That, in a nutshell, tells the story of the class A Iowa boys high school state basketball finals played in the Des Moines Veteran's auditorium Monday evening. Sioux Center, playing In their first championship game and out to end their season with a 29-0 record, led during all but 15 seconds of the first half, went Into Intermission on the long end of a 29-20 score, fell behind. 38 to 34, after three quarters and didn't take the lead again until Vermeer's game- ending bucket. The large crowd, for the most part cheering for the underdog Sioux Center team, nearly went wild as the game ended.

Seconds later Vermeer elect- rifled the crowd with his swisher. Take Early Lead Davenport led only once during the first half. That was at 6 to 5 with 2:50 left in the first quarter.

The Indians were back in control, 12 to 10, at the quarter stop and with their defense working perfectly increased the margin to 2920 at halftimc. Then the roof fell In as Daven- post dominated play in the third quarter with an IB-point attack while Sioux Center could get only 5. The spree gave Davenport a 38-34 margin entering the final period. Sioux Center was never behind by more than three points the final stania but couldn't take the advantage again until the last second. Most of them were addressed to the Sioux Center basketball team or Coach Paul Muyskens and received Monday before playing Davenport. Telegrams wer sent from all over Northwest Iowa and some from out of state.

Muyskens had at one time told the members of the team that if they would win the trophy he would be willing to pull il home in a wagon. Tuesday he gol his chance, allhoiigh Ihc Icain members let him off with only a "short haul." Don DC Gooyer, at right, made the coaster wagon presentation speech at a big pep rally in Ihe school audilorium.

Indians Win Over Clarion In State Semi-finals, 64 to 54 Lead 28-27 at Half After Trailing by 11 Sioux Center's lalenlcd high school Indians erupted from an 11- point deficit in the second quarter of Iheir slate semi-final round game with Clarion Saturday evening in Ihe Des Moines Velerans audilorium, Ihcn look a 28-27 halftime advantage and went on lo win in Ihe second half, 64 lo 54. The Indians look an early lead on Leon Schimmel's shot from be. hind Ihc free Ihrow line but, Clarion, playing in Iheir firsl slate tournament, forged ahead, 5 lo 2, before Jim Vermeer and Wilbur Sandbultc hit from close quarters to again put Ihe local tribe out front, G-5. Dan Slober hit a follow shot for Clarion but Vcrmcer retaliated wilh a lay-up and a 10-foot jumper for a 10-7 edge with 4:15 left in the quarter.

Clarion Hot, Indians Cold The next six minuutes and 23 seconds were heclic ones fur Sioux Center as Clarion warmed up to challenge while Indians turned ice cold. The Clarion Cow- 1 shot full short and Becrnink got Ihe ball and put il through Ihe ncl as Ihc half ended. Take Command Sioux Center appeared lo he on its way as Sniidbullc and Vcrmcer found the range early in Ihc third quarter and spread Ihc gap lo five points. But Clarion had other ideas and fought back for a 35-34 lead midway in Ihe quarlcr. The Cowboys were out front again, 40-30, with 1:52 left in Ihc Ihird period bill Hcernink hit a pair of fielders and the Indians never trailed again.

Playing heads up ball, the Indians protected a slim early fourth quarter advantage with a semi-stall and broke in for several lay-ups to increase the final margin. Bccrnink led all scorers wilh IB points (14 Ihc second half) fol- owed closely by Sanilbulle wilh 17, Vermeer wilh 13 and Schimmcl with 12. Clarion also had balanced scor- ng wilh Tom Purccll leading his team with 10. Throe olhers also scored in double figures. Vermeer also turned in a bcauli.

Thai was an important minute plus for the Indians, however, as hey scored cighl more points six on lay-ups by Snndbiiltc and two on a Rccrnink follow shot as Ihe half ended. Sandbullc got a rebound lay-up wilh 1:02 left, hit on a "sleeper" with 37 seconds left in the half, then inlcrceplcd the ball and drove in for a lay-up with six seconds remaining.

Sioux Center's greatest basket ball season came lo an end Monday nlghl when they defeated Davenport, 50 to 49, In Ihe stale toiirna mcnt finals at DCS Molncs. Coach Paul Muyskens told a pep ni crowd at Ihc local audilorium last week Thursday morning that Ibis year's loam was Ihc best in Ihc school's history. Thai was a big mouthful when you consider sonu 1 of the excellent Icains Sioux On- Icr has put out bill (lie boys proved Muyskens to be correct when they won the stale class A championship. The decision to postpone the stale tourney semi-finals a day and the finals 2 days was a disappoint- mcnt to many fans but a happy decision lo many others. Harold Kacmingk, five pep club girls and I lefl for Des Moines in ICacmlngk's car at 9 a.m.

Friday with the assurance the games would go on as scheduled. We were 100 miles oul before being notified of the posl- poneincnl on Ihc radio. The girls, who wouldn't hear of turning back, had to adjust themselves so their money could last four days inslcai: of Ihc planned Iwo. They adjusted rapidly, however, and spent a Iota of only 25 cents (he firsl lime we stopped for lunch. The postponement, caused by bad wcalhcr condilions, allowed many Sioux Ccnlci- fans to sec the Saturday night semi-finals In person instead of on TV.

Some loca fans had little difficulty gelling lo DCS Moines Friday bul others, lak ing differenl roads, ran inlo more trouble than they had bargained for. We were among Ihe fortunate ones. While Ihc postponement may fiave cut down on the tolal allcnd- ancc for Ihc tournament, we feel certain that more Sioux Center 'nns saw Ihc games than would lave been possible otherwise. Monday night's turn-out of local fans THisl certainly have been a big cn- oiiragcmcnl lo the boys. We were lumping into Sioux Center people ill over Des Moines over the weekend and Monday.

Some Sioux Center fans came from quile a distance loo. Vcrmcer, a teacher at Las Vegas, Nevada, made the 15()U-mile Irip jusl lo sec her "kid brother" Jim play. If she'd scon no more lhan Ihc lasl few seconds of the game with Davenport Monday night, she'd probably felt the Irip was justified. Coach Muyskens The man who guided the Sioux Center Warriors to Iheir first stall' championship Ihi.s wci'li, nml who possibly is candidate for Hie "hiHli school coach of (he year" award. When Sioux Center beat Clarion Saturday night it was the sixth straight loss against a Sioux Center team for Coach Lou Collier.

The first five losses for Collier came when he was head man at Aurclia. When Mrs. Harold Bccrnink called to Darrcll Hcernink at Holland, immediately following Sioux Center-Davenport game Monday evening, Darrcll already Calumet Wins Top Spot in Field Calumet flcft'iiti'd Lowden. 77 to 50, Monday evening in Hi' 1 class Iowa high school stale basketball finals at DCS Molncs. The win, coupled with Sioux Collier's win over Davenport in the A finals, made a clean sweep for Vorlhwcst Iowa.
