He died on the eve on starting work.

Strip-Teaser Gypsy Rose Lee and Fan-Dancer Sally Rand had all the publicity trimmings that go with the launching of a film career. But Gypsy Louise Hovick made a couple of pictures, and boom! oblivion. Sally Rand ditto ditto. The keynote of Doris Nolan's smash buildup at Universal was her Bex appeal. She is now Hollywood's forgotten Ann Sheridan.

And remember Francis X. Shields? He had lots of publicity at Goldwyn's and what else? Practically nothing. But to return to Miss Grable. Why the wide gap between her ballyhoo and her screen achievements? Betty's first claim to publicity was under the title, "The First Goldwyn Girl." She was signed by the producer when she was a mere 13-year-old as decorative background for Eddie Cantor in "Whoopee." Betty was under contract to Goldwyn one year, her youthful ness and blonde good looks grabbing her plenty of magazine and newspaper space. Then RKO signed her for the Wheeler and Woolsey comedy, "Hold 'Em, Jail." Again a lot of publicity but the studio did not take up her option.

In May, 1937, Paramount signed her up, and the still hopeful blonde was told, "We are going to make a big star of you." "I'll do anything you say," replied Betty breathlessly. And so began her biggest and most futile publicity campaign. The Grable figure was photographed from every conceivable angle. "The most perfect torso in the world," was the modest label attached to the myriads of photographs sent to susceptible editors the length and breadth of the world. After a couple of years of this, Betty's mother decided that something must be done apart from picture posing.

A kind-hearted executive at the studio suggested, "Why not send her to the studio dramatic school, and then we can find out if she can act?" This seemed an excellent idea, so the $600-a-week publicity actress went to school with the $50-a-week studio stock players. But she had barely mastered her first lesson when an angry agent called Paramount and spluttered: "What do you mean by sending my client to school? Do you want to ruin her? How can I sell her to other studios if she is still going to dramatic school?" Then and there Betty was removed from contamination with dramatic instruction. There were still a few months left on her contract, and Paramount decided to centralize all the leg publicity given Betty by polishing her off in a epic titled. "Million-Dollar Legs," and, for extra measure, gave Husband Jackie Coogan a small role, too.
