1 MONDAY, DKCEMBm 12, 1966 gal compressors slightly above atmospheric pressure and is discharged at 1,233 pounds per square inch. The final stage of compressor to the 4,000 pounds per square Inch injection pressure is handled by existing reciprocating machines. P. E. Fletcher, district manager said the inert flue gas, injected in place of natural gas to maintain reservoir not only will Increase ultimate yield, but also will release natural gas for consumer use.

'--f "Eliminating the purchase of natural gas makes the plant's operation less expensive and will result in increased oil re-' covery through an extension of the economic limit." The generator system supplies in excess of 54 million cubic feet of inert gas per day for injection along with 28,000 amounts toxabout 14 cents, per cubic footX The process saves hydrocarbon gas, increases return from the multipay reservoirs and It is cheaper to operate. Flue gas is generated by burning natural gas which creates a 10-fold increase' in volume. Combustion facilities include four boilers with a combined capacity of 300,000 pounds of steam per hour. One brake horsepower of steam energy. The gas is to be pumped into mainly the Devonian and parts of the Connell formations in the south part of the field.

There is no storage. At present there is about 2 million cubic feet of excess gas burned daily. The company has 97 producing wells in the field and has been using the injection process since 1949. During this time there has been an estimated 250 billion cubic feet of gas accumulated. The use of flue gas should return this gas to the company for commercial use.

By CARL DINGLER -V I Americas Oil Writer CRANE. Engineers who designed the new gas complex at Atlantic-Richfield Co. Black 31 Plant, 6 miles west of here are popping a few buttons off their shirts with pride. They have every right, for through their zeal and confidence they have come up with the world's largest secondary recovery flue gas generator system. However, what they are really beaming about is that they, started from scratch, using their originality and individuality to come up with the multi million dollar (more than three) design and they did it without a pilot project or any pattern to go by.

It wasn't all roses, however, for until recently the engineers have had many problems to contend with such as centrifugal compressor train, instrumentation and the flue gas generators. "We knew it had to work and We knew we had to make it work," a much happier and relaxed engineer said last week on a tour of the plant. The plant has now operated seven weeks without a shutdown or failure and it appears well on its way to success. The plant actually is three plants in one. The' flue gas plant is erected on an 8-acre plot just south of the existing Block 31 gas processing plant.

Every detail has been planned with the plant being self sustaining. It even produces its own water from itsjown condensing system and every safety precaution has been taken. If anything goes wrong the entire plant is automatically shutdown. Also, the plant expansion brought 41 new families into the community during the last three years. There are now 58 employed at the plant headed by George Caroway, formerly head of the plant at Loving-ton, N.

M. However only 10 or 12 people have been added because of the flue gas operation. And what is flue gas! As one engineer put it, "It is simply gas that goes out the flue." A flue, then, is a chimney that conveys flame and smoke to the outer air or a passageway for conducting a current of heated or foul air from one place to another. Why should anyone be happy over producing foul air and moving it from one place to another at a cost of several million dollars? The most ready answer is that it saves money in that the flue gas is being substituted for natural gas. Actually there is still some natural gas used in making the flue gas but the savings this process was, to maintain pressure on an oval trapped in anticline reservoir of gas.

The formation is more or less flat under Block 31 with the flue gas acting like a ram pushing the oil and gas out ahead of it Atlantic Richfield also inaugurated the industry's first miscible displacement pro. gram early in the life of the life of the field's Devonian formation. When oil is miscibly displaced by gas, the oil and gas are soluble in each other, so that the oil essentially is washed from the rock.) "Miscibility is obtained by injections of higher pressure gas, which is now replaced by the much cheaper flue gas. Thus as the engineers go about their job of heating and condensing (the gas is condensed 7 times during the process) and beaming at their accomplishments of being first, they also have proved that J'wildcatting" isn't really a thing' of the past after all. Engineers estimated another boiler is used solely for steam power and the other three are used to generate both steam and flue gas.

A fifth boiler is planned for installation next spring. An integral part of the flue gas injection facilities is a train of cenrifugal driven by a large steam turbine. The turbine uses 208,000 pounds of steam per hour at 600 pounds per square inch and 750 degrees and supplies 28,000 brake horsepower to the compressors. Flue gas enters the centrifu 30 years of production from the field with 60 per cent recovery. They Declined to specify how much gas and oil they will get 'from the pool or exactly how much money the new plant cost.
