E. Governor McKelvie recently issued a proclamation calling upon the people to fittingly observe tbe golden anniversary of Arbor day, but no planting of trees was Indulged In by state offerers. They observed it as a legal holiday. As the capltol grounds ore being denuded of trees and also of sod to make way for a new capitol it was deemed that any more practical observance of the day could be indulged in at the capltol. In years past trees were planted on the capitol lawn, and thus the growth of trees finally approached the very walls of the bulldins.

All trees are to be removed to the street pavement and another scheme of landscape gardening will be tried when the new building is finished. Governor McKelvie received the following message from Washington, signed by Charles Lathrop Pack, American forestry association, dated Friday. "The American forestry association tomorrow plants three memorial trees in honor of J. Sterling Morton, the father of arbor day. Congratulations to the oace treeless state which now, thanks to the famous adopted son, has become the 'tree planters state" HARSH.

Slay Center Sun: Last Monday the mittee consisting of the governor, Senators Bushee and Rickert and Representatives Hoffmeister and Epperson met In this city together with the county supervisors, State Engineer Johnson and other men from his office and Attorney General Davis to hear officially the various charges which for months have been freely made against the state board of public works.
