INSIDE FOOTBALL Lincoln Journal Star Friday, November 7, 1997 Page design: Karl Vogel Jones the slue for Mizzou WW. I BY STEVE SIPPLE Lincoln Journal Star ii Jr 'r i throw and catch and protect," Jones said. "It's taken a lot of heat off the running game." Jones felt some heat in the form of criticism after Missouri's 15-7 loss to Kansas in the second week of the season. He was 10-for-20 passing for 107 yards and threw an interception as the Tigers were closing in on the end zone. To cap it off, he was blind-sided and fumbled on Mizzou's final possession of the game.

The next week, a column in the university student newspaper said Jones would make a better water boy. "I just kind of looked at (the column) and laughed," Jones said. "It was pretty classless." These days, Missouri has the central part of the state in a frenzy after consecutive victories against Texas (37-29), Oklahoma State (51-50 in double overtime) and Colorado (41-31). At 6-3 overall, the Tigers have essentially locked up a bowl trip now that they have guaranteed themselves a winning record. Most people have been startled by Missouri's resurgence.

Before the season, however, Jones predicted a winning season and a bowl game. "I knew how hard we had worked and how much talent we had," he said. from an increasingly balanced offensive attack during a three-game win streak that has the Tigers feeling confident entering Saturday's showdown. "I couldn't ask for a better time to play Nebraska," Jones said. "We have momentum and we're believing in everything we're doing.

We're just focused on getting it done on our side of the ball, just executing what we know we can do." Offensively, Missouri is capable of inflicting damage. The Tigers average 267.2 yards per game on the ground, which ranks second behind Nebraska in the Big 12 and sixth nationally. Jones, a dangerous option QB, is seventh in the league in rushing, averaging 78 yards per game. Mizzou's ground attack has been strong from the start this season. But Jones, who has been starting since midway through his freshman season, struggled with his passing the first four games, hitting only 32-of-71 (45.1 percent) for 426 yards.

He threw four interceptions and only one touchdown pass. In the last five games, however, Jones has completed 53-of-80 (.663) for 834 yards and seven touchdowns with only one interception. "The coaches are really believing in what we're doing, that we can Call him Missouri's glue. The general of the Tigers' troops. Whatever.

All quarterback Corby Jones really wants is the football in his hands in pressure situations. "I like it when everything is on the line. I want the ball and I'll decide where to go from there," said Jones, a 6-foot-l, 227-pound junior. The graduate of Hickman High in Columbia, who was heavily recruited by Nebraska says he has always thrived under pressure. "Since high school, though, I've actually mellowed and realized I cant do it all by myself," he said.

That Jones doesn't need to do everything on his own is a large part of the reason he can even ponder having the ball in any type of pressure situation in Saturday's 2:35 p.m. game against top-ranked Nebraska at Faurot Field in Columbia. Pressure comes when the game is on the line not during the blowouts that have typified recent Nebraska-Missouri games. The Cornhuskers have beaten the Tigers 18 straight times, capturing the last four games by an average score of 50-5. Missouri, however, has benefited v.

OU Continued from Page 1D Oklahoma." Wistrom ravaged the Sooners with 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. Four of his tackles were for losses, including two sacks. He forced three fumbles, recovering one of them himself, during what is regarded as the finest performance by a Cornhusker defender this season. "Fortunately, things went a little better for me (against Oklahoma)," Wistrom said. "There wasn't a personal vendetta or anything that I thought I had to prove.

I just did what I had to do, and the ball bounced my way." McBride said Oklahoma obviously decided not to plan its offensive scheme around Wistrom. "I think they decided they had a game plan and that they would just hope for the best," McBride said. "Well, it didn't work." If measured on statistics alone, Wistrom might be relegated to long shot status in the race for the Lombardi Award and the Football News Defensive Player of the Year honor (he is a semifinalist for both). McBride said it would be a shame if Wistrom is denied national honors based on numbers. Statistics, McBride said, fail to provide an accurate measure of Wistrom's importance to the Cornhusker defense, which ranks third nationally in total defense.

Wistrom, meanwhile, has said he is more interested in Nebraska's pursuit of another national championship than he is in individual achievement. The pursuit continues Saturday at Columbia, where the top-ranked Cornhuskers face surging Missouri. Playing his home-state school, Wistrom said, always pumps him up. "It's even more special now that Missouri is having such a great season," said Wistrom, referring to the Tigers' 6-3 record and three-game win streak. "Before, I kind of looked at it as just another game on our schedule that we should win, but now it's going to be another great challenge for us.

"They're playing extremely well right now, and they believe in what they're doing." Wistrom fans should be thankful MU was a struggling program with a new coach when it recruited Wistrom, who was considered the top prep prospect in Missouri. "Maybe if things had been like they are now back when I was coming out (of high school), maybe I'd be playing for them right now," Wistrom said. "Unfortunately, Missouri wasn't at that level yet But they're headed in the right direction." Notes Nebraska starting split end Jeff Lake (sprained elbow) returned to practice Thursday for the first time this week. Cornhusker Coach Tom Osborne said Lake will probably make the trip to Missouri, though no final decision has been made. No.

2 left cornerback Brandon Harrison (shoulder strain) has been ruled out of the game, Osborne said. Osborne said Nebraska had planned to conduct a short practice on the grass of Missouri's Faurot Field today but instead will work out on a nearby soccer field. "They said it's been raining down there and they've had field) covered," he said. "I know they're going to bring In helicopters to try to dry it off. They have to paint it and it takes five hours to dry.

"With all the bad things people have said about artificial turf, we've never had to tell a team it couldn't work out because we had to paint the field. And we've never had to bring in a helicopter to dry it off." BA few standing-room-only tickets remain for Missouri game. People wishing to purchase the (14 tickets should call 1-800-CAT-PAWS (228-7297) to charge the tickets to MasterCard, Visa or Discover. 280 So. 290 Fr.
