The laboratory of another company had developed processes whereby solder made of silver, antimony, and lead could be used in place of tin-lead solder. 1 A subcommittee on rubber tapping the combined lore of a number of laboratories, found uses for clt, fabrics, leather and fibers as replacement for rubber in bumpers, anti-squeak pads, gaskets and seals.

Floor plates with non-skid env bossed design were recommended to save rubber formerly used in mats. For harder rubbers used on steering wheels, cellulose acetate plastics were offered. For rubber used in hose and tubing, the substitute offered was extruded viny-liden chloride a plastic unknown before 1939 and a laboratory curiosity until recently. (UP) The Russian Academy of Sciences has elected three Americans and two Englishmen to honorary memberships, the first foreigners to be so honored since the revolution, It was announced Saturday. The Americans are: Walter Cannon, Harvard physiologist, and Gilbert N. Lewis, chemist, and Ernest O. Lawrence, physicist, both of the University of California and inventors of the electron to smash atoms. Witness the fact that closely guarded secrets of six months ago today are freely tossed across the table for the good of the nation Materials developed by automotive engineers in peacetime and then shelved for one reason or another are finding use in wartime channels. Sometimes the results of laboratory work have been amazing. One company, through previous experimental work, has saved pounds of nickel on its contract for a small combat vehicle. In another instance, the manufacturer of an aircraft cannon, through a laboratory recommendation, has saved to date 420,000 pounds of nickel and 257,000 pounds of chromium on one part alone. On another part, a change from copper-tin to copper-silicon castings is saving 20 pounds of tin per gun.

The engineers are finding out that substitutes, free of such alloying metals as nickel, chromium, tungsten and manganese; not only are practical today, but are necessary. To meet the approval of military officials, any alternate must be' as good as the mtaerial replaced. In many cases they have been found to be superior. At a recent meeting of engineers hundreds of ideas were pooled to supply the best alternates for scarce materials specified for military vehicles. Hooper, Inc, leading radio survey organization, shows that in Greater Miami Kaltenborn is far and away the favorite news commentator heard during the week on any station. Considered the dean of American news analysts, Kaltenborn is a veteran newspaper and radio man. Not content with analyzing the news dispatches he receives from the press associations, Kaltenborn frequently obtains first-hand information by visiting the places and people in the news.

His newspaper experience haa taken him to most of the important news centers of the world and he has personally talked with leaders on both sides of the present world conflict.
