LOUIS (AP) — If Otis Armstrong is still suffering from the pulled hamstring muscle which curtailed his 1975 National Football League season, it's unnoticeable. Armstrong, the NFL's top rusher with 1,407 yards in 1974, tested his leg Saturday night and was at flank speed while rallying the Denver Broncos to a 21-17 pre-season triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. "I get a little stiff but otherwise it fires out all right," Armstrong said after gaining 118 yards on 12 carries, a 9.8 average, and scoring on touchdown runs of 81 and two yards. "If I stay healthy this year I'll be able to show everybody I'm just as good as I ever was," he predicted. "Sitting on the sidelines like last year is frustrating." Armstrong, whose performance headed a bruising Denver ground game consuming 278 yards, warmed up to his task with 17 yards on six carries in the opening half. Then, after Terry Metcalf's six-yard run helped establish a 17-7 St. Louis lead, the fourth-year running back opened the throttle wide. Armstrong, on a quick- opener from the Bronco 19, burst through a hole and cut sharply to his left against an overshifted defense. The next view the Cardinals had was that of his cleats as the former Purdue All-American won a sprint for the sideline despite an angle owned by safety Jeff Severson, a former Denver defender. Severson lunged unsuccessfully in his bid to shove the St. Louis 30. Five minutes later, following an intercepted Sam Wyche pass, Armstrong hurtled two yards to the winning score. "I thought the only chance I had was to jump and try pushing him out," Severson later reflected. "If I had it to do over, I might have tried something different." "When you come back from an injury like he had, a ruptured muscle, this is a real confidence-builder," Denver Coach John Ralston said of Armstrong, whose play in 1975 was restricted to four games. "He's a good back. He's a lot like Metcalf in that he'll hit the home run," Ralston said. "We expect to get fwo every game like that." Denver's comeback, aided also by Jon Keyworth's 93 rushing yards, overcame 11- for-16 passing by the Cards' Jim Hart, who rifled a nine- yard scoring toss to Jackie Smith in the opening period and set up Jim Bakken's 25- yard field goal. Keyworth dashed 11 yards to trim the St. Louis lead to 107 at half time, but the Cards sailed 82 yards behind Hart on a drive capped by Metcalf's touchdown in the third quarter. A 316-204 Broncos bulge in offense and St. Louis' 2.9-yard average per rush heightened the optimism of Ralston as Denver improved its preseason record to 4-2 and pinned a second defeat in five games on the Cards. "We expect a lot of our defense," Ralston said. "I think this was the llth time out of the last 12 games we've held Contact: SOUTHWEST Real Estate & Land Co. 2751177 llth&Kans.
