way, he will hold out and fight for it. UNORTHODOX METHODS Brando, the director, is equally unorthodox and dedicated to the job at hand. He first announced plans to make a Western for his own company Pcn-ncbaker Productions with Paramount financing in September, 1035. Since then, four writers have worked on the script with him; two books were bought, one for the title and the other for a plot twist; three starting dates were announced and postpon ed; director Stanley Kubrick who had been hired by the Brando company was paid off two weeks before the scheduled starting date and Brando declared he would take over.
