Touch of 'Star Trek' in alien movie BY UNDA LEE The New York Times KFOR in conference The birth of the Big 12 Conference has made things a lot more interesting for local media typfes covering collegiate sports, and KFOR-AM 1240 is seizing an opportunity. In late August, the station will begin broadcasting a package of more than 20 Big 12 football contests, including the Nebraska vs. Kansas State game and Nebraska's final regular season game agaiitst Colorado. KLIN 1400 is the sanctioned affiliate of the network broadcasting NU sporting events. KFOR will be picking up opponents' play-by-play for the two broadcasts involving the Huskers.

KFOR operations manager Coty Mack says the fall lineup "will provide listeners with a great opportunity to keep track of the Big 12 schools and future Cornhusker opponents." Listeners will be able to hear games including the new Texas teams as well as old Big 8 favorites. One can foresee a situation in which Husker fans attending a late season game in Memorial Stadium might tune their headset radios to KFOR to check on how NITs closest conference rival is doing. KFOR's Big 12 football broadcast schedule starts Aug. 24 with Texas playing BYU in the Pigskin Classic. KFOR will keep its other traditional Husker football-related programming, including the Saturday morning "Tailgate Show" and the "Talk to Tom (Osborne) Show" every Wednesday night.N Lincoln once was a one-television-station town, passed over by new station developers.

Now, it seems, everybody wants in. In the wake of the success of Citadel Communications in moving Channel 8 to Lincoln, multiple license applications have been Hied with the FCC for two available UHF channels, 45 and 51, that have long been allocated to the Capital City. At least one broadcast entity made a run at Channel 45 before. During the 1980s, when minority media ownership was being especially encouraged by the FCC, a Native American consortium applied to construct Channel 45 as a full-service station, complete with a news operation. Nothing came of it, but those UHFs were still out there, just waiting for someone to pluck them from the broadcast spectrum.

Well, when it rains, it pours. Channel 45, I am told, now has as many as four applicants competing for it, including two companies known as Northwest Television and Walnut Creek Telecasting. Neither of these is owned by local folks. More recently, Channel 51 has become the prize to be fought over. Separate applications have been filed by Fant Broadcasting Co.

and World Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the Omaha World-Herald. Both of these have Nebraska ties, the World Herald as an Omaha-based multimedia company, Fant as former owner of the three-station NTV Network based in Kearney (see below).
