Lincoln Journal Star Sunday. September 17, 1995 5B Page design: Julie Koch HUSKERSBIG EIGHT Opening score brings Treu joy i v- respond strong Continued from Page 1B Frazier to Johnson. BY STEVE SIPPLE -Lincoln Journal Star All of those touchdowns before spotlight Plus, Treu was simply enjoying being part of a collegiate football powerhouse that happens to be located in his hometown. "Just growing up in Lincoln and seeing all this (at Memori V. Is i TREU so excited al Stadium), and then finally being a part of it it's didnt figure I'd be rotating like this, but after I found out that's what I'd be doing this season the night before the Oklahoma State (on Aug.

31), I was ecstatic," Treu said. "I was really jacked up." His positive feelings were even more pronounced Saturday when Childs broke free on the first play. "It was an outside zone play to the left, where the left tackle works with the tight end (on their blocks)," Treu said. "I don't know what happened, but they just sealed it off outside." Nebraska's opening touchdown sparked a first half in which the Huskers scored a school-record 63 points and rolled up 508 yards of offense. They scored on nine of their first 10 possessions.

Nebraska made it look easy, but that wasn't necessarily the case, Treu said. "Seriously, they were a pretty good team," Treu said of the 1-2 Sun Devils. "They were a lot better than Oklahoma State. Their linebackers flew around the field quite a bit We had to make sure we used the right techniques and got our assignments right. I'm sure there were some missed blocks in there well find out more Monday (when the players view game films)." Ik Adam Treu said his emotions ran "jhigh.

"Honestly, tears came to my eyes because I was so excited," said Treu, j-eferring to Nebraska I-back Clin-. ton Childs' 65-yard touchdown run on the Huskers' first play from scrimmage Saturday in their 77-28 win against Arizona State. Treu, a junior offensive tackle from Lincoln Pius was on the sidelines during Childs' big run, jumping and yelling excitedly. "I really didn't expect anything like that to happen so soon in this game because all week we had heard that (Arizona State) was going to be one of the tougher teams we'll face all year at home," Treu said. "We prepared like they would be, and then to see that Treu's emotions were the result of seeing how his teammates responded to the difficult week Nebraska's football program had endured.

Last weekend, two Husker I-backs Lawrence Phillips and Damon Benning were arrested for assault their former girlfriends, and as a result, the Husker program was placed in the national Nebraska was forced to punt And even then, the punt was a spectacular 74-yarder by Jesse Kosch, which was downed on the 2 after a diving save by Jared Tomich. While Arizona State (1-2) seemed to wander in a daze on defense and proved pesky with a string of long scoring passes and three touchdowns in the first half, Nebraska tacked on two more touchdowns one a direct snap to Green that he turned into a 26-yard score. He was slowed only by the umpire in the ASU backfield. For toppers, Nebraska drove 41 yards in the final 1:37 of the first half, when Frazier hit Reggie Baul on a 36-yard pass, and then scored on another option keeper. "They're the best team I've ever played in my whole like," said Arizona State receiver Keith Poole, who caught six passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

"They're awesome. That offense is amazing. They're unstoppable, basically." Arizona State Coach Bruce Snyder, who was angered because of Nebraska's last touchdown with 38 seconds left in the game, was complimentary as well. 1 great," Treu said. Treu is playing a significant role for Nebraska after three years of mostly watching.

During the first three games this season, Treu has seen ample playing time in a three-man rotation with fellow offensive tackles Eric Anderson and Chris Dishman. Treu sits out the first two series, goes in for Anderson at right tackle for a series, then spells Dish-man on the left side. The tackles continually rotate throughout the game. Last season, Treu played in five games at right tackle after playing in two games as a redshirt freshman in 1993. Green added, "All you have to do is get to the hole and run. It seemed to work every time. I can't find any plays that didn't work. The line just blew them off, as usual.

