It wasn't a moral victory or anything close to it Kansas Coach Terry Allen said his Jayhawks made up some ground despite getting smothered I by Nebraska 35-0 Saturday nighty "At Colorado, in the second half we might have quit," Allen said of Kansas' 42-6 loss at Boulder, Colo, f' last week. "But tonight there was not a kid that quit out there and there is hope in that factor." "Kansas has struggled, scoring just 13 points total in its last three games losses to Colorado, Nebraska and Texas Tech. The Jay-hawks didn't manage a first down Saturday until the third quarter and they still never crossed midfield. But Allen said he expected a defensive wall from Nebraska. "They (Nebraska) really showed their superiority on the defensive end of the ball," he said.

"I am proud of our team defense and of our football team. They never quit "When you come off of two straight losses and then play the way we did, you have to be proud." Kansas held Nebraska to just 32 yards of offense in the third quarter. The Jayhawks threw the Huskers for losses of 40 yards. f. on 13 carries, said the rainy weather played a factor in the game.

"It was probably a bigger factor for us than it was for them," he said. "They were pretty much going to run the ball anyway. (Quarterback) Zac Wegner was having some trouble gripping the ball and we weren't able to do some things we would have liked to." Jayhawk senior nose tackle Brett McGraw added, "It was a long night" "We seemed to prove something tonight" he said. "I am very proud of how our defense played tonight They are a good running team and we are definitely not satisfied but I am proud of our defense." RANOY HAMPTONlincotn Journal Star Freshman receiver Matt Davison (3) leads the top-ranked Nebraska football team onto the field at KU's Memorial Stadium Saturday. The Huskers trounced the Jayhawks 35-0.

The Jayhawks also held Nebraska to 35 yards of punt returns in nine chances. "Kansas played a very good game defensively and I think they took advantage of some of our problems with handing punt returns tonight" said Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne. Allen said he was impressed with the effort of his team all game. "The kids played hard and we made them (Nebraska) work for everything they got" he said. "We blocked a punt they fumbled the ball a few times but the ball bounced into their hands each time.

We didn't get the breaks we needed to get and the ball didn't bounce our way." Senior running back Eric Vann, who led the Jayhawks with 39 yards 42-0 loss to Florida State in the Kick-off Classic in August 1993. The Jayhawks, owners of the lllth-best offense (out of 112 teams) have scored just 13 points in their last three games. That's the lowest scoring stretch for three games since the end of the 1986 and beginning of the 1987 season. BKansas's offense suffered its worst all-time total offensive performance with just 48 yards. The previous worst was 53 yards against Cincinnati earlier this year.

The Jayhawks managed just first downs, tying a school-record low. The futility also included the fewest pass completions (six) and the 27 yards passing were the second-fewest in school history. Although Kansas came up with its third blocked punt of the season, the Jayhawks did not come up with a turnover for the first time this season. Kansas first year coach Terry Allen said next week's game with Iowa State will be important "It's very important for the team to rally its forces," he said.

"Iowa got its first win today. Our guys will be back and ready for next week. You can't be satisfied with a 35-0 loss. It would have been very easy for those guys to quit but they fought through it" RANDY HAMPTONUnai Jourml Star "We couldn't see," he said with a grin. "No, they were doing a lot of stunting with their linebackers and changing their fronts, and we missed some blocks.

Their defense is pretty good. "We thought we'd struggle, at times, offensively because their de fense has played well. We re pleased to get out of here with that kind of a win. Weather can be a great equaliz er." Weather may have added to the sloppiness. But it didn't keep the Huskers' offense from finishing off its painting project "We're still a good unit," Frost said.

"The fourth quarter, we started to play like we were supposed to play." Bishop's scoring run, a 1-yard sneak, made it 10-0 In the second quarter. His touchdown pass, a 1-yard toss to Darnell McDonald, closed out the scoring with 7:20 left in the game. Quarterback play has been a big factor in Kansas State's resurgence in this series. The Wildcats (6-1, S-l Big 12) had lost 22 straight to the Sooners before winning in 1993. The five-game winning streak against Oklahoma is the program's longest in a series that dates to 1908.

