Tom i03i-' Johnson RSJ' heavy metal. Then there's the plethora of spoken word programming available reaching and Bible teaching, news, talk, interview and call-in shows, all of which are trying to deliver a compelling, faith-oriented message with a unique voice. to understand about Christian radio broadcasting is that it is not a homogeneous monolith. The range of music available for play on Christian radio stations is extremely broad everything from sedate choral works and organ music to rap and "When are you going to write something about Christian radio?" a reader asked me.

A fair question. I really haven't addressed the religious end of the broadcasting business at all. So let's take a look. The first thing Monday prime-time television rent growth mode, now support its own Christian station? Some people think so. In''199z, Bott Broadcasting a Christian radio group based in Overland -Park, Kan.

acquired KUHG-FM 98.1. a station licensed to Milford. Bott still holds the license but hasn't nailed down a target date to put KUHG on the air. Other people want something to happen now. When I wrote about the potential for Lincoln's inactive KHAT-AM 1530.

I got a call Richard Swain, a local insurance ex-ecutive. As a Californian. Swain was a loyal listener to the K-Love Radio Network, a 24-hour Christian music format based in Sacramento. Since moving to Lincoln he has, purely on his own initiative, been scouting the area for an inactive ot unbuilt station that might serve as a low-cost, listener-supported satellite for K-Love. While KHAT's future is a question mark, it surely piqued Swain's interest.

So there are possibilities. But as the experience of KBHL illustrates, the marketplace still will determine success or failure, even for broadcasters with religious motivations. Within its own universe. Christian broadcasting is just as competitive as secular radio, and there's real money changing hands. Christian radio stations sell blocks of time to an increasing number of local and national media ministries.

A bidding war for air time has commenced in key markets, freezing out some smaller players. The reason: both the ministries and the stations need listeners and money to survive, just as in secular radio. Lincoln doesn't have a Christian radio station to call its own. The most notable attempt was back in the 1970s with KBHL-FM. whose call letters stood for a religious sentiment: "Kept By His Love." The station bravely chose to go the commercial route, selling spots as well as block time to support its eclectic musicprogram format.

But. eventually, when KBHL ran out of gas, the station was sold and went country. I heard somebody joke that KBHL then stood for "Keep Buyin' Hog Livers." Today, Lincoln listeners have three Christian broadcasting alternatives. First is Omaha's KGBI-FM 100.7. Owned and operated on a nonprofit basis by Grace University, the station character is conservative and evangelical.

It targets the 25-54 demographic but is probably hitting the high end of that. It's heavy with spoken-word programs, and its music is contemporary but low-risk. Then there's KCRO-AM 660, a commercial station whose demo skews younger, with a music playlist that's more pop-oriented and cutting edge. But AM reception in Lincoln is often poor. Finally, there's KJSK-AM 900 in Columbus.

KJSK long had a truly unique format of religious programs and polka music. Recently it has eased off the polkas and emphasized newstalk, along with 20 hours of religious programming weekly. Again. AM reception in Lincoln isn't the greatest. Of these three, KGBI has had the most success in drawing Lincoln listeners, with up to 20 percent of its audience tuning in from Lancaster County.