Coaches always tell us, you practice as you play. This went like practice." The first half showed that practice almost made perfect. Nebraska had 304 yards and a record-tying 35 points in the first quarter, another 28 points in the second quarter and a whopping total of 508 yards in the first half. "I don't ever remember a team doing that before," said Osborne, who quickly apologized for Nebraska's final touchdown. Osborne's only other concern was the Husker defense for giving up three long passes for scores and questions about a lackluster second half.

"We didn't play with the same intensity throughout the game, but that's understandable," he said. Still, Nebraska powered its way to 686 yards of offense lOth-best all-time and showed more than recovery from a week where the players avoided the press and the head coach braced for a hurricane of criticism. "It was nice to have a game," said Osborne, who had six press conferences this week, addressing the charges against three of his players. "I imagine this week will be tough A lot of folks are here to do a job. The thing I feel bad about is that it's OK to rip me.

That's what I get paid for. I just hate to see the players take some of the stuff they've had to take." Frazier said criticism of Osborne and the Nebraska program was a point of focus for the Huskers. "We're on top and everyone wants a shot at us," he said. "We don't worry about the media or the way we're casted by them. The backs Clinton Childs, Ahman Green and James Sims took the burden of filling in for Lawrence (Phillips) and Damon (Benning) and the team did the rest.

"We kept our focus and everything we did worked. That's the way to overcome adversity." The Huskers showed no signs that controversy was slowing them down, as they scored in less than two minutes on eight different first-half drives. "The first play set the tone and the rest seemed kind of natural," said Anderson. "We got on the field, snapped the ball and nothing else mattered for the afternoon. This is a group with great focus.

We got an opportunity to play and we used it to our best advantage." SECOND QUARTER 14-35 Pool 80 pass from Plummer Drive: 80 yards in three plays. Oklahoma was sloppy on offense for the second straight week, but got two second-half touchdowns from tailback James Allen to beat Southern Methodist 24-10 Saturday at Norman, Okla. Oklahoma committed 14 penalties, most of those by the offense, one week after being penalized 15 times against San Diego State. Holding and delay of game were the most common infractions Saturday. "I'm embarrassed by the play of our offensive football team," Coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "I take the blame for a disjointed, erratic, noncomplete football team." Schnellenberger said he felt like "a traffic cop" on the sidelines as he tried to help his offense manage the clock and pick up blitzes.

At one point the crowd counted down with the 25-second clock as the Sooners tried successfully, as it turned out to get a punt off in time. "It's gotten to be total confusion, and we've got to get that corrected or we'll never beat Tom Thumb or North Texas or Colorado," Schnellenberger said. The Mustangs kept things interesting until the closing minutes. They failed to convert on fourth-and-1 at the Oklahoma 30 with the score 24-10 midway through the fourth quarter, then drove to the 36 on their next possession before turning it over on downs. Colorado 66, NE Louisiana 14 Koy Detmer passed for a school-record 426 yards and four touchdowns as the ninth-ranked Buffaloes cruised at Boulder, Colo.

Detmer, who broke his own record of 418 yards set against Oklahoma in 1992, played less than a minute into the third quarter. He had 352 yards and three touchdowns at half-time and Colorado had a 49-7 lead. But Coach Rick Neuheisel left him in the game when the second half be- gan because the record was in sight. Iowa 27, Iowa St. 1 0 Iowa overcame some disorganization on offense to continue its domF-nation of Iowa State, career-high 178 yards rushing from Sedrick Shaw in a victory at Ames; Iowa.

Shaw, Tavian Banks, Rodney Filet and quarterback Matt Sherman each scored on short touchdown runs as Iowa (2-0) beat the Cyclones (1-2) for the 13th straight time. ,4 It was Iowa State's first game in the series under Coach Dan McCartney, who played at Iowa and later coached there for 13 years. Oklahoma State 35, SW Missouri State 7 Oklahoma State won for the first time in 10 games as David Thompson and Andre Richardson each rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown at Stillwater, Okla. In giving Bob Simmons his first victory as a head coach, the CowJ boys (1-2) overcame two turnovers in the third quarter and finally put the game out of reach on Thompson's 23-yard touchdown run that made it 28-7 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Texas Tech 41, Missouri 14" Byron Hanspard rushed for twd touchdowns and 117 yards as Texas Tech managed to avoid fan-inflicted tortilla penalties at Lubbock, Texas.