Kansas State's only loss was to Nebraska. Oklahoma (J-5, 1-3) played much of the game without leading rusher De'Mond Parker, who carried just four times for minus 3 yards. Parker, the Ration's third-leading rusher Nebraska's Lance Brown (1 4) mirrors the official in signaling a touchdown on Joel Makovicka's (45) 5-yard run in the first quarter Saturday. iB Ml Frost NU BY CURT McKEEVER Lincoln Journal Star i LAWRENCE, Kan. Scott Frost had a hard time admiring the work of the Nebraska offense after the Cornhuskers 35-0 victory against Kansas Saturday night "We got it done, but could've done it better," said Nebraska's senior quarterback.

"It was kind of ugly, like painting your house pink. You get it painted, but it's kind of ugly when you get it done." In a steady, driving rain, the Huskers drove for touchdowns on three of its first four possessions to end any doubt about the final outcome. But Frost admitted that he and some of his teammates were beginning to get frustrated after the Huskers went through four straight series of three-and-outs. "You have to be patient when it's like this," he said, referring to the inclement weather. "The good thing with an option offense, we have more to call on than a team that throws like Kansas." While the Jayhawks never could get their offense untracked, Frost engineered a 48-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a 14-yard run with 13:42 left in the game.

He then marched the Huskers 40 yards for the final score on their next pos- session. "There's not a whole lot of adjusting you can do by the fourth quarter. Either you've got it figured out or you don't" Nebraska offensive tackle Eric Anderson said. "We Just picked it up and wanted to make a statement that we're a pretty good team." Frost is making strong statements about his running ability. The Wood River graduate finished with 121 yards on a career-high 21 carries.

He finished off the second scoring i NORMAN, Okla. (AP) While Oklahoma may have found its future quarterback, the Sooners didn't have enough to stop the current one at Kansas State. Michael Bishop ran for one touch-down and threw for 158 yards and another score Saturday, leading the 14th-ranked Wildcats to a 26-7 win. The Sooners used three quarterbacks, Including sophomore Bran-don Daniels, a backup defensive through their first seven games. Daniels provided the few Oklahoma offensive highlights and jmay now be the next Sooner on the spot Oklahoma travels to Lincoln to play top-ranked Nebraska Saturday in a regionally televised (ABC) IKSU beat drive with a 27-yard run after faking to fullback Joel Makovicka.

"It's a night where the offensive line and the defensive line come into play more than usual," said Frost, downplaying his performance. Nebraska's lull in offense came right after two of the four banks of lights in the corners of Memorial Stadium went out with 9:36 left in the second quarter. At the time, the Huskers led 21-0. "When the power outage came, we kind of relaxed in the back of our minds," Anderson said. "But I think we got refocused." Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne kidded that his offense's struggles came about because of visibility problems.

KSU kicker Martin Gramatica had his school-record streak of consecutive field goals stopped at 13, missing a 45-yarder in the first quarter. But he was good on two othfr kicks, from 27 and 45 yards, giving him a school-record 14 this year.

Gramatica's 27-yarder gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, before Bishop's 1-yard riin made it 10-0. Daniels' run cut the lead to 10-7, but Eric Hickson scored on a 2-yard run later in the period, before Gramatica's fourth-quarter field goal and Bishop's short scoring toss to McDonald. debut Sooners despite Oklahoma QB's stron DEFENSE averaging 160.9 yards a game before Saturday, suffered a strained abdominal muscle last week, then aggravated the Injury during practice. That focused more attention on the quarterbacks, especially Daniels, who hadn't taken a snap from center since his high school days as a highly recruited option quarterback. Daniels made the move from defense last week, and Coach John Blake said Daniels would only play on offense if the other two quarterbacks starter Eric Moore and Justin Fuente were injured.

But Daniels entered the game in the second quarter, finished as the team's leading rusher with 84 yards, and scored Oklahoma's only touchdown, on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. "We were impressed with his performance today," Blake said. "We have been working with him and had planned to get him Involved today. He came through for us. He made a lot of good things happea "We have a young team that's been through a lot.

He gave us a lift today. The players rallied around him and he really gave us a boost" Blake wants to use more option football, and Daniels apparently will be a big part of that "It felt good to get In the game as a quarterback again, but we didn't win," said. "I would have NU's next foe game at 2:30 p.m. "I thought the Daniels kid was playing well," Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder said. "He is quite an athlete.

He is remarkably faster than anyone I know." In contrast to Oklahoma's quarterbacks, who have been inconsistent, Bishop made few mistakes In a steady performance that played a major part in the Wildcats' fifth consecutive victory against the Sooners. He completed 8 of 16 passes and had key third-down passes on all three Wildcat touchdown drives..
