Progress' Unstemmable Steam Roller Symbolized in Elia Kazan Masterpiece By CAROL McMURTRY Globe-Times Amusements Editor The changes that were wrought in the American way of life during the mid thirties were felt keenly across the entire conti nent, but perhaps no one single sector realized the impact of progress more deeply than the Tennessee Valley. Into this rolling, backward section '-of the United States came the Tennessee Valley Authority, the governmental agency em powered to build the Tennessee Valley Dam and harness the vast power of the Tennessee River to brinf an end to the ferocious waste, death and destruction unleashed almost yearly by the mighty river. By the end of the 30s, 16 dams had been completed on Tennessee River. The savage and wild river that had been man's kffler was now man's servant. Progress had entered the impoverished region the river that had kept man a slave to poverty and ignorance had been tamed.

The future was bright; progress had triumphed. But, to build, there is almost an inevitable necessity to des troy, a simple, half forgotten but inexorable fact which has been utilized to a fine degree by Eiiz Kazan in Ills powerful "The Wild River," Producer director Kazan his latest film masterpiece beartbreakiiig newsreels of the; uncontrolled Tennessee River on; the rampage, and quickly eslab-i lisbes the -case-for TVA.
