tain. Near Extermination HONOLULU, Aug, 6. Sandalwood trees, whose burning wood has perfumed with incense the far-flung temples of the Orient since time immemorial, are on their way to become again a commercial product of the Hawaiian islands. It was the glamorous lure of fortunes to be made in the sandalwood trade of the tropical islands of the Pacific that brought many Yankee clipper ships to the shores of those romantic archi-a pelagos in th early part of the last century. So brisk was the business of cutting the trees and shipping the wood to China and other distant parts of, the world that the forests were denuded of them long ago, with the exception of a scattered few stately reminders of the time when they were the supreme source of weath to adventurous traders.

In the recent reforesting of the Hawaiian islands thousands of sandalwood seedlings have been planted and are flourishing. This program of restoring the valuable timber will be continued until the trees are as numerous as they were before their extermination began more than 100 years ago. Charles S. Ambitious plans for relief work have been started by the national relief commission of the Chinese government with a view to eliminating the war refugee problem in China.

These include various productive schemes, such as road construction, development of mines, soap making, spinning and weaving, and the manufacture of farm implements, designed to give work to the 15,000,000 war refugees throughout the country. As a start the commission has spent $5,000,000 to set up 30,000 industrial units, which will provide a livelihood for several million refugees. At the same the commission has prepared an extensive FRANCO REGIME SAID TO LACK NEEDED BALANCE Struggle Between Falangists And Array Due To Be Long By WILLIAM BIRO (Consolidated News Ftatarei) PARIS, Aug. 5. The troubles tn Spain during the last two weeks are but the forerunners of more serious disturbances.

As this writer pointed out shortly after the surrender of Madrid, on the basis of information received from sources friendly to General Franco, it will in all probability take many years for the new Spain to find its feet. It is impossible to reduce the situation in Spain to a simple formula. The victory of the Franco revolt is not the victory of a man, nor of an idea. It has swept into power a highly complex group of forces, many of which are diametrically opposed to each other. Each is pulling and hauling in its own particular direction.

Eventually a balance may be established, but that has not yet happened and may not happen for a long time. General Franco himself, I believe on the evidence of intelligent people who know him, is a sincere Spanish patriot who aspires only to give his country an honest and thoroughly Spanish government But it must not be forgotten that Franco was not the original leader of the revolt against the "frente popular" government. That leader was General Sanjurjo, who was killed in an airplane crash as he was flying from Lisbon to take charge of the nascent revolt, and Franco by the merest of accidents stepped into his shoes. The reason why most of the Spanish generals followed the Sanjurjo-Franco banner in 1938 was that they hoped to restore the ancient power of the army in Spain. The republic had tried to destroy that ascendency of the military over the civil arm of the government.

To accomplish this, it gave army officers the option of retiring on full pay if they did not wish to serve the republic. Very few took advantage of that generous offer, most of them preferring to stay on the active list and profit by the upheaval that they felt sure must come. But the policy of Italy and Germany during the two and a half years of civil strife was to weaken the power of the regular Spanish spoken grave words of disapproval of these outrages. This was followed by the action of the SPEEDSTER INSPECTS HIS COMMAND Catholic chaplain of Dartmoor prison, who refused the sacra BURLEY, England, Aug. 5.

Parliament has now placed in the hands of the government a weapon which, unscrupulously ued, might reduce the country to a state of slavery. But, as a matter of actual fact, not one person in 100 will even take the trouble to- acquaint himself with the provisions of the new act, and will certainly never come face to face with Its operation. On the surface, at least, the country seems less frightened of war with Chancellor Hitler than of negotiating with him. Warsaw shows few open signs of the diplomatic siege, in which it is engaged. If Spain were left to herself, the Falangists would not amount to much, but with German and Italian backing they have become a dominant force. Spain had a taste of dictatorship during the last years of the monarchy.

Mild as that dictatorship was, under the easy-going Primo de Rivera, the nation found it irksome. King Alfonso himself finally realized it must be abolished. The tussle now going on in Spain is between the totalitarian Falangistas, led by Minister of the Interior Serrano Suner, who is Franco's brother-in-law, and the regular army, whose principal chiefs are Generals Yague, Queipo de Llano, Aranda and others. These would like a "Spain for the Spaniards," on the old monarchial pattern, with or without a king, but with the regular army in the saddle. But the Falangists have the inestimable strength of Germany and Italy behind them, and seem at present to have the best chance of getting the upper hand.

The struggle, however, promises to be a long one. seat. The case has no precedent in the annals of the peerage. If the "Cash-and-Carry" clause had been in effect during the World war could this country have been drawn into the conflict? Probably not. Would the Lusitania have been sunk? Undoubtedly not Yet sinking of the Lusitania was the straw that broke the camel's back. The actual nature of the Lusitania's cargo was fairly well concealed from everyone except Germany.

