The 36 assigned to my museum accomplished more in six hours than all the adults who helped out the previous month. These kids worked in the rain, cold and snow without a single complaint I think today's teens are terrific, Brentwood, N.Y.: If "Midwestern" doesn't like teen-agers, he should help improve them by joining a youth group, the PTA or a mentoring organization. Lawrence, I agree with "Midwestern Realist." Kids today are lazy, whiny and violent.

I read the papers, and am dumbfounded and disturbed by their behavior. I fear for our future. Mobile, I am 16 years old, have never had a ticket, never done drugs; I enjoy Shakespeare, listen to Chopin, and excel in Latin. And it's not true that most teen-agers can't name their state capital. Ours is Montgomery.

Readers can write to Ann Landers in cam of and am stationed in South Korea. I have seen my wife a total of two days in the six months we have been married. Because I love my country, I am willing to sacrifice the first year of my marriage to protect the liberties and values our country holds dear. Bronx, N.Y.: You are looking at the world through rose-colored glasses, Annie. I'm a teacher, and I can tell you, the public schools around here are like battle zones.

I'm grateful, they have metal detectors at the front door. You're optimistic. I'm worried. Washington, D.C.: If "Midwestern Realist" doesn't like teen-agers, he should put the blame where it belongs on the adults who raised them. What plagues this country is not young people, it is old prejudices.

Austin, Texas: "Midwestern" is right. The issues are real. We did not have mass school shootings before the '90s. The lyrics of music today are about killing people. Their music is not merely anti-establishment.

It's Dear Ann Landers I just finished reading the letter from "Midwestern Realist," who said teen-agers are ignorant and rude, their music is garbage, their art is terrible and if we had a war, we could never win it because the 18- to 24-year-olds are strung out on drugs and in no shape to defend our country. Midwestern Realist" is out of his mind. I have taught religion at our church for the past six years. Our teen-agers volunteer for food drives for the homeless, they work in soup kitchens, teach religious education to preschoolers, and participate in Bible School as teachers and assistants. Last year, a group of eighth-grade boys helped wrap more than 1,000 toys they had collected for children who otherwise would have had nothing.

The teens I've had contact with are taking more difficult subjects in high school than I took in college. They are focused and concerned about the world. I am optimistic about the future of our country, and I'm proud of them. Midwest Mom ANN LANDERS Advice Columnist Dear Mom: I share your confidence. She delivered turkeys to the needy on Thanksgiving, and helped run the Special Olympics at her school. She plays classical piano, excels in three sports, and maintains an A average. Dear Readen Osteoporosis is a common, age-related affliction in older adults, marked by a progressive loss of calcium from bones, leading to increased brit-tleness that makes fractures more likely. Although the disease affects both sexes, it seems to be a particular problem in post-menopausal women, and is diagnosed using an X-ray test called bone densitometry. Studies have shown that adults more than 65 years old need extra calcium and vitamin in their diets in order to increase bone mineral density. The current recommendation is 1,200 to 1,500 milligrams of calcium and 400 to 600 international units of vitamin per day.

In addition, osteoporosis can often be arrested in women by bound," a common situation in which the sprays actually cause congestion, rather than relieving it. So the more he uses them, the worse he gets. I agree that he ought to discontinue them. Second, he is drinking far too much beer, which, over time, will damage almost every organ in his body and lead to early disability or death. His alcohol abuse should be addressed by his doctor, by counseling or by a support group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Third, the nasal congestion and alcohol intoxication are the probable cause of his snoring. If he follows your and my suggestions, the snoring should improve. If not, he ought to consider seeing an ear-nose-and-throat specialist. Readers can write to Dr. Gott in care of Newspaper Enterprise 200 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10016.

thereby reducing the risk of fractures. Unfortunately, these drugs have a downside. They are expensive, must be taken in a special way (in the morning on an empty stomach in an upright posture) and are associated with several potential side effects, including heartburn, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Dear Dr. Gott: My husband uses over-the-counter nasal sprays for congestion about 15 times a day even though the products are advertised to be used only every 12 hours.

