I FROM PAGE 1A Lincoln Journal Star Wednesday. January 3. 1996 7A NUHuskers run all over Gators for dazzling repeat FansCrowds stream into downtown Lincoln half. Nebraska is the first team to earn back-to-back national championships since Alabama won the 1978-79 titles, and the Huskers are the first to win the title in all major polls since Oklahoma repeated in 1955-56. Nebraska, in the national championship game for the third consecutive year, completed its 25th consecutive victory dating back to an 18-16 loss to Florida State in the 1994 Orange Bowl.

The Huskers also swept four Top Ten teams this season, beating Kansas State, Kansas and Colorado in addition to the Continued from Page 1A swing. Fans shot off fireworks. They climbed trees and stop lights, jumped up and down on a pick-up truck bed. shouted slogans, waved flags and Christmas trees, and smacked hands together in celebration of Nebraska's 62-24 victory over Florida. "We waited 23 years for one and we got two back-to-back," said Rich Senkbile.

a former Central City fan now stationed with the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg. N.C. He and his wife, Heidi, were in Nebraska visiting relatives and drove to Linroln to watch the game. But Street couldn't contain all of the jubilant fans. A crowd of fans, most of them young, broke through Gate 3 on the southwest side of Me yards.

Florida, finished the season 12-1, started out strong with a field goal putting Nebraska behind for only the second time this season and a touchdown in the first quarter. But Nebraska rallied with a 42-yard touchdown run by Phillips, a 1-yard dive by Ahman Green and a pair of field goals by freshman kicker Kris Brown. The Nebraska defense, which limited Florida to a net of 1 yard total offense in the second quarter, tried to keep pace with the Husker offense. Jamel Williams sacked Florida quarterback Wuerffel for a safety, and Michael Booker intercepted a pass, returning it 42 yards for a touchdown with 2:40 left in the first morial Stadium at 12:10 a.m. and poured onto the snow-laden turf.

Police said between 200 and 700 people made their way onto the field. As elsewhere, the crowd was rowdy but not unruly. During that postgame celebration in the heart of the downtown, banners of all descriptions were seen from the sophisticated to the crude. One of the crude variety was large and makeshift, fashioned with lipstick and bearing this testimony to Tommie Frazier: "Eddie Who? Tommie Heisman! Also seen among the hundreds of cars cruising the area near and 13th streets was one driven by Don Struble of Lincoln, a salesman for IMS whose seatmate was a huge inflatable Herbie Husker whose head and shoulders were popping up through Struble's sun roof. In Omaha, an estimated 10.000 fans converged on 72nd and Dodge streets during the final minutes of the game, police said.

Traffic was backed up for more than 40 blocks to the west, while officers sealed off the intersection. Police broke up at least one fight here in Lincoln when a fan tried to take away another fan's white and red Nebraska flag. The party continued past 1 a.m. and was expected to continue for another hour or so. "This is absolutely great.

This is the reason I came to college in Lincoln," said UNL student Brian Potter. "Right here. This is a moment I'll never forget." winnrnrznRR Continued from Page 1A Minutes earlier. Frazier had scored on a 35-yard quarterback draw in which he simply blew through the line and outraced the defenders to the end zone. In the first half.

Frazier and Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne seemed to be challenging Florida Coach Steve Spurrier's reputation as an offensive genius. On one play in the second quarter. Frazier. who finished 33-3 as a starter over four years, lined up as a fullback, in a three-point stance. As he came to the center, the Huskers split out five receivers for the first time this year maybe ever and Frazier took off on a 32-yard run to set up a touchdown.

Defensively, the Huskers were just as brilliant. They picked up three interceptions, a fumble recovery and a safety, while hammering the Florida offense and nailing the Gators' passing game. "They were better in every phase and we weren't good enough." Florida's Spurrier said. "We just got clobbered, and I'm embarrassed." Spurrier said Nebraska's offense was unstoppable, and the Husker defense was too much. "It didn't seem to matter who carried the ball, they got the yards, they got the touchdowns," he said.

"It didn't matter if we changed things up on offense because they were too strong for what we were trying to do." The Nebraska offense sprang to life with a string of runs by Frazier and I-back Lawrence Phillips. Phillips finished with three touchdowns and 165 yards, while Frazier scored two touchdowns and ran for 199 yards. He also threw for 105 yards and a touchdown. The performances marked the first time in 34 bowl games that Nebraska had at least two 100-yard gainers, and the first time since the 1985 Sugar Bowl that Nebraska had even one player gain 100 yards rushing. The Huskers seemed to be able to pick the score after a rampage in the second quarter.

The Huskers counted for three touchdowns, two field goals and a safetv to take a 35-10 lead at the half. Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel was held to a season-worst performance of 17 completions, three interceptions and one touchdown pass. His passing total was 255 rn JY 1 1 sstirj SttBH JHlratri "Rv" iyjKjf Except Des Moines Downtown Open 10 a.m. p.m. Free Dessert During January, purchase a regular-priced dinner entree at Spaghetti Works and dessert is FREE!