Red Raider defenders had fbuf sacks and limited the Tigers' rushing game to 71 yards on 40 carries. Zach Thomas' 20 tackles, a career high, led the effort. Tech drew a warning but no penalty when someone in the crowd of 36,242 threw a tortilla that landed 3 inches in front of a line sman. Another tortilla on the field would have cost the Red Raiders 19 yards. Tortilla tossing became a focus last week when Tech athletic offi't cials said referees would penalize the home team if fans indulged in that peculiar example of team spiri it 12:07 00:38 Arizona State Coach Bruce Snyder had an animated discussion with Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne at midfield after the game about Nebraska's final touchdown, a 39-yard pass from Matt Turman to Lance Brown, and Snyder later discussed it with reporters.

"I think it's important to put it in perspective," Snyder said. "The game was out of hand it was clearly decided at that point. I know you put young people in I don't know how old that quarterback is, but he's the third stringer. You can't tell him not to compete. And the wide receiver, you can't tell him to drop the ball.

"I understand that. I've been in some games where I've been on the other side and you don't want to run it up." Snyder spoke about two possible scenarios for the play, "I don't know what's going on on their sideline and within their program," he said. "But if they feel like they've got to run it up to match what Penn State did today and what Florida State did today and what other schools did today, I'm saddened for college football. I'm really saddened. If that's the reason.

If it was another reason, which was I've got players out there and they're competing', that's a different deal. I can't make that judgment. They have to live with that. I told him that I thought it was not right and I didn't appreciate it." Osborne said he was sorry about the play. "I apologized to Bruce it was a bush-league thing to do," Osborne said.

"I feel bad about that. We should have just run a draw play. We called a hook pattern, just trying to get 12, 14 yards, get a first down and get more people in. I feel troubled by the last play. We never try to do that." Arizona State linebacker Justin Dragoo had no problem with the play.

"I never get offended," he said. going for the national championship again and they want the No. 1 ranking in the country. They probably figure if Florida Sate is going to score 70, they better score 70. If you have the weapons to score that many points, shoot, bring it on.

If you have a good defense, you should be able to stop them." How busy was the first half for the statistics keepers? "Our hew computer system for keeping stats locked up for a minute because the memory was full in the first half," Chris Anderson, Nebraska's eports information director. She later clarified that it wasn't because of too many stats. On scoring 77 points, including a late touchdown Osborne said it wasn't for ratings. That's I felt bad about the end of the game. We never try to do that.

What another coach does doesn't matter. But I'd like to see computer ratings to take some of the subjectivity out of the voting. I don't vote on score margins." Tommie Frazier, when asked if this team is as good as last year's "We're putting up some big numbers. But you can't evaluate that kind of thing until late in the year." Placekicker Ted Retzlaff got his first action as a Husker with four extra point kicks and a couple of kickoffs. Retzlaff, who had his knee rebuilt after tearing a anterior cruciate ligament, said his knee feels stable, and that he is working to regain the muscle strength he had before his injury.

Jared Tomich didnt alibi for the defense it allowed 461 yards, the most in Nebraska's last 21 games. "We were getting a little lazy here and there. When the offense gets ahead like that, that has nothing to do with us. We still have to do our job. When they score like that, that never looks good.

They scored way too much. I think." Clinton Childs, on the possibility of recovering from a strained knee In time for Saturday's game against Pacific "I'm pretty sure you'll see me next week, but it depends on how hard I work during the course of the week to get my knee back together. We've had a few players who have had the same injury that have been back in two or three days. I'm a pretty hard worker, so I'D be back."
