'X The first Elks Lodge was opened on February 16 1868 in New York City in-aid are given on a national basis the State Association annually awards scholarships to high school students and the Kingsport Lodge has for many years given scholarships in the amount of some 000 annually They are distributed to seniors from high schools of the greater Kingsport area including Gate City Va ion the 'basis of reeommdn (felons from principals and careful selection by the Scholarship Committee Specialized school scholarships are awarded in the field of nursing Kingsports Elks Lodge was instituted in March 1951 -with- a charter membership' of 92 members many of whom transferred their membership from the Bristol Lodge Among those who helped organize were Bandy Sr Bandy Jr Albert McConnell Frank Williams Paul Bellamy Johnson John Parker Richard Armstrong Kagey Gilbreath Jr and Milton Robelot ih t' It ih II VhU' jLx fi- f- 5 ih' THROUGH ITS Youth Committee the Kingsport Lodge sponsors or contributes to such worthy organizations as the Boys Club Girls Club Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops Boys State boys summer camp program Kingsport Swimming Association midget and Babe Ruth League Baseball and football teams FIRST EXALTED RULER of the group was A McConnell who served from 1951 to 1952 Present Exalted Ruler is A Clonce Jr 81 The facilities here are considered among the finest in the southeastern United States (Thnes-News Photo Earl Carter) KINGSPORT ELKS LODGE is observing the 100th anniversary of the fraternal order A Clonce Exalted Ruler of the local group stands outside the Kingsport Lodge home on Highway Since 1952 the Kingsport Lodge has contributed $1200 each year to the Palmer Memorial Center for Crippled Children in Kingsport There are no strings to its financial support The money may be used by the director for any worthwhile purpose in aiding the children in the Center The Kingport lodge Is the fourth largest in the state with 1606 members The original Lodge home just outside the city limits on the Greeneville highway was expanded in 1958-59 Then in 1964 the lodge added a ballroom and expanded kitchen facilities In 1966 another expansion program was completed The Kingsport Lodge home is considered one of the finest in physical facilities in the southeastern United States Sheriff Candidates Hit Juvenile Crime Increase Hirt Will Toot Horn At Bristol The Kingsport Lodges facilities have been bought and paid for completely by its members There are no outside solicitations For years the Kingsport Lodges Veterans Committee has furnished entertainment to the patients at Mountain Home Veterans Hospital in Johnson City The Committee puts on bingo parties for the ward patients and supplies prizes worth some $500 per year The Committee also hols an annual watermelon feast and Christmas party and collects and distributes pocket-size books When the Kingsport lifesaving and Rescue Squad recently built its fine new headquarters building the Kingsport Elks Lodge gave the crew $5000 toward equipment THE KINGSPORT Lodge Is outstanding In ritual work and holds many state and national awards The local group has placed first in the Tennessee state competition each year since 1960 with the exception of 1963 In 1965 the Kingsport team won the national competition In Miami when Henry McKay was Exalted Ruler That year the Leading Knight Martin Karant was named All-American Karant was also on the All-American teams as Loyal Knight and Exalted Ruler Kingsports A1 Hirt fans arent going to be disappointed after all Theyll just have to travel a little farther to hear Americas greatest trumpet 1 showman I It was previously announced that Hirt would I appear here at the Dobyns Bennett gymnasium but a mix-up in scheduling prevented the use of the building Instead Hirt and his 12- piece orchestra Pee Wee and the Young Set will of teenagers their problems and tendencies to seek excitement and thrills I shall require all members of the! manner EVERY CHRISTMAS the Lodge holds a party for area families whose income would make it impossible to provide children with a party and Christmas presents The annual budget for this project has long exceeded $3000 Each child is given a certificate good for clothing wily a Christmas present suited to his or her age and a bag of candy fruits and nuts The party which is- given at the "Lodge home always" include professional entertainment said he sees a need for a full-time safety consultant within the Sheriffs Department He said he would like to Institute a safety program! similar to that conducted by the state With 67 155 motor vehicles registered in the county 1 feel that a traffic program of this kind is one of the greatest needs of the Sheriffs Department I will have a qualified safety consultant to carry on this work and he will conduct safety programs and aid driver-training classes in schools Since he left office Weaver had been selling cars at a Bristol auto agency He left this job two months ago to devote full time to his campaign for nomination Since I left the sheriffs department I have had approximately 5000 people come to me to run for sheriff Weaver said Other All-American members In national competition were Jack Hun toon as Chaplain in J962 and Henry McKay as Chaplain in 196L Two men seeking the office of Sheriff of Sullivan County said this week they consider the increase in juvenile crime' one of the most serious law enforcement problems in the county The candidates former Sullivan County Sheriff Kyle Weaver and Edward Faye are both seeking the nomination as candidate for sheriff in the Aprils Democratic Primary Weaver a former sheriff said that if elected he will establish a juvenile department with a county juvenile officer operating within the framework of the Sheriff Department Weaver said he had a well-qualified man in line for the position but would not reveal his name He did say however that he is one of the most respected members of the law enforcement profession In announcing his plans for the office Frye a Blountville High School teacher said As a father I will be constantly aware of the needs Frye 38 holds a bachelor of laws degree and has 9 years experience as a Tennessee State Trooper and 4 years in metropolitan police work This years officers will compete with other Tennessee teams at the state convention in Bristol April 4-7 this year The winner of the state contest will compete in the national contest to be held in New York City In July at the 100th Grand Lodge Convention appear at Vance Junior High School Auditorium in Bristol according to Eddie Skelton promoter of the concert Date of the concert is Friday March 8 beginning at 8 pm The show will run for two and a half hours and special sound j' equipment will be used i Skelton said Tickets will go on sale this week and all seats will be reserved The Order of Elks is distinctively American and the local Lodge provides flags for organizations such as scouts schools etc It also promotes a love and respect for God and country through its Americanism Committee Each year on June 14 the Lodge holds a Flag Day service in its home and pays tribute to the history of toe Flag in an impressive ceremony highlighted by an outstanding featured speaker The Elks on a national state and local scale lend strong support to education
