Lincoln Journal Star Wednesday. January 3. 1996 7C Page design: Julie Koch WHAT OTHERS SAID ABOUT FIESTA BOWL Frazier was magnificent pushing past half a dozen Gators to reach the sideline and run 75 yards for a touchdown in the second half. His two interceptions made absolutely no difference as he posted a career high with 199 yards. It was his his 33rd victory in 36 starts and his final college game "I had a great career at Nebraska," he said.

"There's no better way to end it." Frazier shared the wealth with his offensive line and tailback Lawrence Phillips, who shoved around Florida defenders all game. He ran away from the Gators on a 42-yard score in the second quarter as Nebraska sealed the victory. Dave Zelio Associated Press So much for (Steve) superiority. So much for the Fun N' Gun. And so much for the future.

Florida Coach Steve Spurrier, the mastermind of the most sophisticated passing attack in college football an offense that opponents are scrambling to duplicate and defend might want to re-read his history books, which say championships are won with running games and defense. The Gators had neither and Ne braska had both in record-breaking supply in the Fiesta Bowl Tuesday night before 79.864 in Sun Devil Stadium. Rushing yards: Nebraska 524 an NCAA record for bowl games; Florida minus-28. Total offense: Nebraska 629 yards: Florida 269. Points: Nebraska 62.

Florida 24. Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne's decision to stay with his starters after the outcome was decided probably won votes from his peers, since Spurrier is notorious for running up the score. "We've been on the good end of these scores and now we're on the bad end," Spurrier said. "We didn't come to the ballpark to play the best we could, and I'm embarrassed about that. "We were outmatched.

If we're ever going to beat Nebraska, we have to be as strong as they are. We have to come to the ballpark prepared to play, like they were. We got clobbered." The Cornhuskers' yardage output was not surprising. "Once this offense gets rolling, it's pretty hard to stop." Frazier said. Jon Wilner Los Angeles Daily News and a Nebraska team that was forced to defend more than its national championship.

Tackle-busting runs by Phillips and Tommie Frazier, and a smothering defense helped the top-ranked Huskers demolish No. 2 Florida 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl, making them the first repeat champions in 16 years and the first team to win consecutive titles with perfect records in nearly four decades. Nebraska dominated the showdown between the nation's only undefeated, untied teams, scoring 29 straight points in the second quarter and taking the zip out of Florida's "Fun 'N Gun" aerial attack by pounding quarterback Danny Wuerffel with seven sacks and picking him off three times. "Nebraska's just way better than us," Florida coach Steve Spurrier said. "They outcoached us and outplayed us.

We got smashed up front Tommie Frazier made us look like we weren't trying at times." Rick Warner Associated Press Today Coach Tom Osborne and Nebraska fans should ponder whether it was worth it. Today the football world should be celebrating the proclamation of Osborne's Cornhuskers as the greatest team in college football history. That's what the Cornhuskers looked like this season, particularly Tuesday night when they brought the college football season to a close by routing the second-ranked Florida Gators 62-24 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Cornhuskers chewed up Coach Steve Spurrier's Gators, amassing a Fiesta Bowl record 524 yards on the ground. Defensively, Nebraska made Florida's All-America quarterback Danny Wuerffel (three interceptions) look like what he is an overrated benefactor of most dangerous option quarterback you could ever imagine and that this was also a truly great defensive team.

It's obvious now I know some smart people. Maybe they should have borrowed my computer. And perhaps Florida coach Steve Spurrier should have borrowed the 49ers, Cowboys or somebody, because the Wayland Pop Warners had as much chance of winning thi? game as the team Mr. Smug brought to Sun Devil Stadium. Remember Ye Olden Days (i.e., the '80s and even the early '90s), when Nebraska had a defense whose 40-yard times were clocked by calendars rather than stopwatches? No longer.

Nebraska got tired of losing the big bowl games to teams with far more overall speed. The truth is that Nebraska now has a defense to match its offense. Florida became the" 12th opponent to discover just how devastating the Cornhusker defense can be. First of all, you can forget about running. Florida's running back tandem of Elijah Williams and Terry Jackson combined for 9 yards on eight first-half carries.

Throw in a minus-22 courtesy of blitzing linebackers and safeties and that gave Florida a total of minus-13 yards on the ground during the first 30 minutes of play. Danny Wuerffel wound up being sacked seven times, and he never did get the number of that truck. But the really astounding revelation was the fact that Florida's renowned passing attack couldn't faze Nebraska, either. Wuerffel did complete 12 of 21 for 137 first-half yards, but a lot of it was in the so-what? category. Bob Ryan The Boston Globe A troubled season ended in overwhelming triumph Tuesday night for Tom Osborne.

Lawrence Phillips Spurrier's system. The Cornhuskers, 12-0, are indeed the No. 1 team in college football They're probably better than a few NFL squads. Tuesday night they looked better than the Chiefs. But instead of fully celebrating the option brilliance of quarterback Tommie Frazier (199 rushing yards and two TDs), instead of focusing on the overwhelming dominance of Nebraska's defense (Florida minus-28 rushing yards), instead of reveling in the improbability of Nebraska's back-to-back No.

