2 NEBRASKA VS. NO. 9 WASHINGTON Are these teams really as good as their ratings? Obviously both are rated where they are based, in part, on tradition. Nebraska should note that the last two No. 2-ranked teams Florida State and then Florida lost Last year, Washington was No.

2 and Nebraska was Nos; 7 and 8 when NU rocked Husky Stadium and -r caused big breakers on Lake Washington. Nebraska has yet to field its full team and Washington i "has yet to show it can run. KECnASKA'SCSG-PLAY -OFFENSE VS. WILD WASHINGTON DEFENSE Nebraska has not had many big plays six passing and four running plays for longer than 25 yards and most of those came' in the closing minutes of the first two games. But with Bobby Mewcombe back at quarterback and DeAngelo Evans at l-back, the big breakaway potential is there.

-Washington's pass defense was woeful against Arizona State but deadly against BYU. UW's run defense hasn't been tested but the gambling, pressing, stunting Huskies can rattle anybody. However, Nebraska's power in the middle with Joel Makovicka, and speed to the outside with Newcombe and Evans, give NU the edge, i iJ Wl Huard never got a chance to get going last year after Grant Wistrom got a hold of him. Huard is the real deal and everybody remembers how well backup Marques Tuiasosopo played. Washington receivers are top notch but nobody is In the category of Louisiana Tech's Troy Edwards.

Washington does play ball-control passing it has to because It can't run. Nino times, NU foes have ir "ys lorry than 25 I 8 BURTON 23 Perry a-a Zuti fcUi taiei tost fcat fc- I THE ASSOCIATED PRESS outrun a Brigham Ybung defender since losing to Washington in 1991 in Lincoln note that was the highest-ranked team (No. 4) to play a non-conference game in Lincoln since 1 987. Whether Solich wants to admit this is a big game or not, this Is a big game. Nebraska's kicking game has been strong with the tegs of the record-setting place-ktoker Kris Brown and punter Bill Lafleur.

Returns are strong with Joe Walker. Washington has struggled with 3.8 yards per punt return (1 00th in fslCAA) and a 32.8-yard average in net punting. Place- kicker Jim Ckurski missed a 24-yard field-goal attempt, an extra-point kick and had a point-aftor kick blocked last week. This year's Nebraska pass rush is not the same but it has more sacks than last year's group at this time last year. Rush end Mike Rucker is supposedly healthier than he has been the first three games. Defensive tackle Jason Wiltz Is back for some action and the new guys Jason Lohr, Loran Kaiser and Jeremy Slechta are getting better with experience. Chad Kelsay proved to be the fire-starter at Cal. Huard has a much cj ticker rctcapa than Col.
