With the 14th-ranked Vols leading only 10-0 after a lethargic first half, Morgan brought the crowd of 66,356 to its feet in the third quarter with touchdown grabs of 23 and 52 yards. Hollowav threw the first and Miami Redskins Hustle By Toledo OXFORD. Ohio AP) Sophomore quarterback Steve Smith, making his first start, scrambled for 115 yards to lead unbeaten and 16th-ranked Miami of Ohio to a 16-0 MidAmerican Conference football victory over Toledo Saturday. It was Miami's seventh straight victory and the best start since when Ara Par-seghian coached the Redskins to a 9-0 record. The shutout "was Toledo's first over a MidAmerican foe in 28 games.

Smith, who earned the starting job after rushing for 101 yards against Bowling Green last week, marched the Redskins 87 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. Bob Hitchens capped the drive with a one-yard run for the only score of the first half. Dave Draugt added field goals of 21, 22 and 24 yards in the second half. It was Miami's first victory over Toledo since 1968 and the first shutout over the Rockets since 1955. Toledo, -4, went to the air early behind quarterback Gene Swick and amassed 111 yards to Miami's 19 in the first half.

But the Redskins negated that with a fierce rush which resulted in 12 sacks. The victory tied Miami with Kent State at 2-0 for the MAC lead. Toledo dropped to 1-2. Here are some facts and figures you can use to win a cup of coffee or bore your friends into submission. The various classifications and their numerical limits are: Class students and above; Class 3A- students; Class 2A- 235-519 students; Class A-125-234 students; and Class B- below 125 students.

Last year's figures were: Class up: Class Class 2A- 230-499; Class A-120-229; and Class B-below 120. Next fall there will be 234 Class 4A football teams, 145 in Class 3A, 308 in Class 2A, 208 in Class A and 109 in Class B. In addition, there will be 30 teams playing eight-men football and 63 six-man teams. That's a total of 997 schools playing Texas high school football. In 1974, all schools may play their first game on Sept.

5 and the last playing date prior to playoffs will be Nov. 16. PERMIAN ASSISTANT Gene McCanlies has a superstition that I've mentioned several times. Seems the longtime Mojo coach thinks it is lucky to find a coin and put it in his shoe. One season, while Leldon Hensley and Dean Rudd labored at PHS with McCanlies, they salted the area with pennies, nickels and the like and McCanlies found so many coins he seemed to grow taller.

His superstition won't allow him to remove the coins from the shoe so he ended the season with a metallic inner sole in both shoes. Now, he's suffered a real setback. They've paved his happy hunting ground, the once rock strewn, sandy plan between the dressing room and the Mojo workout field. "When people drop money now, they hear it hit and pick it up," snorted a worried McCanlies Thursday before Permian had its final workout before the Cooper game. "I just can't find coins any more." SHORT SNORTS Pop Warne Football League tames play their last games, of the season Saturday Texas aide Spike Dykes on Joe Bizzell, "He's too small to play." Here ole Spike adds, "Har! Har! Freshman quarterback Chris Vacarella, who ran 17 times for 43 yards, scored the touchdown, going in from the seven. Auburn's defense held Houston to 241 yards on the ground and 69 in passing, below the Cougars' average of more than 448 yards per game. The Vols and Frogs exchanged punts three times in the first period before Holloway directed a 70-yard march in four plays for a touchdown, dumping a two-yard pass to West in the end zone after faking a line plunge. Townsend's field goal, his sixth of the season, came after safety Eddie Brown had returned a TCU kick 18 yards to the Frogs' 22. The Texans bottled up Tennessee's rushing attack rather effectively, limiting the Vols to 192 yards on 35 carries.

Most of the yardage came late in the game with the visitors obviously tired. Holloway and Valbuena collectively completed 12 of 27 passes for a total of 245 yards. Tailback Mike Luttrell was the Frogs' leading rusher, netting 57 yards on 16 carries. His longest run was 21 yards in the first period. Taking off? (AP)-Sophomore tailback Mitzi Jackson, recovering from a knee injury which had kept him on the bench for most oi the season, gained 112 yards rushing Saturday and led Auburn to a 7-0 upset football victory over the previously undefeated Cougars. It was the first time Houston had been shut out in 89 games. Jackson, who carried the ball 21 times, combined with a stingy Auburn 1 defense which stifled 12th-ranked Houston's vaunted1 ground game and stopped the Cougars three times inside line. Houston almost tied the game with two minutes remaining, driving for a first down on the Auburn 12. But David Langner broke up a fourth-down pass on the four and the Cougars had to give up the ball.

Rice also has lost two players who were expected to return this year.