Of course there were rumors and these rumors were vehemently denied by the war mongers in Washington and Wall street. Even the 1900 passengers who lost their lives were kept in the dark as to the actual nature of the Lusitania's cargo. If the Lusitania and other American vessels sunk prior to our entry into the World war had been neutral vessels they would never have been sunk. First of all we had a WPA that recognized wage differentials as between the skilled and unskilled. Then In the recent legislation the distinction was wiped out and all WPA workers were reduced to equal hours and the dead level of subsistence living. Protest against this is met with, "You can't strike against the government." This situation is near-on-to fascism in theie United States. Little wonder that the economic royalists hail it There is now little difference between the industrial serfs in the work camps of Nazi Germany and the WPA workers of the United States. Both are on a subsistence level of living.

Both are forbidden the right to strike. For these unfortunates, what is the difference between democratic United States and Nazi Germany? What is liberty if you don't eat? What is freedom if you have no choice but to submit or starve? What is democracy when you dare not protest injustices by stoppage of work. The law that President Roosevelt is now hiding behind was passed to protect the public from stoppage of normal and necessary public functions such as carrying the mail, national defense, etc. It is not meant to apply to such things as relief labor. The use of the law to cover this case is mere subterfuge.

President Roosevelt should not be permitted to cloud the issue with such a transparent dodge. Democracy, it appears, must be pretected from its "friends." LEE HAN KINS. Miami. what happens. Tour home is taken away from you and you are thrown into prison.

Have you ever thought about it or tried to? Well you can. It's a glorious experience.

You will be surprised to learn that you may find music divine harmony, symphonies in strange places. The most beautiful symphony I ever heard was in the supreme court of the United States. A strange place to hear such lovely music. But I heard it, saw it and partook of it A few years ago I attended my first session of the supreme court. I came away uplifted, enriched, strengthened.

I did not understand the words that were said, but the word was truth, spoken in the cause of righteousness. Truth spoken from the plane of principle is harmony. The unison of the minds expressing in perfected understanding, perfected knowledge, perfected awareness, shed such a light that I could see, hear and feel it, with my inner being of course. Music is vibration, you can hear and feel it Audible vibration is light stepped down into a lower octave. The stronger the more beautiful the light the more powerful, more colorful the tones of the music.

That session of the supreme court was like hearing Caruso sing, Elman play and Pavlova dance. It had all the beauty, grace, rhythm, perfection, harmony of a ballet, an opera, a symphony. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to the nine master musicians for I shall never hear anything more beautiful than the symphony of the supreme court And you can hear beautiful music in strange places too. You have only to listen to hear it. But listening means being quiet, giving attention to, pausing a moment, being still.

You will hear it I am sure. But if you don't it's because you have ears and hear not for music is everywhere, but it will be nowhere if it isn't first in your heart. And If you aren't hearing, seeing, feeling harmony, it's because you aren't expressing any. Everything must go out from you into the world for you receive only from the world that which you have given. You are hearing your own songs of praises, your own harmony or your own criticism or discord.

We do write music but we have to listen to our own compositions. And while to accept the full responsibility for our lives is hard in our own hands is our certain freedom. Let us all hear symphonies everywhere, everyday. But let U3 not be partakers of divine harmony, but makers of music as well. Miami.

I wonder whether the writer knows the following facts: (A) Germany did not rob or loot any-nation. Hitler only took back part of the territory stolen from Germany in 1918. When Hitler annexed Austria, doubtless the majority of the Austrian people were in favor of it Czechoslovakia also was part of the Austrian-German empire for centuries. Danzig also is a German city, founded about 400 years ago by Germans, and today it has a population of 95 per cent Germans, who, according to neutral observers, desire overwhelmingly to return to the Reich. While "Germany has not a single square mile in her possession that didn't belong to her before the war, France and England have thousands of square miles of former German territory and colonies.

(B) Hitler Germany is one of the world's biggest exporting nations and the world's second biggest importing nation, so that country is certainly not stopping the flow of trade. Through the intrigue of the international financiers, Germany was deprived of her gold so she pays for a large part of her needs with her own products. We refused to sell helium to Germany for commercial use, although our army authorities stated helium would be of little value for war uses. Last year Germany was ready to start regular airplane service across the Atlantic; Washington did not grant the permit. Despite those unfriendly acts on our part Germany buys more from us than we buy from her.

(C) France and England were "treaty-breakers" long before Hitler came to power. The German peoplj put down their arms in good faith in Mr. Wilson's 14 points. Not one of those points were considered by France or England. England and France solemnly promised to disarm, providing Germany would do so and Germany again trusted and disarmed completely.

International commissions confirmed time and again that Germany had fulfilled her pledge. Did France do likewise'? No! No sooner had Germany blasted away her last fortifications, when France started building the largest forts the world had ever seen and armed to the teeth There was no "big bad Hitler" or any Nazis in power then to blame; Germany was a true democracy then and what co-operation did the German people get? France was pledged by treaty to settle all disputes by peaceful means, yet five years after the war, in 1923. France sent African troops into disarmed Germany for no other reason than to get the richest German coal mines. The German cities were forced by France (unbelievable, but true) to furnish brothels with German girls for the French African negro hordes nations, thus establishing the fact that Christianity was to assume the offensive at all times.