He also drinks a 12-pack of beer every night, then snores so loudly that I must sleep in another bedroom. I tell him to cut out the sprays and reduce his beer consumption, but it's like whistling in the wind. Any suggestions? Dear Readen I'll try. First of all, your husband is abusing nasal sprays and is a victim of "re DR. PETER G0TT Advice Columnist hormone therapy, such as Pre-mpro.

Further, Evista, a selective estrogen receptor, has been shown to stop the progression of osteoporosis However, the only medicines that show promise in reversing bone-calcium loss are the bi-phosphonates Fosamax and Ac-tonel, which actually drive calcium into weakened bones, T2-18 For answers to today's crossword, call 1-900-454-7377! 99c per minute, touch-tonerotary phones. They were basically the same; only the hosts were different, and some of them were awful. KLMS is using the format change to bolster local efforts.

KLMS Sport Director Troy Cover-dale will host a live hourlong, call-in show from Bleachers at 5 p.m Fridays. The station also will cover 16 high school boys basketball games up seven from last year. KLMS also broadcasts all Lincoln Lightning arena football games. The following is a rundown of KLMS' new weekday schedule: 5-9 am ESPN Morning with Mike Golic and Mike three Lincoln Homer's locations ThirteenWNET New York, one of public television's leading producers of national programming, is looking for individ uals for "Frontier House," a six part series slated to air in 2002 that will find modern-day Amer icans living out the trials and tri umphs of frontier life. Applications are available by writing: Nebraska ETV Network, Attention: Larry Kubert, P.O.

Box 83111, Lincoln, 68501 or down load an application from Ne braska ETVs Web site, NET Online (http:net.unl.edu) Deadline is Jan. 15. Jeff Korbelik writes about TV and radio and can be reached, at 473-7213 or jkorbelikjoumalstar.com. My phone started ringing the minute KLMS began teasing its new format change last week. Lincoln's die-hard sports fanatics were afraid they were losing the sports-talk station to something dreadful such as straight talk radio or, worse yet, a music format But the folks at Three Eagles Communication know they have something worth keeping.

They just want to make it better. That's why Three Eagles switched to ESPN Radio today from the One-on-One Sports Network on KLMS (1480 AM). Gone are Jay Mariotti, "Nasty" Nestor Aparicio, Papa Joe Chevalier, Peter Brown and Rick Ballou. In their place are Mike Golic Tony Komheiser, Dan Patrick, Chuck Wilson and analysts such as Brent Musberger and Dick Schaap. Jim Rome who is not affiliated with either One-on-One or ESPN will remain in the 11 am to 2 pm timeslot on KLMS.

Goby Mack, Three Eagles' operation manager, said ESPN approached them about making trie change. He said the offer was too good to pass up. "We have seen an increase in ratings over the years for Jim Rome, but One-on-One's ratings have stayed flat," he said "We see this as an opportunity to align ourselves and join with the biggest name in sports." I approve of the change. ESPN's Eroduct is more polished and pro-ssional, and personalities such as 9-1 1 am. The Tony Komheiser Show 1 1 am-2 p.m Jim Rome 2-5 p.m.

The Dan Patrick Show 4 5-6 p.m. Game Day 4 6 p.m. -5 am Game Night Weekends will feature Game Day, Game Night and special programming (NFL College Game-Day, NASCAR, etc). Around the dial Joe, Timmo and Bill, the morning crew at the Eagle (KTGL 92.9 FM), have released their "Best of 2000" CD. The disc features 27 bits from their popular morning show.

The disc is a bargain at $4.99 and a great stocking stuffer for Eagle fans. It's available at the JEFF KORBEUK Journal Star Staff Writer Patrick, Schaap and Musberger are more recognizable. I'll miss Papa Joe and his "Bite Me Wednesdays" as well as Chicago Sun Times columnist Mariotti teaming with AP columnist Jim Litke. Channdaj 6 p.m. 6:30 7 p.m.
