SFOKIS sta KEG fco llcsiinip 3C Lincoln Journal Star Sunday, November 5, 1995 Gordon Winters v. Cydoniies NU BY KEN HAMBLETON Lincoln Journal Star MOW -Vv i TED KIRKLmai Journal Star Hurry, hurry, step right up and see the eighth wonder of the world. Watch the Nebraska football team justify its new No. 1 ranking with a tantalizing, yet workmanlike 73-14 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska's football circus presented the stupendous Tommie Fra-zier and the high-flying Cornhusker offense, the monstrous Nebraska defense, as well as spectacular feats by dozens of other players while entertaining 75,505 fans and the Iowa State -football team.

In the center ring, the colossal Nebraska offensive line displayed its power for 89 plays that produced a dazzling total of 10 touchdowns, 776 yards of total offense (fifth-best all-time) and 624 yards rushing (second-best all-time) by 15 different fleet-footed ball carriers. Master of ceremonies, senior quarterback Frazier, battled a sore leg all week. He still made Cyclone defenders and Heisman Trophy pretenders seemingly disappear. He rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 118 yards and two more touchdowns in playing just over one half of the game. The young, the talented, the flashy freshman I-back Ahman Green startled the audience with his 176 yards rushing and four touchdowns to become NU's all-time leading freshman running back.

For suspense, Iowa State back Troy Davis, the nation's leading rusher at 190.7 yards per game, managed 121 yards against a Nebraska defense that intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble and a kickoff, and three times threw ISU backs for losses. For drama, Nebraska fans, facing criticism from CBS News, warmly welcomed back I-back Lawrence Phillips, who returned from a six-game suspension for assaulting his ex-girlfriend on Sept. 10. And the immediate reviews were positive. "I've been in college football for 25 years and that's as fine a team as I've ever coached against," said Iowa State Coach Dan McCarney.

"And I've coached against No. 1 teams before. "They're a totally, totally dominant football team, just outstanding in every way. Not only do they have great talent and outstanding players, but they also do a great job of coaching. Once the score got away from us, it was the men and the boys." Nebraska l-back Ahman Green pulls away from Iowa State's Kevin Fleecs after getting a block from teammate Adam Treu (77) on a 26-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter Saturday.

Maintain that mental focus. Game day. What happens? Not one single punt, that's what. Series after series, Kosch follows this routine. If it is second down-and- long he warms up by kicking a few into the net.

If it is third-and-long, he gets close to Coach Tom Osborne. But Saturday, the call to go into the game never came. ,1 had a lot of time to study the cloud patterns," Kosch said with a smile. Which only goes to show he was keeping his head in the game. Weather, after all, is important to a punter.

"The less I'm out there the better," Kosch pointed out. But he, like the fan in the stands, has been required to become a connoisseur of the blowout this season. When the game is not on the line, one is forced to take interest in the obscure. Shoveling touchdowns Which leads to study of the shovel pass, which this season should be enshrined in a special place in the pantheon of Husker plays, somewhere below the bumerooski, but well above the off-tackle plunge. Again on Saturday, the shovel play went for a touchdown to I-back Ahman Green.

How about that shovel pass, Ahman? "AH I know it's always either for a touchdown or a long play," Green said. Quarterback Tommie Fraizer said he thinks the shovel pass is easier to execute than a pitch. "You only have to read one person" on the shovel play, he said. quarterback is credited for a pass completion on the play, but on the pitch the running back gets the credit. Which is another example of how life isn't fair and why the only number that really counts is the score.

Heisman voters should remember that. When it comes to wins, Fraizer is 30-3 as a starter at Nebraska. Saturday, once again, he was a master. With him at the field, the run-option offense seems to offer a bewildering profusion of weapons, of which the shovel pass is only one. I like the shovel pass, though.

It suits a farm state like Nebraska. You use a shovel to move corn. Speaking of shoveling stuff, how about that Bernard Goldberg. Blew into Lincoln to ask the tough question, right? The tough question the local media wouldn't answer, right? Wrong. Been asked and answered in a variety of fashions.

Always Osborne maintained he would have handled the situation in the same fashion if the victim had been a member of his family. Staging theater No. Goldberg flew into Lincoln not to, uncover new information. He arrived with one mission: to stage a bit of theater one camera on him and one camera on Osborne that would provide a tension-filled intro to his opinion piece on college football, in particular successful college football. Speaking of successful, can it get any more routine than 73-14? Osborne characterized the game as one that was "played with good consistency and effort, but was not "inspired." He dodged questions on whether this is his best team ever, but once again remarked on the special chemistry the team has exhibited so far this year.

