Uncdfi Journal Star 4Q Monday, November 6, 1995 ENTERTAINMENT It's beginning to look a lot like remodeling in the media business Tom Johnson Citadel Communications continues its work to get Channel 8, Lincoln's new ABC-TV affiliate, on the air. It's been tough sledding, however, mainly due to the fact that Citadel quite admirably wants to renovate an existing structure for bardo had hoped to make an announcement about the studio site last week, but engineering snags and Lombardo's desire to get things right the first time prevented it What this does to Citadel's original Jaa 1 launch date for 8 is its studios instead of building new. The two properties the company is evaluating both have advantages and disadvantages, but the biggest questions pertain to the easy reception of network satellite signals. Citadel President Philip J. Lom- Monday prime-time TV the sale of the stations to an outfit obliquely named Lincoln Radio Acquisition, but that's more or less a formality.

Pam Clark, who became general manager of the stations after Doug Agnew left the scene in July, says the deal was quick, with a full-price offer tendered shortly after the three stations went on the block in September. Clark was not surprised. "They're profitable radio stations' with room left to grow," she said. No word yet on any potential format changes, but Clark did say the new owners visited the station last week and assured everyone that no personnel cuts were in store. "These people are broadcasters, not just investors," she said.

"Wheirthey buy! a broadcast property, they want it to; do the best it possibly can for the-community." The outstanding question is what will happen to KHAT. The AM has. been dark for three years, with Rock Steady reapplying to the FCC to' keep the license alive until the sta- tion could be developed. If the new owners allow the license to revert back to the FCC, another enterpris- ing broadcaster could snatch it upv perhaps trying out a whole new for-f mat.1-- anybody's guess, but one can assume that the situation won't move the date any closer. Incidentally, the new call letters for Channel 8 will be KLKN.

The satellite station near Elgin will be called KLKE. Speaking of renovations, Jim Rose, program director at KLIN-AM 1400. tells me that the overhaul of Broadcast House at 44th and 0 streets is almost complete, with a gala open house slated for the first of the year. The building, nicknamed "The Radio Mall" because it also houses the studios of KEZG-FM 107.3") and KFGE-FM underwent an exterior restoration three years ago. But the interior redo was much more ambitious and even more sorely needed.

"This building was built for lVs radio stations," says Rose. When Broadcast House was erected in the 70s. KLIN-FM (now KEZG) was strictly automated, broadcasting from the equivalent of a coat closet. When KEZG was upgraded to better space, KFGE inherited the closet. With the renovation, both FMs will have plenty of room for equipment and personnel.

The biggest beneficiary, though. will be KLIN's control room. It's been redesigned as a sit-down studio with new equipment and a better physical arrangement for broadcasters to interact with co-hosts, guests and news personnel. Will all of this improve the quality of the product that goes out over the air? Undoubtedly. People in any business feel more comfortable and do a better job when the work environment is fresh, sharp and suited to the task.

And while we're on the subject of radio.
