SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1939 PAGE FOUK THE MIAMI DAILY NEWS Pen Women's First Event To Be At Biltmore Friday Roneys Give Trees And Piano Go-By; Their Home Built Around Elephants By MARTHA LCMMTS Society Editor) You've heard of houses built around trees and pianos, with architectural details arranged to accommodate "concert grands" or a patio placed in just the right position to save some favorite tree from destruction. But did you ever hear of a house constructed around elephants? I'll bet you never did, and yet this very thing happened when Mr. and Mrs. N. B.

T. Roney built their beautiful home at 5640 Collins Miami Beach. m. ZETA TAU ALPHA sorority meeting with Miss Mary Lou Walker, 111 Salamanca ave, Coral Gables, 8 p.m. A. you see in circuses, ivo lnaeea they are of all kinds, some of which you could never see, even in your wildest dreams, and belong in a neatly compiled and carefully assorted collection, belonging to the Roneys daughter, Miss Betty Roney. Her interset started about 12 years ago when a friend gave her a chain bracelet, on which dangled three elephants.

Since then she has amassed such a quantity that finding a suitable place for them -became a serious problem which could be solved in no other way than by the construction of a special shelved room where they could stand comfortably in neat rows, on display to best advantage. As you walk into the room, which connects with Miss Roney's boudoir and serves as her dressing room, you are confronted with elephants of all varieties stuffed, spotted, checked and striped. There are elephants of ivory, pottery, ebony, wood, iron, rose quartz, china and goodness knows what else. Some are large, some small; some stand sedately on pedestals while others cavort and dance around on their hind legs. One amusing little plush creature vfnds up and dances while he waves the American flag with his trunk; another is balaaced precariously on two legs on an ivopy ball, a parasol held in his trunk aiding him in keeping his balance.

According to Miss Roney the value of the beast has no particular significance to her, so long as it is an elephant and she likes it. For this reason she has given no thought to this in their arrangement. A handsome imported Venetian blown glass elephant often finds himself neighbor to an iron bank mammoth. Elephants even cover the walls. ft.vv.! iitt ilfnUMi MM IIIIWIMWMiiMlllMH MM iJftHBIIIIIIili III IMIIIII i iTll'll II III i II MONDAY, NOV.