"We hang together pretty well," he said. "We have a lot of good athletes here. It would be easy to be envious. But we spread the ball around and are relatively unselfish." You can only wonder what will happen next Saturday at Lawrence, if the Buskers are inspired. Realistically, the Jayhawks offer the regular season's last best chance for a close game, which is my wish as a spectator.

But if it isn't close, there are always the refined pursuits of a connoisseur of the Husker blowout Cinderella Northwestern survives sternest test yet VANSTON, 111. AP) Forget the past Coach Joe Paterno. once and for all. Northwestern Wildcats are no longer just the biggest surprise in college football this season. They're now one of the top teams.

"They don't have, a lot of glamour athletes, except for Autry. They remind me a lot of the teams' I used to have. They are my kind of football team. They play football the way I like to see kids do it," he added. "Nothing fancy.

They don't' win big. They-just Northwestern (8-1, 6-0 Big Ten) equaled the victory total of its 1948 team that went on to capture the Rose Bowl in the school's only postseason appearance. Thousands of purple-clad fans mobbed the field after the Wildcats' seventh straight victory on a frigid 30-degree day at soldout Dyche Stadium. "We tried to start a new season in November. Champions are crowned in November," Northwestern Coach Gary Barnett "We have self-respect and that's all that counts for us.

We're a pretty good team." Penn State, trailing 14-7 at the half, controlled the third quarter, getting a break-when punter Darrell Kania's kick grazed Northwestern's Matt Stewart, who was running downfield, with the Nittany Lions' Chuck Penzenik recovering at the Wildcats' 22. Penn State moved to a first down at the 11 and advanced to the 7 before settling for Brett Conway's 24-yard field goal that made it 14-10. "We get to read, Who are these guys, these lowly hooligans who are beating all these good teams they aren't supposed said Pat Fitzgerald, who had 20 tackles Saturday as the sixth-ranked Wildcats beat No. 12 Penn State 21-10. "We have no control over what Northwestern did in the past." But they have taken control of this season and the near future.

The victory Saturday will probably land the Wildcats, the Big Ten leaders, in a New Year's Day bowl game as a reward for their improbable success. First it was Notre Dame on the first weekend of September. Then it was Michigan on the first weekend of October. And on the first Saturday of November, the Wildcats beat yet another team with a pedigree. They used the running of Darnell Autry, who gained 100-plus yards for a 10th straight game to go with three touchdowns, and a defense that allowed only three second-half points, even though the Nittany Lions were twice inside the Wildcats' 10-yard line.

"This is the best defensive team we have played against this year," said Penn State Bowe knocks out Holyfield! LAS VEGAS (AP) Evander Ho-' lyfield predicted a knockout. It was'. Riddick Bowe who got one Saturday; night. i Bowe struggled up from a smash-t ing knockdown early in the sixth round and won when he knocked Ho-, lyfield down twice in the eighth round. Referee Joe Cortez halted the' fight with Holyfield on his knees near the ropes and his cornermen, coming through the ropes to his res cue.

Holyfield was one point ahead on, all three officials' cards after seven rounds. Early in the eighth round, they, went at it toe to toe and then Holy field went face down from a tremens dous right to the head. The 32-year-old Holyfield struggled up at 9 and appeared out on his feet. Cortez took a long look at Holy-field and then motioned for action to resume. Then Bowe ended it with two rights to the head that dropped Holyfield to his knees.

Cortez immediately signaled the action was over at 58 seconds of the round. Early in the sixth round it appeared Holyfield might fulfill his prediction. At 23 seconds of the round, Holy-field landed a tremendous left hook followed by a right that put the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Bowe down for the first time in 39 professional fights. Bowe struggled up at about 5 and obviously was in real trouble. As Bowe staggered across the ring to a neutral corner, Holyfield pursued.

him and landed two or three more punches to the head. Then, almost unbelievably, Holy-, field backed off while Bowe shot out a few tentative Jabs. Finally, Bowe came out of the corner and out-jabbed Holyfield for the rest of the round. i 3 If; i ASSOCIATED PRESS A Northwestern running back Darnell Autry goes airborne on a run Saturday at Evanston, III.