1 finishes (25 straight victories), Tuesday night I spent a great deal of time wondering why Osborne let one ill-behaved man ruin such a wonderful night for Nebraska football. Was it worth it. Coach Tom? Osborne's favorite Cornvict, Lawrence Phillips, the man with the "anger control" problem who pleaded no contest to mercilessly beating his ex-girlfriend, left his his mark on Nebraska's finest moment. Phillips, installed in the starting lineup for first time since the second week of the season, danced and juked for 165 yards and two TDs, displaying the talents that will make him a sure-fire No. 1 NFL draft pick.

Too bad his participation was unforgivable and unneeded. You'll never convince me that Nebraska needed Phillips to beat these Gators. Without Phillips. Nebraska would have won by a mere 30 points. Jason Whitlock Kansas City Star Not even Tommie Frazier thought it would be this easy.

In a Fiesta Bowl where some thought the tiebreaker might come in handy, Frazier and Nebraska outclassed and outran Florida, routing the Gators 62-24 Tuesday night for the Cornhuskers' second consecutive national championship. (402)484-8400 Eastern Nebraska Agency Woodmen Accident and Life Company a Lincoln, Nebraska The first sign was the flood of red shirts swarming over the desert this week. There were vastly more red Nebraska shirts than orange-and-blue Florida shirts in the narrow, outdated thoroughfares and sprawling shopping centers of the Phoenix area.

The dedication, the tenacity, the devotion of Nebraska fans was an omen of the stomping that was to follow in a long evening at the Fiesta Bowl. Nebraska fans had been gobbling up airline tickets and hotel reservations for a year, knowing that this year the unholy bowl alliance would become a reality. Of course, you could also say that Nebraska fans had more climatalog-ical incentive to get here than Florida fans. The domination of red inside the Fiesta Bowl was truly impressive. Turns out the Nebraska fans had gobbled up most of the game tickets, too.

The color motif was no more overwhelming than the power and the speed of the Nebraska Corn-huskers. Once those 300-pound, grain-fed brutes began blasting open holes, once Lawrence Phillips and Tommie Frazier started high-stepping it toward the end zone, it was a red, red night in Tempe. One man. one vote. One woman, one vote.

The numbers in the stands told the story on the field. Nebraska is the national champion for the second straight season, and this time there cannot be even the slightest debate. George Vecsey, New York Times The words had belonged to Tommie Frazier. "The one thing that can put all this to rest," the quarterback of the Nebraska Cornhuskers said near the end of their perfect but painfully controversial season, "is if we go out and win a championship." That is what Nebraska did, with a relentlessness that overwhelmed the Florida Gators and turned the 25th Fiesta Bowl into a shockingly complete 62-24 rout. With Frazier running for 199 yards in the final game of his remarkable college career including a signature 75-yard touchdown run in which he broke six tackles the Cornhuskers became the first team to win consensus back-to-back championships in 39 years.

Nebraska (12-0) joined the 1955 and 1956 Oklahoma Sooners as the only teams to win unanimous championships since the two-poll system was introduced in 1950. The fourth quarter, a time the Cornhuskers had been counting on with the hope that a cumulative punishment would unravel Florida's dynamic offense, became little more than a long Nebraska celebration. For one night in Sun Devil Stadium, before a record crowd of 79,864, the Huskers. with their 25th consecutive victory, replaced an analysis of their problems by taking a place as one of the outstanding teams in the recent history of the college game. Malcolm Moran, New York Times He ran as though his life depended on it.

which in a distressing sort of way was true. Lawrence Phillips wasted the first real chance anyone gave him to make something of himself. To let Florida's defenders steal the second and possibly last chance was more than he could bear. And so on this night, in a town halfway between the West Covina, group home where he was raised and the Lincoln campus where his coaches and teammates made up a second surrogate family, Phillips ran. And ran and ran and ran and ran.

And wriggled and writhed, twisted and fought, and refused to stop until he was sure trouble couldn't hold him in its grasp forever. "It feels pretty good to be with my teammates and win another national championship," the running back said moments after Nebraska beat Florida 62-24. A few moments after that, before the questions could take an ominous turn toward the assault of his former girlfriend last September. Phillips got up and left. JimLitke Associated Press.

If I wanted to see this kind of slaughter, I could have accompanied the Celtics to Seattle. National championship game? The Tostitos Fiesta Alliance1 vs. 2 Bowl looked like just another routine Nebraska-Oklahoma State game to me. We've all seen this 62-24 Stuff before. They didn't need referees.

They needed representatives from the Arizona SPC A. What, you've never heard of Gator abuse? I Bada-bing, bada-boom. and refresh my memory. Does Nebraska get the winner of Buffalo-Pittsburgh or Kansas City-Indianapolis? I forget. Full disclosure time: I picked Florida.

I thought they'd find enough Ways to score. A lot of people told me' I was inhaling the funny weed, they told me that Nebraska was a phenomenal football machine, that has the best offensive line in the country, that Tommie Frazier is the PUBLIC NOTICE REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS The Stote of Nebraska is requesting sealed pro posals for development of an electronic operations and procedure manual tor the Unemployment Insurance Division of the Deportment of Labor.
