"It's a good opportunity for both of Lincoln Stars Coach Steve Johnson will enter a key three-game weekend next month without two veterans, but he doesn't mind the situation in the least Left wing Nick Fohr and defense- them," Johnson said. "Any time you have a chance to go overseas and play against some, of the top people in other countries it's tough to pass 1 A Tve been playing against kids from all over the United States, but by making the team IH be able to step up to a different level and see different styles of play again," Shaw said. "I think it will be a great experience." Former Lincoln Star Jason Braun, now with the Green Bay Gamblers, was one of two goalies selected to the squad.

De-fenseman Joe Culgin from Omaha was also named to the team. The rest of the USHL Select team members are: forwards Tyler Arnason (Far go-Moor-head), Jon Cullen (North Iowa), Nate DiCasmirro (North Iowa), Jesse Heerema (Thunder Bay), Matt Murray (Waterloo), Ton Nelson (North Iowa), Jason Nightingale (Des Moines), Mike Possin (Twin Cities), Eric Wen-kus (Twin Cities), Ryan Wetter-berg (Rochester) and Shaun Winkler (North Iowa); defense-men Jason Basile (Des Moines), Chad Mclver (Thunder Bay), Mike Pudlick (Twin Cities), Mike Stuart (Rochester); and goalie Dean Weasler letter of Intent to play college hockey. So far, Nebraska-Omaha has shown the most interest in getting a commitment from Fohr. From what I take of it, the tournament should do a lot for somebody looking for a chance to play college hockey," Fohr said. "It will be a great opportunity to play against the best players from other countries.

But playing in front of the scouts is a good opportunity, too." This will be the second time Shaw, from Jamestown, R.I., has competed for a select team during an international tournament When he was 15, Shaw was a member of the United States 17-and-under Select team that played against teams from all over the world during a tournament in Canada. When Shaw first found out he was nominated for the USHL Select Team, he said he was excited about the prospects of playing against international competition. considered for a spot on the USHL team. In fact, he had no idea such a team even existed. "Coach Johnson came up to me and said, 'Congratulations, you've made the USHL Select and I said, 'What USHL Select team?" Fohr said.

"I had no idea what he was talking about" The USHL Select team will face the World Junior Teams from Germany, Norway and Switzerland at the Four-Nations Tournament put on by the German Ice Hockey Federatioa All teams will face each other once in a round-robin format in games played by the rules and regulations of the International Ice Hockey Federatioa The prestigious tournament will likely attract 'many professional and college scouts, according to Johnson. For a player like Fohr, the fact that scouts will be in attendance makes the tournament even better. Fohr has yet to sign a national SHAW FOHR up. Jim Johannson of the Twin Cities Vulcans and PJC O'Hand-ley of the North Iowa Huskies put together and will coach the team that will represent the USHL at the tournament Each coach in the USHL could nominate up to eight from his players for the 20-man USHL Select squad. Simmons was the Packers' first-round draft pick in 1993 and starting left outside linebacker for the past 38 regular-season games. Coach Mike Holmgren publicly praised Simmons early this season for his leadership. But the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Tuesday that he got on Holmgren's "bad side" recently by showing up late for team meetings.

In six games this season, Simmons had 27 tackles. Simmons was the Packers' seventh-leading tackier during last year's Super Bowl season with 76. He also had one interception, Vi sacks and two forced fumbles. ALSO IN THE NEWS: The Chicago Bears may have injured wide receiver Curtis Conway back in the lineup Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. TENNIS Becker now in charge Boris Becker is taking over as manager of Germany's Davis Cup team with the task of restoring it to the level it enjoyed when he led the team as a player.

Becker was selected Tuesday to replace Niki Pilic, a Yugoslav who managed the team for 10 years. "When someone as successful as him offers his services to German tennis, this is an exceptional stroke of luck," said German Tennis Federation spokesman Jens-Peter Hecht. Former Davis Cup player Carl-Uwe Steeb, who helped Germany win its first trophy in 1988, was appointed team captain, also replacing Pilic. BASKETBALL WNBA expands schedule The WNBA will expand its regular season and playoffs next year, and add an All-Star game in 1999. League president Val Ackerman said Tuesday that each team will play 30 regular-season games in 1998 an increase of two over this year.

She also said the playoffs would feature the champions of the Eastern and Western conferences, along with the two teams with the next best regular-season records. The four teams will compete in two, best-of-three semifinal series. The semifinal winners will then play in a best-of-three series to determine the WNBA champion. This year, the semifinals and final were single elimination formats. The regular season will begin June 11, with the last possible date of the championship game Sept.

1. The first All-Star game will be held during the middle of the 1999 season as part of a three-day break. ALSO IN THE NEWS: Sunday Adebayo is returning to Arkansas and will play basketball after the NCAA relented and gave him another year of eligibility. BOXING Chaos reigns in courtroom Former heavyweight boxer Mitch Green, complaining he was being "sold out," bolted from a courtroom where he was testifying in his $25 million lawsuit over the beating Mike Tyson gave him in a street fight. Green, angry that promoter Don King was not in court, returned about 30 minutes later after a shouting match with his lawyers.

The judge warned him Monday that the suit would be thrown out if he stayed away. Green blames King for his career troubles and called him to testify, although Tyson is the defendant in the case. The judge told Green that King was expected in court today. "Nothing against Mike Tyson," said Green, during his often rapid, rambling and indistinct testimony. "Don King ripped me off.

Don King messed up my career." The former heavyweight champion and Green brawled in front of a Harlem store on Aug. 23, 1988. From wire reports Smehtik), 7:09: 4. Dallas, Lehtinen 1 (penalty shot). 15:02 (sh).
