Lincoln Journal Star A Thursday. July 27, 2006 I 1 BUSINESS TierOne's second-quarter earnings break record billion, an increase of $100.1 million, or 3. 1 percent, over Dec 3 1 TierOne Bank says it is the largest publicly traded financial institution headquartered in Nebraska and the largest financial institution headquartered in Lincoln. Benchmark update In TierOne's March 31 quarterly report, the holding company disclosed that the bank had lent money to one of Omaha's largest residential construction builders, which sought Chapter 1 1 bankruptcy relief after the death of its president. That was Benchmark Homes and its owner, John "Jack" Czerwins-kL TierOne said Wednesday it had $8.1 million in loans to the builder, of which $6.8 million were to entities seeking Chapter 1 1 relief.

Included in the Chapter 1 1 -related loans were 27 residential homes and a 121-lot residential land development loan totaling $1.8 million, the bank said. Loans of $1.3 million to Czerwinski and his widow were not under the protection of the bankruptcy court and were secured by either their personal residence or four completed model homes, Northwest working on computer glitch TierOne said. In the three months ended June 30, the bank said it was paid in full on loans for the sale of three residential and two model homes, the land associated with the 1 .8 million development project also was sold, and the bank's loan was paid in full in early July 2006, TierOne said. Two residential homes, one model home and the builder's personal residence are under contract to be sold, the bank said. TierOne said it thinks the remaining portfolio of loans in this relationship is adequately secured.

expected to operate full schedules on Wednesday, Ebenhoch said. Northwest would not allow unaccompanied minors on flights scheduled before 1 p.m., he said. The problem began Tuesday afternoon and was centered in a computer system that enables communication between the Worldspan global distribution system and some Northwest airport computer systems, Northwest said. Northwest was encouraging customers to check in and obtain their boarding passes over the Internet and check their flight status online. The airline issued a waiver allowing customers to change their travel plans without penalty.

Customers with confirmed tickets for travel scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday may reschedule their travel to begin on or before Aug. 1 without penalty or administrative fees. By staff and wire reports Lincoln Airport Executive Director John Wood said Northwest Air-link arrivals and departures mostly have been running on time as Northwest Airlines continued to work through a computer glitch that caused the delay of nearly 300 flights Tuesday. Five of the six flight arrivals Tuesday were on time, as were all departures, Wood said. A flight from Detroit, scheduled to land in Lincoln at 4:51 p.m., didn't get in until 5:40, Wood said.

Through mid-afternoon Wednesday, he said, all Northwest Airlink flights had been on time. Northwest spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch said Wednesday the airline's information technology department was making progress on fixing the airline's computer system. In the meantime, backup systems were being used. Business Continued from Page 10A M.I.S. Engineering's ability to perform multiple steps during product development helps the client get its product to market cheaper, and more importantly, faster, Lewis said.

It's important to M.I.S. Engineering, Lewis said, to make capital investments that help the company stay on the cutting edge. He said that investment is made every year. Recently, he said, the company spent six figures on a Multitroruks component-placement machine, a tunnel oven and a stencil printer. All of those machines are used in finishing circuit boards.

The stencil printer is used to set up the design for the boards to illustrate where components will go on the boards. In the stencil printer, liquid solder is applied. Next, the Multitroniks is used to populate the board with components, then the populated boards are run through the tunnel oven, which melts the solder to keep the components in place. Quality checks are included in the process, Lewis said. A small sideline of the business is repair of industrial equipment, like fixing an electric device that somehow got water spilled on or in it.

Overseas, especially in China, production is undercutting the prices many older manufacturers were used to dealing with, Lewis said. For example, some M.I.S. Engineering products are sourced from China, rather than made here. "I can buy products from China at my raw-material price," he said. Lincoln has infrastructure and support in place to satisfy a company like his, Lewis said.

However, he said, the city and state should do more to promote relationships among local businesses. A lot of customers, he said, found M.I.S. Engineering only after months of searching for a board vendor. One customer that likes the way M.I.S. Engineering does business is Lester Electrical, which buys a control board for a water distiller from the company.

"They're very easy to get along with," Lester Electrical President James Carrier said. "They go out of their way to do things for you." The future, Lewis said, could see the company hiring more employees with degrees to meet its design and prototyping needs. Production manager John Emanuel has been with the company for 1 0 years. He likes his job because he gets to perform a variety of tasks, see what's new in electronics before others do and enjoy the knowledge that many of the things he works on end up with consumers. "You always feel a little proud about making something somebody's he said.
