240 So. NEBRASKA VS. 1998 SEASON A new starting quarterback and l-back and four new offensive line starters seem to be the key to Nebraska taking a shot at winning a fourth national championship in five years. But the real key may be Nebraska finding the replacement in heart, desire and leadership lost when Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter were picked in the first round of the NFL draft. Players and coaches say the leadership is there.

Only time and tight games will tell. FRANK SOLICH VS. TOM OSBORNE Solich has a stack of history facing him. Tom Osborne was unmatched in college football history. But Osborne had to overcome the Devaney legend and finally did.

Following the storied leaders in college sports Is not easy see Gary Gibbs at Oklahoma, Ray Perkins at Alabama, Earle Bruce at Ohio State and Bob Davie at Notre Dame. But Solich knows the Nebraska offense as well as he possibly can and he has the help of longtime assistants Milt Gill, Dan Young and Ron Brown. On defense, Solich has the help of defensive coordinator Charlie McBrkJe, secondary coach George Darlington, linebacker coach Craig Bohl and rush ends coach Nelson Barnes. For that reason, the Black Shirt defense will be as good' as ever. SOLICH VS.

GARY CROWTON Louisiana Tech Coach Crowton has a vast background in offensive football. He coached with the best and the brightest, including LaVeB Edwards (BYU), Mike Holmgren (now of the Green Bay Packers), Jack Bicknell (formerly of -Boston College) and Tom Coughlin (now with the Jacksonville Jaguars). Louisiana Tech has plenty of offense and the people to execute the wide- passing attack that really has not been stopped. Solich took over as head coach and offensive coordinator. He knows how the option -offense works.

Crowton knows how to win. Solich should be no stranqer to the task. BOBBY neWcombe VS. TECH DEFENSE AND CRITICS Newcombe said he understands more about criticism after taking a psychology course this summer. 1 understand the difference between actor and actor-observer, and the actor-observer bias.

I see the key block thrown by Joel Makovicka or the cut-back block by Lance Brown or the holes opened up by Josh Heskew." For his first game as a starting quarterback, Newcombe has a solid grasp of the offense and advice from former NU quarterbacks Turner Gill, Steve Taylor and Scott Frost. Tast year, I could run or throw. That was it," he said of his two games as a backup. "This year, I have the whole offense at my fingertips." TIM RATTAY VS. NEBRASKA DEFENSE It might seem that the match here is Rattay's strong arm and cagey quarterback ing against Nebraska's secondary.

The real matchup is between Rattay and Nebraska's pass rush. If rush ends Mike Rucker and Chad Kelsay, and defensive tackles Stove Warren and Jason Wiltz can cave in the line and pressure Rattay, the way Nebraska defenses crushed Florida and Fr. 255 220 305 93 Brandon Moobwry LRE 94 Brandon Wardyn RRE 94 Jeremy Slechta DL 95 J.P. If the rush Isn't there, Rattay could have a typical day for him 360 yards of total offense, at least three touchdown passes, 30 completions and 50 attempts. Rattay also gets an NU secondary that's a little jumbled, as Mike Brown moves to free safety and Joe Walker takes over at rover to cover for ini ired Clint Finley.

TECH DEFENSE VS. NU OFFENSIVE LINE This gets to be a simple matchup of Bulldog tackles Otis Pitts and Jerome King, defensive ends Desmond Nunnery and Jarrett Procell, against Nebraska's offensive line. King tod Tech with seven sacks and moved from end to tackle. Remember, the Bulldog defense was 64th against the run last year and the best running team Louisiana Tech faced was 84th in the country in rushing. Nebraska's offensive Rne has just one starter back, center Josh Heskew.

The line includes Adam Julch, who is just starting to reach full-speed after off-season surgery on his ankle, and former walk-ons Jason Schwab and Ben Gessford. Because tackle Jeff Clausen is out, Gessford will double as a backup tackle, and sophomore Russ Hochstein will back up at guard. Heskew said the line seems as good as ever. KRIS BROWN VS. HISTORY Nebraska's strength in the kicking game was a plus at least three times last year and usually a dcisive issue in any close game.

Brown has 12 records already and is five PATs away from another, and 1 3 points from tlie all time NU scoring record. His range on field goals is easily 50 yards and he has made 1 6 in a row. Ken Hambieton.
