Holland, who carries the endorsement of the great majority of Florida's daily newspapers, is the favorite. The winner of the Holland-Pepper battle takes on Republican Le-land Hyzer, a Miami lawyer, in November. Florida's Democratic nomination has been tantamount to election, but Republicans have been showing increasing strength at the Dolls.

Sen. Spessard Holland and Claude Pepper, poles apart in their political philosophies, beat busy paths through the vote-rich Miami area today on the eve of Florida's Democratic primary. Dade County, with almost a fourth of the state's 1,359,610 registered Democratic voters, is the big plum in the U.S. Senates battle. Both candidates are counting heavily on Dade in their hopes for victory.

Results of the election will be watched closely over the nation for clues to trends in Southern thinking. The campaign has been a siz-zler. Hottes twords have been spoken over the issues of race, Russia and labor. Holland has accused Pepper of deserting the thinking of the South on racial matters, being soft toward the Soviet Union and drawing the backing of big labor. Pepper has replied with charges that Holland has been trying to stir up hate on the race issue, waging a McCarthy-type campaign on the communism issue and of working against the interests of the laboring man.

Pinellas County Sheriff Don Genung said he would file the charge as soon as possible against 32-year-old Lynn Dunning of Mad ison, Wis. Dunning said he met Tomlinson in a Tampa bar and that the two of them had driven to another bar on St. Petersburg Beach in Tom-linson's car. On the way back to Tampa, the statement said, the two argued and Dunning pulled out a pistol which he said acci-dently discharged, wounding Tomlinson. Vandiver appealed for the "understanding and good will" of the Japanese and said he hoped the case could be resolved with "equity and justice." Lt.
